Ivey Engineering Awards $1,000 Scholarship to UCLA Freshman Aubrey Butler

Ivey Engineering, Inc., (IEI), an engineering consulting firm, is pleased to announce the winner of the summer 2018 bi-annual scholarship essay contest. The winner, Aubrey Butler of Upland, California, will attend the University of California, Los Angeles in the fall.

Butler recently graduated from Upland High School with a 4.8 GPA and will major in biochemistry at UCLA. She hopes to eventually work in the biotech industry.

"My pronounced love of science is driven by my desire to help solve the constantly emerging problems on this earth," Butler says. "I believe that this is the only home that we have. I see myself in the future working towards solutions that are sustainable and viable," she says.

Butler competed with over 100 other college students from the United States and Canada. Applicants were tasked to write an 800- to 1,000-word essay on one of three topics and were judged for creativity and originality. Butler's winning essay discussed several unique ways to incorporate energy efficiency into a building. One tip she mentions in her essay is properly orienting a building during the construction phase.

"The goal is to position the building in such a way that solar gain for energy use is maximized while still minimizing heat gain during hot summer days," Butler explains in her essay.

"Aubrey's essay was focused and provided original insight and ideas on energy efficiency," says Scott Friesen, president of IEI. "You can tell that Aubrey spent some time doing research from the quality of her essay," he says.

Butler sees herself in the next 10 years pursuing a doctorate degree and doing research to develop compounds that will help alleviate chronic health problems.

IEI understands how valuable a college education is and also the expense that goes along with it. The scholarship contest is a win for both IEI and the student since it allows the firm to give back to the community.

AEC Provides $900,000 Facility for Energy Efficiency Project in Northern California

Using $900,000 in capital provided by Advanced Energy Capital ("AEC"), RTRO Energy saw to the installation of energy efficient windows, the optimization of the HVAC system and LED lighting for a large building owned by a municipality in Northern California. The energy efficiency retrofit began in May of 2017 and now, one year later, statistics have shown the city has achieved a 70% reduction in energy costs, and should see positive cash flow of $20,000 per year. The city had absolutely no out of pocket costs at all as the energy savings more than paid for the equipment and installation.

Exercise in Pregnancy, How Much and What Kind?

In most cases, exercising during pregnancy is safe and even recommended. Women who were physically active before becoming pregnant can generally continue to be active – though perhaps not at the same level – as long as it is comfortable and there are no complicating factors. Those who did not exercise regularly before pregnancy are generally advised by their healthcare provider to begin a program of moderate exercise. "Regular exercise is beneficial for expectant mothers," says obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. John Thoppil. "It can reduce the effects of some of the common discomforts of pregnancy, such as backache and fatigue, it can improve energy and mood, and it can help build the stamina needed for labor and delivery."

Which exercises are best during pregnancy?
The safest exercises for pregnant women are those that have the least risk of injury, involve the entire body, and are easy on the joints and muscles. Good choices include brisk walking, swimming and water workouts, stationary cycling, low-impact aerobics, and yoga and Pilates that have been modified for pregnant women. Women who are experienced joggers or racket-sports players may be able to continue those activities with medical approval.

Which activities should be avoided?
Activities that increase the risk of injury include those most likely to cause a fall, such as snow or water skiing, surfing, horseback riding, and gymnastics; contact sports, such as softball, basketball, and volleyball; and any exercise that includes jarring motions, rapid changes in direction, or extensive jumping, hopping, or bouncing. "Changes to the body during pregnancy must be taken into account in choosing exercises," says Dr. Thoppil. "For example, your center of gravity changes, particularly late in pregnancy, affecting balance and making falling more likely; that's why stationary cycling is safer than a standard bicycle. Also, pregnancy hormones make the joints more flexible and subject to injury, which explains why sudden movements and high-impact motion are best avoided."

How much exercise is recommended for pregnant women?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week, which could be 30 minutes all at once five days a week or broken up into smaller increments during the day. Those who are new to exercise should start with as little as five minutes a day and add five minutes each week, working up to 30 minutes of sustained activity.

Exercise may be inadvisable for women with certain medical conditions, such as heart disease or asthma, or for those with high-risk pregnancies due to a history of miscarriage, pre-term labor, or cervical insufficiency. Exercise should be stopped and a doctor consulted in the presence of warning signs such as dizziness or feeling faint, rapid or irregular heartbeat, chest or abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding or fluid leakage, muscle weakness, or any unusual or sudden physical irregularity.

Dr. Thoppil recommends these precautions and guidelines:

"Staying active during pregnancy is important and beneficial," says Dr. Thoppil. "Exercise strengthens the muscles, conditions the entire body, helps to maintain health, and keeps the pregnant woman feeling her best. Staying fit will help the expectant mother give her child the best opportunity for a healthy start in life."

Franklin County Visitors Bureau Invites All to Celebrate 1864 Weekend July 20-21 with The Burning, Old Market Day, A Cappella & Unplugged and More

1864 Weekend began as a kick-off event for Civil War 150 in 2011. Partnering with nearby Gettysburg PA, Franklin County highlighted its significant Civil War history. Over the past seven years, the event continues to grow as a celebration of the spirit of people and community.

In 2015, the event added a musical competition called A Cappella & Unplugged with auditions and three rounds of competition. A Cappella & Unplugged is back for this year's events, too. The finalists of this competition will perform beginning at 7 PM on Saturday, July 21, on the steps of the 1865 Franklin County Courthouse. The public picks the winner through a combination of Facebook likes and votes cast at the event, and the winner receives $500.

The Courthouse steps are also the stage for the 1864 burning event, creating a truly authentic backdrop, for the re-enactment done totally with lights and atmospheric effects. On July 30, 1864, Confederates demanded a ransom of $100,000 in gold or $500,000 in Yankee dollars or Chambersburg would be burned. The town was unable and unwilling to deliver the money, and the center of Chambersburg was fired. More than 2000 people were homeless and over 550 structures burned. Yet, the town returned, stronger than ever, and this is the basis of the annual celebration. It is a tribute to the strength of people and community.

"Since the first 1864 event, a common question is: why celebrate a town's burning," said Janet Pollard, Executive Director of Franklin County Visitors Bureau, the organization responsible for the annual event. Pollard explained, "1864 always celebrated the rebirth of the town and the spirit of the people, who brought Chambersburg to life." Be alert to the latest news.

Pollard connected the wisdom of Benjamin Franklin, for whom the county is named, to the history of July 30, 1864 by noting this Franklin maxim, "While we may not be able to control all that happens to us, we can control what happens inside us." The citizens of Chambersburg could not control the ransom demand or the destruction of so much of their town, but they could control what happened afterward. Today, Chambersburg stands as a proof of their strength and effort."

History and culture comes alive beginning on July 20 with the 1864 Civil War Ball at the Allison-Antrim Museum in Greencastle. From 7PM to 9:30PM, learn Victorian-era dances guided by the Victorian Dance Ensemble in the historic bank barn. Tickets are $15 a person and $25 a couple. The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) has just awarded David C. Barnett and Mary Fecteau of Ideastream with a National Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Video, Large Market Radio, after winning a Regional Edward R. Murrow award this past spring.

For more than 50 years, collectors across the country have turned to Terry Kovel for information on the identification, history and value of family treasures and antiques show and flea market finds. National Report Military Fraud Day is celebrated on July 2. National Report Military Fraud Day brings awareness to the amount of fraud against the military and teaches the public how to obtain a monetary reward for reporting it. Read news here.

Ten percent of military spending is lost due to fraud.* Because the Department of Defense is spending over $500 billion a year,** that means over $50 billion a year in military spending is lost to fraud. It's no wonder why we have a national economy crisis!
That's also why Congress authorized the Department of Justice (DOJ) to pay whistleblower rewards up to 30 percent of the amount it recovers based upon whistleblowers reporting fraud by any government contractor under any program, such as the military, DOD, Homeland Security, and Medicare.

Statistics for the DOJ whistleblower reward program***

National Report Military Fraud Day started in 2018. It was formed by Joel Hesch, a whistleblower attorney who spent over 15 years working in Department of Justice whistleblower reward office. While at DOJ, Mr. Hesch helped obtained over $1.2 billion in recoveries back for the government from those cheating the government and paid out hundred of millions in rewards to whistleblowers. Mr. Hesch formed his own law firm and now exclusively represents whistleblowers nationwide in filing for rewards for reporting fraud against the government, including government contractor fraud.

How to report military fraud and received a monetary reward?

There are two very different ways of reporting military fraud, with two very different results.

    1. File for a Reward under the DOJ Whistleblower Reward Program Read all the latest news.

The first way to report military fraud is to have a whistleblower attorney, such as Mr. Hesch, help blow the whistle under the Department of Justice (DOJ) reward program, which pays whistleblower rewards of between 15% to 30% of the amount DOJ recovers.

When a person reports military fraud under the DOJ program, the government must open an investigation and inform the attorney of the results. Thus, applying for a reward through a whistleblower attorney is the only way to ensure an investigation takes place (rather than just calling an agency hotline). Today, over three-fourths of the government's fraud cases are DOJ whistleblower reward cases. Thus, the government is counting on whistleblowers to bring fraud cases to DOJ and receive a reward in the process.

    2. Report fraud to the Department of Defense

The second way to report government contractor fraud is to report it directly to the affected military agency or the Department of Defense (DOD). Read this for more information.

Second, you can fill out a form on the DOD website, known as a Hotline Complaint. That web page describes what you can report and what not to report using the Hotline Complaint form. It also allows you to report the fraud anonymously.

There are a few downsides by reporting the fraud to the DOD or specific military agency and not by filing for a reward with the Department of Justice. First, there is no reward. Second, the agency does not have to open an investigation. Third, the agency does not have to tell you the results of any investigation. Nevertheless, there are times when it makes sense to report fraud directly to the agency through its website or by calling its hotline.

There are several other national days for obtaining a whistleblower reward for reporting fraud against the government, including:

Grenoplus Launches Compact Device That Syncs and Charges Up to Six Mac Products at Once

Today, Grenoplus launched iMate, a charger, battery backup, and portable docking system in one that charges and syncs up to six Apple devices at a time. It starts at the early bird price of $99 USD on Indiegogo ($199 USD+up retail).

iMate is an all-in-one solution that eliminates the need for a bag full of chargers, adapters, and dongles. It's designed to be ultra-compact, easy to use and portable, and is compatible with all Mac products, including all series of MacBook, MacBook Pro, iPhone, iPad and even the Apple Watch.

Currently, Macbook Pros do not have USB, SD card, and HDMI ports and there are no docking stations available for Mac products.

"We wanted to solve these annoying issues and create a device to that would allow users to quickly charge and sync all Apple devices simultaneously," said Chief Executive Officer HS Chan. iMate comes equipped with two USB-C PD fast charge ports, with 10Gb/s of data speed. It has a USB 3.0 with 5Gb data speed, USB 2.0 with 480Mb/s data speed, and SD card port with 104Mb/s data speed. It transfers data to multiple devices quickly and conveniently.

The device also includes HDMI 4K ultra display technology, which means users can connect a MacBook to TV through an HDMI port to view shows and movies in high-quality quality and color.

Although the robot will keep its original job of communicating with and entertaining office visitors, it has picked up a few new duties as well. And with several modifications, the 'School of Robots,' an initiative of The Foundation for Future Reality, has ensured that the Lynx can play a bigger role in office visits. Happy 1.0, as the new and improved robot is called, is now able to ask important screening questions for Medicare preventive visits & yearly wellness exams and can also send the answers to a patient's file.

Visual communications become more powerful in environments such as schools, hospitals, hotels, trade shows and conference centers when the presentation is brought directly to the targeted audience on a rolling TV cart.

Along with the capability to hold the largest display screens on the market today, this cart also can support thick and heavy interactive boards, such as the ActivPanel from Promethean®, setting it apart from most other rolling TV carts on the market.

"The cart allows any presenter to bring a visual 'wow factor' right to the viewer," said Karenann Brow, Tripp Lite's Director of Product Marketing. The presenter can mount displays from 60 in. to 100 in. on this sturdy steel and aluminum cart. The mounting bracket has a quick-release spring lock to adjust the height of the display from 47 in. to 65 in. from the floor. The screen can also be tilted to eliminate distracting glare.

This new cart is an addition to Tripp Lite's selection of more than 60 floor-standing, wall-mount and desk-mount display mounts.
