Exhibit of Rare Italian Master-Crafted Violas to Coincide with Primrose Viola Competition in Los Angeles Announced

Two prominent violin shops – Boston-based Reuning & Son Violins and Benning Violins – have announced a joint viola exhibit at Benning's Los Angeles-based violin shop. The exhibit, "The Viola: An Exhibition of Sound, Form and Beauty", will feature a collection of master-crafted Italian violas and coincides with the prestigious 2018 Primrose International Viola Competition. Both shops are renowned internationally for providing service and sales of fine violins, violas and cellos.

"We're pleased to present a number of notable violas to this extraordinary exhibit," said violinmaker and preeminent dealer Christopher Reuning. "It is extremely uncommon for this many important instruments to be assembled for sale in one place."

The exhibit, held from June 12thto the 16th, will bring together an extraordinary collection of fine Italian violas by Amati, Maggini, Tononi, Scarampella, Guadagnini and other old-world masters. Bows crafted by noted French makers Sartory, Peccatte, Ouchard and many of the finest contemporary makers will also be exhibited.

The 2018 Primrose International Viola Competition is held every four years in Los Angeles and is sponsored by The Colburn School and the American Viola Society. The competition is named after the late renowned Scottish violist, author and teacher William Primrose. Read this here.

"Among the participants, judges and attendees, the competition will attract some of the greatest violists and viola enthusiasts to Los Angeles," stated Eric Benning. "With this collection of violas we've assembled just a few miles away from the competition, I wouldn't be surprised if the Earth trembled a bit."

Benning, a distinguished third generation violinmaker, recently completed a bench copy of a historic viola crafted in 1545 by famed luthier Peregrino Di Zenetto. The Los Angeles Philharmonic commissioned the "Zenetto Viola" in 2017.

All violas and bows on exhibit will be available for examination, trial on the premises and purchase. Players will be provided facilities to examine and play the instruments in a private showroom.

"For enthusiasts of the viola, Los Angeles is the place to be in June," stated Reuning. "Important figures in the viola world will be there. While the size of the exhibit itself is modest, in the world of the viola, this occasion, in context with the competition, is significant." Read here.
