Canine Camp Getaway of NY, the ultimate, all-inclusive getaway for dogs and the people who love them, celebrates 10 years of dog vacations this year with two dog-friendly getaway events planned for June 24-28 and September 15-18 in Lake George, NY. And never has "come" and "stay" been so much fun!
Packed with a host of activities that dogs and their humans can enjoy together, the all-inclusive dog camp vacations offer 50+ classes a day taught by top instructors, including everything from agility, hiking, nose work and swimming in the dog-friendly pool to lure coursing, barn hunt, flyball, tracking, canine freestyle dance and even dog yoga – as well as seminars by top veterinarians and t rainers, Canine CPR classes, "Barks & Crafts" sessions, nightly Yappy Hour and dog-friendly evening entertainment.
So why take your dog on vacation?
"Studies consistently show that dogs lower our blood pressure, help us de-stress, stave off depression and provide real and measurable health benefits. At the same time, dogs that enjoy regular physical and mental stimulation live longer. So going on vacation together benefits everyone!" explains Canine Camp Getaway owner and founder Janice Costa.
Costa, who lives by the motto, "Have dogs, will travel," was first inspired to create a dog-friendly getaway a decade ago when she couldn't find vacation options for herself and her two dogs. Her goal was to create a dog's "dream vacation" with i nput from her own two dogs, Jessie and Lexie, who happily embraced their role as camp "ambassadogs."
Today, Lexie, who learned to swim at her first camp and has since gone on to become an AKC Dock Diving National Champion, oversees the camp's dog activities with her younger sister Kaylee, while founding ambassadog Jessie runs the Heaven Chapter of Canine Camp Getaway. "We always say that our dog vacations are 'heaven on earth' for dogs, so it only makes sense that when they leave this earth, they get to enjoy the 'heaven on heaven' version of dog camp!" she quips.
Over the past decade, the twice-annual vacations have attracted guests from all over the country and Canada. "People will go to the ends of the earth if it means their dog will have a really good time," Costa maintains. "And with all the opportunities to romp, play, swim, hike, run agility and find treats...well, if you're a dog, it doesn't get much better than this!"
< p>But it's not just about the dogs, Costa maintains. "Dogs teach us valuable lessons about life and love; about slowing down and living in the moment; about the value of playtime and vacation…and most of all, about making memories with the ones you love. And that's important – whether your loved ones have two legs or four."Giving back is also an important part of Canine Camp Getaway's mission, and over the past decade, the camps have raised more than $35,000 for animal charities and rescues, from canine cancer research and service dog organizations to a charity that cares for dogs of deployed military to a variety of dog rescue groups in the U.S. and Canada.
Asked about the evolution of her business, Costa recalls, "Ten years ago, when things were a lot less dog friendly, I told people about my dream of building a dog vacation getaway…and ev eryone, even my own parents, thought I was crazy!" But over the past 10 years, her "crazy" idea took off, as dogs have become increasingly valued as friends, companions and family members. "So many dog lovers today want to spend their vacations with their dogs, rather than leaving them behind," Costa says. "And what better way to do that than at a vacation getaway planned for dogs, by dogs, surrounded by other dogs and dog lovers?"
Looking ahead, Costa is excited about celebrating the company's 10th anniversary and making new dog vacation memories at the 2018 Getaways, and she notes that reservations for the June 24-28 and September 15-18 camps are still available, with friendly dogs welcome.
