John Burgess, President and Chief Security Officer of Mainstream Technologies cited a national survey of cyber security customers indicating that 28% of business respondents believe that purchasing cyber insurance is all they need to be secure. "Cyber insurance and legal advice can be helpful in recovering from a breach. However, our cyber security program offers both preventive maintenance to reduce the likelihood of breaches as well as recovery if and when it is needed," said Burgess.
According to Kevin McBride of Stephens Insurance in Dallas, stand-alone cyber insurance policies are a complicated product offered by many providers with little-to-no standardization. Underwriters look at several things with a critical eye such as the size and nature of content in one's database and the security practices of the business. Ultimately, McBride said: "Your first call ought to be to a cyber security firm to get a risk profile of your business because your insurance policy coverage and costs will be based on that profile."
Additionally, there are multi-faceted legal costs associated with a cyber incident according to Meredith Causey of Quattlebaum, Grooms & Tull law firm. "What's at risk includes the cost of legal advice, notifications, forensic investigation, loss from reputational harm, as well as potential damages to third parties," said Causey.
