Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists Opens State-of-the-Art Veterinary Hospital Finalizing its Recovery After Hurricane Harvey Devastation

Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists (GCVS) is pleased to announce the opening of its new, state-of-the-art hospital at 8042 Katy Freeway (I-10 and Chimney Rock/Wirt Rd.), after its former hospital was destroyed in Hurricane Harvey. An internationally respected veterinary emergency and specialty hospital that has cared for pets in the Lone Star State since 1989, in its new location, GCVS is now one of the largest veterinary specialty hospitals in Texas.

Each year, GCVS treats more than 50,000 patients, from dogs and cats to exotic animals such as birds and reptiles. GCVS was the focus of two seasons of Nat Geo WILD's Animal ER, which aired worldwide in 2016–17. The new 50,292-square-foot hospital, located at the intersection of I-10 and Chimney Rock/Wirt Rd., will bring together 14 departments and over 50 veterinarians, including 30 board-certified specialists, and more than 200 support staff under one roof. GCVS offers the following veterinary medical specialties:

The new hospital marks an important milestone in the hospital's 30-year history. Like so many families and businesses in the Houston area, GCVS was ravaged by Hurricane Harvey in August 2017. Its home at 1111 West Loop South was destroyed by the massive flood Harvey dumped on Houston. Not only did many of its more than 250 employees deal with personal loss as a result of Harvey, but they also volunteered their time to help triage and care for displaced pets all over Houston.

The Houston veterinary referring community rallied around GCVS by offering space in their clinics so that GCVS specialists could continue to provide medical care to Houston's pets. GCVS quickly built a temporary hospital so that they could resume offering their services at full capacity. They moved to this space in November of 2017, and began building their new, permanent location directly next door at 8042 Katy Freeway, which opened for business in January 2019.

The Aging Life Care Association® Provides Easy Tips for Eating and Aging Well

As we age, what we eat becomes more important. Our bodies need nutrients to stay healthy, but
chronic illness, medications that suppress appetite, and a lack of interest in formerly favorite foods can
reduce the quality of our diets and our wellbeing. Older adults who live alone can be particularly
susceptible to poor eating habits, as there is no one present on a consistent basis to monitor the types

The Aging Life Care Association is a proud partner of Go4Life, the National Institute on Aging's program
that educates older adults on maintaining healthy habits. Below are some tips from Go4Life on solving
common eating issues:

1. Isolation and Eating Alone
Older adults can be prone to increased isolation and reduced socialization. In turn, the older
adult may start eating less, or not at all. Finding communities through local churches and senior
centers that provide meals can help promote better eating habits.

2. Unable to Cook Anymore
Physical ailments, reduced mobility, and injury can stop older adults from being able to cook.
Local resources like Meals on Wheels can provide nutritious, hot food on a regular basis, as well
as company.

3. Problems Chewing and Swallowing
A reduced ability to chew and swallow meats, fruits, and vegetables can cause older adults to
become malnourished. Make an appointment with your doctor and/or dentist to get the
medical support necessary to continue to eat healthily.

4. Food is No Longer Interesting or Flavorful
Depression, medication side effects, or changing senses as we age can make foods that were
once a favorite unappealing. Try new foods and spices, vary your physical activity, and stay in
communication with family and healthcare professionals about your eating habits. Be alert to read related news.

5. Dehydration
Older adults can have a difficult time drinking enough water to stay hydrated. Try to include a
variety of beverages, like tea or lemonade, or slice up fruits to add to water.

Families who have a long-distance older family member, or an older family member who lives alone, can
find support through an Aging Life Care Professional, also known as geriatric care managers. ALCPs use
their expertise, experience, and resources to coordinate needed aging services, communicate effectively
with family members and health care professionals, and provide on-the-ground support for older adults.

Low-Cost, Self-Standing Sandwich Board A-Frame Signage, New from Sunrise Hitek!

Sunrise Hitek debuts new A-frame sandwich signage. A-frame signs are both economically priced and easy to use. Due to the "A" shape of the sign it can be set-up or collapsed in the blink of an eye. Since different users have different needs, Sunrise created two different versions of this sign. The quick fold A-frame option is both lightweight and economical, and a Sunrise exclusive design. SqwaQ to Unveil BVLOS Drone Command & Control Link at AUVSI

Soon, drones, air taxis and helicopters will be able to share the same airspace with unlimited range and onboard collision detection. Over the past year, a company called SqwaQ has been aligning with major partners in general aviation, telecommunications and drones to overcome the biggest hurdle restricting the wide scale operation of drones and air taxis: A reliable, robust data link with redundant safety backups and unlimited range that can support any aircraft flying from ground level up to 5500 feet altitude. SqwaQ announced today that it will unveil its patented 4G LTE data link at the upcoming AUVSI drone show in Chicago, April 30th – May 2nd.

Currently, drones rely on WiFi to fly, but this fails after 1-2 miles. Flying further can only be done using pre-programmed GPS coordinates that leave the pilot unable to control the drone or recover it in an emergency. Satellites require heavy equipment and cost over $1,000 per hour for enough bandwidth, so they are not an affordable option for civilian drones. 4G LTE provides a nationwide footprint but a single connection doesn't provide enough bandwidth and there is no backup if it fails. 5G cellular won't work for these aircraft either. The 5G cell towers have to point down toward the ground to work properly, so 5G signals cannot reach the altitudes where drones, air taxis and helicopters need to routinely fly.

The SqwaQbox is a bit like your cell phone, but combines up to 12 modem modules inside rather than just one, and slots for up to 24 Simm cards. All those connections are combined to create one fat, multi-redundant data pipe that can support multiple pilot view cameras, ADSB, VHF radio, pilot command and control, and any other IP traffic desired, at incredible speeds. Distinctive pottery made by the Martin Brothers of England from the 1870s to 1915 is featured in a sale report in Kovels On Antiques & Collectibles April 2019 newsletter. Martinware, as pieces are known to collectors, was made mostly of salt-glazed stoneware and prices for their grotesque bird-like creatures called "Wally Birds" fly high. Soon, It May Become Illegal for California MDs to Protect Children in Their Practice from Vaccine Injuries or Deaths

Although medical doctors and vaccine manufacturers have been protected from liability for vaccine injuries and deaths since the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986, soon California doctors may no longer be able to protect their patients from vaccine injuries or deaths.

In 2015, California removed the personal belief exemption to vaccination for both private and public school attendance, and the responsibility of recommending a medical exemption to at-risk children then fell on their physicians. Now, SB 276 seeks to prevent medical doctors from using their expertise and knowledge to protect at-risk children in their practice from vaccine injuries and deaths.

"If SB 276 becomes law, children at risk of severe vaccine injuries will be at the mercy of public health officials with whom they have no patient-doctor relationship, and past, current, and future medical exemptions will only be approved if a child's medical circumstances are found on a short government checklist," explained PIC Founder and President Dr. Shira Miller.

Physicians for Informed Consent has sent an open letter to California legislators opposing SB 276, citing that it is unscientific and unethical. "The chance of dying from measles in the United States is 1 in 10,000, based on data from the pre-vaccine era—when about 4 million U.S. Children got measles every year," said Dr. Miller. "1 in 10,000 is about the same chance as being struck by lightning once in your lifetime. The problem is that the risk of dying or being permanently disabled by the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine has not been proven to be less than 1 in 10,000. This makes mandating the MMR vaccine unscientific and unethical."

"We all want healthy children," Dr. Miller continued, "and one of the best ways to accomplish that is by educating parents and doctors, not by using bad science and medical bullying, which are the antithesis of the ethical principle of informed consent—upon which modern medicine hinges." Hit the Road, Jack (and Jill)! Millennials and Retirees Both Looking to Recreation Vehicles (RVs) to Live Cheaper, Add Adventure to Lives

Let's be honest. At one time or another we've all dreamed of renting an RV (Recreation Vehicle), traveling around the country, and visiting all those bucket-list destinations with unbridled freedom knowing that everywhere is home. More often than not the fantasy dissipates, and we return to a "normal, structured life." But for millions of Americans, the fantasy lives on in the form of fulfilling a lifelong dream upon retirement, or a new generation of consumers who want to live less expensively while staying connected to the world via mobile technology. ExpertFlyer.com caught up with the Bennett's in their RV while in the Florida Keys. Since 2014, they have been full-time RVers, enjoying the open road and sharing their adventures with others through their blog, RVLove.com and a new book titled, Living the RV Life: Your Ultimate Guide to Life on the Road. Julie Bennett was quick to note that the RV craze is being embraced by the two largest generations, albeit for different reasons: Baby Boomers and Millennials. "The 65-plus crowd is far more adventurous than the previous generation and they are looking for that youthful adventure," she explains. "But RVs are gaining traction with Millennials because buying a house is expensive and their keen handle on technology allows them to work virtually anywhere. The key is you don't have to buy new, you don't have to buy big, and you don't have to buy fancy to buy into the experience."

Marc Bennett added that although some folks are living the RV life for as little as $1,500 per month, this is certainly the "frugal" end of the spectrum. "However, it is not uncommon to find many people enjoying this lifestyle for under $3,000 per month." Marc and Julie agree that one of the great things about the RV lifestyle is that a higher percentage of monthly expenses are variable, not fixed. "The two biggest expenses are fuel and where you're staying," Julie said. "You can make a significant impact on your monthly budget just looking at those expenses."

The RV experience is also making inroads with Snowbirds, people who typically relocate to warmer climates in the winter and return home to their northern roots in the spring. "Living in an RV as a snowbird offers tremendous options," Marc Bennett explains. "Florida and Arizona are seasonal favorites among snowbirds but living in an RV gives them the flexibility to stay in one place for the season or move around at their discretion, and at a typically lower cost."

"Using a recreational vehicle is a wonderful way to see the country, especially if you aren't under any time constraints," says Chris Lopinto, president of ExpertFlyer.com. "While flying to a destination is usually faster, it can also be restrictive. Traveling in an RV provides great flexibility in scheduling. If you've seen everything you want to see at a location, you jump in the RV and leave. It's a bit more difficult when you're holding an airline ticket."

Spending long periods of time in an RV can have its drawbacks. Being confined to a smaller space, and on the road, means you may not have that "quiet space" you were accustomed to with a house. "Squeezing your whole lifestyle into a smaller space can bring up things that weren't topics of discussion before. But it also provides a great opportunity to communicate better with family members," added Marc Bennett.

It also helps to be handy with tools since something always seems to need some fixing on an RV. Whether it's loose bolts, rattling cupboards, or a broken something, keeping a few basic tools on board is a must. As is the willingness to have a go at DIY-ing many other repairs.
