Perfect Little Women - New Study Looks At The Pervasive Effects of The Perceived Need to be Flawless

International Women's Day is a celebration of the societal barriers that women have fought long, and fought hard, to break down. Simone de Beauvoir dared to challenge the patriarchy's belief of a woman's role, and rights, in society. Frida Kahlo spurred conversation on forbidden topics through her artwork. Mary Church Terrel wasn't just one of the first African American women to earn a college degree, she was also a strong advocate for women's right to vote. In spite of the progress women have made in the fight for equality, research from Queendom reveals that many still feel they are not enough … they believe that in order to be loved, respected and accepted, they need to be better, look better, do more, be more, give more. Read news here.

Analyzing data from nearly 1,000 women who took the Perfectionism Test, data from Queendom's study indicate that Gen Z girls and Gen Y women feel the most pressure to be perfect. This perceived pressure is less prominent in Gen Xers and Baby Boomers, but still present. Here's what Queendom's data revealed:

WOMEN TEND TO SET EXCESSIVELY HIGH PERFORMANCE STANDARDS FOR THEMSELVES

> They are only proud of their work if it receives praise from a teacher/manager.

> They are only satisfied when a task is done perfectly

> They believe that failing an assignment at school/work makes them a failure as a person.

WOMEN TEND TO SET EXCESSIVELY HIGH PERSONAL STANDARDS FOR THEMSELVES

> They want to excel at everything they take on.

> They believe they will never be rejected (by a significant other, by friends, etc.) if they are perfect.

> They constantly worry about making mistakes.

WOMEN FEEL PRESSURE FROM THEIR FAMILY TO BE PERFECT

> They feel that no matter how hard they try, it's never good enough for their family or partner.

> They are afraid of being criticized if they mess up.

> They have trouble saying no to requests because they don't want to let people down.

WOMEN FEEL PRESSURE FROM SOCIETY TO BE PERFECT

> The thought of being considered "average" terrifies them.

> They believe that in order to be respected, they need to have a lot of money.

> They believe they have to be in perfect physical shape to be attractive.

"Even though most women know deep down that perfection is unattainable, they still strive for it," explains Dr. Jerabek, president of PsychTests, the parent company of Queendom. "It's that duality that causes so much heartache; that constant battle between the woman they want to be, and the woman they feel they need to be. For example, the vast majority of the women in our study said that they are proud of their achievements. Yet, more than half of them still worry about what other people think of them, loved ones and strangers alike. On the one hand, I believe we have come very far in terms of shattering beauty and gender role stereotypes, and making women feel more comfortable with who they are. On the other hand, so many women are still ridden by self-doubt and a need for external validation, still struggle with self-esteem issues and imposter syndrome, and still feel that self-love is selfish and egotistical."

Why do so many women still feel like they're not good enough?

"Because this concept of the 'ideal woman' still floats around on social media, on television, and in movies - and it's a moving target. One day, women should be thin, blond influencers. The next day they should emulate the pony-tailed perfect mom who always makes healthy snacks, or the curvy, career-oriented woman. So it's a constant everyday pressure women put on themselves to be everything to everyone. However, while it is true that women are bombarded with the unrealistic messages about the ideal female, we are as guilty, if not more, of imposing impossible standards on ourselves. We are not helpless victims. We have a voice. We can step into our power without blaming our lack of self-love on society. We can take responsibility for our own happiness - and taming our perfectionism is a great step in the right direction. My hope for women on March 8th is for them to choose to be who they want to be, and to do what their heart calls them to do - and not give a damn about what anyone else thinks."

American Litho adds even more sensory appeal to print campaigns with custom coating system from Harris & Bruno

American Litho, one of the nation's fastest growing print and cross-channel marketing strategists, has added a custom coating system to its HP T240 HD digital press suite, greatly increasing the speed and design flexibility offered for all clients.

The new coater is the only one of its kind in the world, according to Tyler Grostic, lead installation engineer in charge of service and training for Harris & Bruno International, the system's manufacturer. Read all the related news.

"This is a fully custom, high-speed system that handles a broad range of specialty coatings, including UV and aqueous coatings," Grostic explained. "It works in duplex, applying coatings to both sides of the press sheet, and is compatible with an incredible array of paper stocks." Read news here.

The coater works with up to 7 ink colors, keeping pace with the amazing speed of HP's digital presses, he added.

During the installation, Grostic and the ALitho team ran a full series of tests with various inks and substrates to how the system would perform under different conditions. "After making all the needed adjustments, ALitho now has a high-powered working solution," he stated.

The team ran into a slight power source-related issue, but the system immediately sent data to HP's support team and the matter was quickly resolved. "This speaks to the strong relationship American Litho has with HP," Grostic added. Click here to read the latest news.

Harris & Bruno has been building integrated coaters and primers that are compatible with high-end presses for the last 8 years, Grostic reports. "We are seeing a lot of growth in this area as companies prepare for larger campaigns with tougher specs and more aggressive schedules," he said. "We are here to assure American Litho can deliver on its quality promises."

Tony Ferruzza, head of digital production for ALitho, is enthusiastic about what the new system can do for clients in retail (in-store and on-line), travel, med tech, financial services, education and more.

"In addition to speed, accuracy and design flexibility, the system lays down coatings that have better resistance to scuffing or rubbing," Ferruzza explained. "This matters a great deal, especially for catalogs and pieces that move through the mail. You want the piece to look amazing when it reaches the customer's hands, so durability matters."

Ferruzza is proud that ALitho has been recognized by HP for running the highest volume of digital impressions on HP equipment of any startup printer in the nation. "We are fully committed to HP, with plans to add another T240 HD system later this year," he noted. Read here.

Specialty coatings add incredible visual and sensory appeal, Ferruzza noted, citing studies that show a significant lift in response rates when gloss, matte and textured effects are added to direct mail pieces.

"With 100% variable messaging and imaging, we can use known customer preferences to maximize customer response," Ferruzza said. "Instant make-ready times and short cycle times mean that mailings reach target customers at exactly the right moment."

Recently the company added a new coater from Tec Lighting to its HP 12000 system so that all digital campaigns can incorporate specialty coatings at top speed.

"We can add a gloss on one side of the piece and a matte finish on the other. The design possibilities really are endless. And we're very proud that we're running these sophisticated digital jobs twice as fast as any of our competitors" Ferruzza noted.

American Litho, Inc. is a privately held company providing brand-building services for retail, insurance, financial services, manufacturing, automotive, food and beverage, non-profit development and many other industries. A talented team of hundreds work in the company's 350,000-square-foot headquarters in Carol Stream, Illinois, with additional team members around the country. Nationwide Insurance Becomes Human-Animal Bond Certified Company

The North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) and the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI), joint founders of the Human-Animal Bond Certification program, announced today that Nationwide, the first and largest provider of pet health insurance in the U.S., has become a Human-Animal Bond Certified Company. Be alert to read related news.

"Nationwide has earned this meaningful recognition through its significant commitment to human-animal bond research, education, and professional development," said Steven Feldman, HABRI Executive Director. "Being a Human-Animal Bond Certified Company recognizes that Nationwide is strengthening the human-animal bond as a core part of its mission."

As part of the certification process, all Nationwide pet associates will complete human-animal bond training, learning about the science behind the human-animal bond and gaining a deeper understanding of how this science supports pet health and the practice of veterinary medicine. The human-animal bond is a mutually beneficial and dynamic relationship between people and animals that is influenced by behaviors considered essential to the health and well-being of both.

"Becoming Human-Animal Bond certified is an honor and a process that we are committed to in every interaction we have with pets and their families. We know the more we learn, the more we can protect them," said Heidi Sirota, Nationwide's Chief Pet Officer.

Launched in 2018, the NAVC Human-Animal Bond Certification prepares veterinarians and animal care staff to recognize and promote the importance of the bond between pets and their families. The program evaluates the science, communication, community engagement, animal welfare and wellness, and medical care needed to create and maintain a positive human-animal bond.

"The Human-Animal Bond Certification gives veterinarians and all those who support them additional tools and training to further understand and safeguard this bond," said NAVC CEO Gene O'Neill. "The NAVC is committed to expanding the benefits of the human-animal bond to as many health care professionals as possible. We are proud to bestow Nationwide with the Human-Animal Bond Certified Company designation, and we thank them for their commitment to this important education initiative."

The leading role of Nationwide is evidenced by their commitment to education and support of the Human-Animal Bond Certification program. More than a thousand professionals have signed up for this certification, which offers 22 hours of Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE) -approved continuing education credit.

Important for their certification, Nationwide has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to the human-animal bond by making sizeable investments in independent research on the benefits of companion animals for those such as people with autism, veterans with PTSD and people with cancer diagnoses. The work also researches the benefits of animals in assisting children and adults on the autistic spectrum.

Nationwide's support for the human-animal bond and the role of pets in society is further demonstrated by their groundbreaking research on pet-inclusive workplaces. In partnership with HABRI, Nationwide has shown how pets and pet-friendly benefits, including pet health insurance, are increasingly important to the millennial workforce, enhancing employee wellbeing, as well as company recruitment, retention, engagement and presenteeism.

"Nationwide is committed to protecting our members' pets through our direct relationships with pet owners and through our veterinary partners. That is why we are so proud to support human-animal bond research," said Dr. Jules Benson, Nationwide's associate vice president of Veterinary Relations. "Understanding and sharing the science of the human-animal bond helps all of us as individuals, families and communities."
