Award-Winning Pastelist Linda Gross Brown Closes Year Out With Honors and Exhibitions

In the short time since fall has begun Linda Gross Brown has won multiple honors for her work and has been accepted into various upcoming exhibitions. "Footsteps #7" was awarded the Chicago Pastel Painters' Award of Excellence at the 2018 Chicago Pastel Painters' Exhibition, "Treehaven #1" got an Honorable Mention at the Rejoice in Art! Juried Exhibition, and "Footsteps #16" got an Honorable mention in the Pastel Guild of Europe's Open Online Competition. "Footsteps #14" was accepted into both the 90th Grand National Exhibition of the American Artists Professional League and the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club's 122nd Annual Open Exhibition. Looking back on the year, "Sunset, Gulf of Mexico #2" was shown at the 2018 Great Lakes Pastel Society National Exhibition and "Footsteps #12" was shown at the 2018 Academy Center for the Arts Annual National Juried Exhibition. "Footsteps #16" won the Light/Shadow Award at the American Artists Profesional League's Annual Exhibition.

Later on in the year, "Footsteps #16" was shown at the American Artists Professional League's 2018 Celebrating the Spirit of America Show, while "Treehaven #1", "Snowtracks #1", and "Footsteps #5" were shown at Pastel en Périgord's 2018 International Pastel Show in France.

Continuing the "Footesteps" series successes, "Footsteps #12" won the Cheap Joe's Art Stuff Award at the Hudson Valey Art Association's Annual Exhibition, "Footsteps #16" was shown at the Allied Artists of America's 2018 Annual Exhibition where it won the Diane B. Berhard Silver Medal Award in Pastel and was also shown at the Degas Pastel Society's 17th Biennial National Exhibition, "Footsteps #15" was a finalist in the Artist's Magazine's 35th Annual Competition, and "Footsteps #7" along with "Footsteps #10" were accepted into the Chicago Pastel painters Seventh Biennial Member Juried Exhibition.

Additionally, "Treehaven #1" and "Tracks in the Sand" were shown at the Rejoice in Art! Juried Exhibition.

EXHIBITOR Magazine Releases Research on Marketing-Related Technology

EXHIBITOR magazine, the award-winning leader in trade show and corporate event marketing education, has released the results of its 2018 Marketing Technology Survey, which queried exhibit and event professionals from nearly 200 companies on their experiences with and opinions of marketing-related technologies employed on the trade show floor and as part of their organizations' corporate events.

According to this year's survey results, 96 percent of respondents currently use technology to enhance their marketing efforts in some way, with 84 percent employing various technologies inside their trade show exhibits and 54 percent incorporating technology into their companies' corporate events. Compared to 2016, that marks a 5 percent increase in the number of companies using technology to enhance their exhibits; whereas, event usage has only increased 3 percentage points in the past two years.

Not surprisingly, the most notable increases in exhibit- and event-related technology usage since 2016 were seen in mobile apps, smartphones, geofencing, and virtual reality — each of which experienced growth rates of 50 percent or more. Growth also was reported for microsites, tablet PCs, touchscreens, augmented reality, digital signage, and streaming video. Meanwhile, Quick Response (QR) codes, projection, and virtual events have plateaued, with usage statistically unchanged since 2016.

"Survey results signal that RFID and audience response systems are poised for significant growth," said EXHIBITOR magazine's editor Travis Stanton. "Several respondents report actively considering incorporating those technologies into their 2019 exhibits and events."

Respondents who have used various technologies in the context of their exhibit- and event-marketing efforts indicate that those technologies have led to increases in booth traffic, brand awareness, and sales leads, as well as improved relationships with clients and enhanced staffer/attendee interactions at trade shows and events. And while fewer than a quarter of exhibit managers who have used technology to enhance their trade show exhibits proactively set measurable goals to gauge the effectiveness of those applications, the vast majority (72 percent) report that the technologies they used met or exceeded initial objectives.

"It's worth noting that a drop in tech usage occurred between 2014 and 2016, and today's metrics have essentially rebounded to the adoption and application rates measured in 2014," said Stanton. "The data also imply companies that are incorporating marketing-related technologies are dipping their toes deeper into the techno tidal pool than they were in the past, adopting and incorporating multiple technologies, as opposed to one or two applications at a time as the data indicate they were doing back in 2010."

Within every issue, readers will find practical information such suggested activities, an island map, the best flight routes, and a note about WIMCO's concierge services, all written with a nod to the discerning traveler. Illustrator Ashley Begley provided whimsical island depictions and St. Barths motifs, while heralded Italian artist Emiliano Ponzi sketched the afterword of the magazine, a visual rumination on the difference a year makes.

Collaborative VR Experience that Generates Leads at Trade Show Innovated by Design Center

Design Center recently designed and developed a collaborative VR (virtual reality) project for a major institutional cleaning products company, designed to draw booth visitors and generate leads at an international event for the world's largest cleaning-related organizations.
This was the second VR project for this long-term client. This time, the goal was to attract attention and deliver quality leads.
"We were looking for an exciting way to drive traffic to our booth and create engagement; keep it low-key, interactive and still imprint our message," the client said. "The VR experience needed to educate players about our products in an engaging way and be more than just a fun game."
Design Center President Ken Haus said, "This was a challenge, but we don't shy away from challenges. We simply don't have a shortage of in-house skills. This makes Design Center nimble, and proactive."
Design Center had already been internally innovating and testing a collaborative VR experience that had the potential to revolutionize VR—essentially enabling the person with the headset to be aided by an assistant with a tablet. This project was Design Center's second collaborative project for a client.
By combining users in a virtual space with users on mobile devices, Design Center's collaborative VR innovation creates an integrated experience that is more inclusive than traditional VR. The connected approach allows for real-time collaboration through shared goals, complimentary skills and tandem exercises that are more engaging and more impactful.
"Not everyone is going to want to put on a headset," Haus said. "By creating a collaborative experience, we can get around that."
To fully leverage the VR project, Design Center created a leader board that not only kept track of scores, but allowed the client to gather leads at the event.
"People liked the competitive aspect," Haus said. "They would come back multiple times because it was a fun experience that people wanted to play. It created the pull the client was looking for. Players walked away with a better understanding of their products and, in some cases, becoming an excellent lead."
The end result was that, in addition to the crowds observing the action, over 300 people participated in the VR experience at the booth.
"This is a major tradeshow for us that we attend every year," the client said. "Because of the VR experience that Design Center created, this year we had good conversations, got a lot of hot leads and had a much better conversion rate than we had last year."
As with most of the products Design Center develops, the client will be able to reconfigure the platform for other projects—including mobile applications. "We will probably build off this project next year for the same event," the client said. "But in the meantime, we will also use it for our regional shows. There's just no question that there has been and will continue to be a big pay off from this project. I definitely would recommend Design Center and I already have."

Space Probe Delivers ‘A Message from the Neighbours’ in New Science Fiction Novella

Earth's radio telescopes detect a message from intelligent life, in Vincent J. Hyde's new science fiction, "A Message from the Neighbours" (published by Balboa Press). As a spaceship approaches, Director of Space Research Joseph Samuels wonders: are these aliens friend or foe? A space probe from another galaxy is heading toward the Earth's solar system. Two unarmed astronauts are sent to intercept the space probe one light year from the solar system. When the space probe connects with the shuttle, the space probe's occupant, a robot called Interface, gives the astronauts a visual recording that he explains is the "Message from the Neighbours." Once the astronauts return to Earth, the message plays. It turns out that the message, delivered by Interface's image, is a description of the status of the neighbours star system some 300,000 years ago.

Hyde hopes that his book pushes readers to consider that "Intelligent life elsewhere in the universe may not necessarily be aggressive and violent if one believes in a Creator."

About the Author
Vincent J. Hyde was born in September 1954 in Calcutta, India. While living in Calcutta he studied in Saint Xavier's College. He migrated to Sydney, Australia, in February 1970. While living in Sydney, he completed his secondary education at Marcellin College and Merrylands High School, where he obtained his higher school certificate in 1973. He completed the electrical engineering degree course at the University of New South Wales in 1979. He earned a postgraduate diploma in illumination design at the University of Sydney in 1983. He worked as an electrical engineer at the NSW Public Works from 1979 to 2014 and retired from active engineering duties in 2014. Since 2014 he has been writing to continue his professional development. He has written two books published by Balboa Press: "Heaven and Earth" and "A Journey from Dust to Consciousness." He is a current member of the Institution of Engineers Australia, a retired Chartered Professional Engineer.

In a new article released in Applied Economic Perspectives & Policy (AEPP) "Do Walmart Supercenters Improve Food Security?" Charles Courtemanche from the University of Kentucky along with Art Carden, Xilin Zhou, Murugi Ndirangu, discover whether opening Walmart Supercenters closer to residents will improve the food security. Courtemanche says, "Previous research links Walmart Supercenters to higher obesity rates. Our study examines the other side of the coin: that the low food prices at Walmart can also lead to beneficial changes in eating habits by making it easier for families to afford enough food. In other words, Walmart's cheap food may enable some people to eat too much, but it also helps others to eat enough."
