Leading Disability Advocate Christopher Soukup Set to Deliver 'Being Human' Solo Presentation at SXSW 2019

Leading disability advocate Christopher Soukup is set to deliver a solo speaker presentation at SXSW 2019. Mr. Soukup is CEO of Communication Service for the Deaf(CSD), the world's largest Deaf-led social impact organization. He will present March 13 in Austin, TX, on Being Human: The Future of Innovation and Success.

South by Southwest is one of the most diverse, collaborative and inventive conferences in the world. Mr. Soukup joins numerous and notable speakers at this year's conference, including NASA scientists, entertainment icons and leading voices: Stacey Abrams, T Bone Burnett, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ethan Hawke, Elizabeth Moss, Nile Rodgers, Howard Schultz, Maria Shriver, Brian Solis, Kara Swisher, Nicholas Thompson, and Olivia Wilde.

Soukup is one of the world's leading human rights and disability advocates. He has been featured extensively in numerous national media outlets as a leading voice on key issues impacting the Deaf and disability communities. According to Mr. Soukup, ongoing societal biases and misperceptions about who Deaf and disabled people are and what they are capable of achieving remain by far the most critical issues.

"I am very honored to have been selected to present at SXSW 2019," said Mr. Soukup. "Societal biases that prevent uplift must be shed. Diversity and inclusion efforts are barely touching the surface and we must go beyond. We must recognize that humanity needs diversity and it is critical that the notion of diversity incorporate Deaf, neurodiverse and disabled variations of people along with other intersectional identities. I can think of no better place than SXSW to challenge these and many other critically important issues."

Mr. Soukup's Being Human: The Future of Innovation and Success will explore an expansion of what it means to be human today and in the future. More specifically, Soukup will take a close look at societal "norms" and biases, including: what is a disability and who gets to define it; why "normal" is a limited and limiting force; and what roles do universal design and technology ethics play in our future workplace. His presentation will be delivered in American Sign Language and English on March 13 at 2:00 p.m. CST in Salon FG at the JW Marriott in Austin. This presentation is open to all SXSW Interactive, Music, Film and Platinum badge-holders.
