VA Maryland Health Care Offers Veterans Technological Options for Appointments

At the VA Maryland Health Care System, veterans can virtually meet with their health care providers anywhere using their phones, computers or tablets with the VA Video Connect application. Since its rollout in July 2019, the VA Video Connect app has helped veterans get the care they need via secure, live video telehealth appointments. The VA Video Connect app has proven to be a special benefit for mental health patients and for veterans where distance can serve as a barrier to accessing health care services.

"This is about meeting the needs of veterans where they are," said Dr. Adam M. Robinson, Jr., director of the VA Maryland Health Care System. "VA Video Connect allows clinicians to hold virtual health care appointments with veterans from anywhere using secure and private connections. It makes health care more accessible and reduces travel times for our patients."

Veterans and their health care providers decide together whether to use VA Video Connect for a medical visit. Veterans should talk to their VA providers about using VA Video Connect if they live far from a VA facility; have medical conditions that make it difficult to travel to a VA medical facility; lack time to attend an in-person appointment; or a hands-on physical examination is not required.

For veterans using the app, the expanded choice is an advantage. Army veteran Keith Hertzog, 68, and Marine veteran Steven Levine, 31, agree that the technology has offered more choices that saved them travel time to and from appointments, but more importantly, helped them to stay on track with their treatment plans.

"The drive—mostly traffic being a big factor—made it difficult to get to all my appointments. I'd miss some of them due to the commute," said Hertzog, a Delaware resident who drives to the Cambridge VA Outpatient Clinic for care. "Another important aspect of using the technology is that my wife can now participate with me, and that's been helpful."

For younger veterans like Levine who are already accustomed to using technology, the VA Video Connect offers a seamless transition to keeping up with health care appointments when work and other commitments interfere with maintaining health care visits.

"I'm always streaming video and used to FaceTime, so the convenience of being able to meet with my doctors using the technology makes it easier for me to get care in the early morning hours without having to leave the house, or when I'm out of town," he said. "It's great. I love it! I can talk to my doctor anywhere, anytime. I can go on vacation and still keep my appointment."
Hertzog and Levine urge other veterans to give it a try. "At first, I wasn't sure if I could manage it, but then after I did, I saw how easy it was. It really is like a face-to-face appointment, except that it's on the phone," Hertzog said. Continue reading.

The VA Video Connect app works on nearly any mobile or web-based device that has an internet connection and a web camera, including smart phones and laptops, among others. Veterans can visit the VA Video Connect app test site on their mobile devices to test if they are compatible with the program.
Veterans can learn more about VA Video Connect at https://mobile.va.gov/app/va-video-connect. Click here.

The VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS) provides a broad spectrum of medical, surgical, rehabilitative, mental health and outpatient care to veterans at three medical centers and five outpatient clinics located throughout the state. More than 52,000 veterans from various generations receive care from VAMHCS annually. Nationally recognized for its state-of-the-art technology and quality patient care, VAMHCS is proud of its reputation as a leader in veterans' health care, research and education. It costs nothing for veterans to enroll for health care with the VA Maryland Health Care System and it could be one of the more important things a veteran can do. To enroll for VA health care, interested veterans can call 877-222-8387 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., or they can visit http://www.va.gov and clinic on "Apply now for VA health

Despite Decline, CMI Outlook Remains Positive

China has been the focal point of the economic world, and rightfully so—trade wars and tariffs with the U.S. and now the outbreak of COVID-19, but credit professionals aren't reporting much change in the latest Credit Managers' Index (CMI) from NACM. February's CMI declined two-tenths of a point to 56.2. Three of the four combined favorable factors improved in February, yet several unfavorables dragged the overall reading down. "The bottom line is there has been very little change despite the factors that might have affected the business community," NACM Economist Chris Kuehl, Ph.D. said. "This is not to say that next month will not show reaction to all the global angst over the spread of the virus, but it is not showing up yet. The growth noted [in January] faltered a bit, but the data still remains strong, so it may be too early to draw many conclusions."

Sales, new credit applications and amount of credit extended improved in February, but it was the sharp decline in dollar collections that raises concerns. "This seems to signal that more companies are starting to guard their cash flow," Kuehl said. Rejections of credit applications (up 1.8 points) and accounts placed for collection (no change) were the only combined unfavorable factors to not decrease. Disputes fell over two points as did filings for bankruptcies. However, all six factors remained in expansion territory (score above 50) for the third straight month.

The manufacturing sector has seen its ups and downs in recent months. "Manufacturing most definitely has been facing some serious headwinds, but there are still sectors that remain relatively healthy," Kuehl said. "The slump has been pronounced in sectors connected to the aerospace industry as well as the agricultural sector, but automotive has been holding more or less steady. The worry now is that interruptions in the Chinese supply chain will have a negative impact." Manufacturing favorables remained at 62, but the unfavorables dipped more than a point to bring the sector's overall index to 55.9, which is still the second-highest reading (January 2020) in the last year.

The service sector paralleled manufacturing—the favorables remained the same month-to-month at 62.3. Sales improved slightly, while new credit applications jumped more than a point. The unfavorables actually improved in February, increasing a tenth of a point. Rejections of credit applications saw a large bump, but dollar amount beyond terms deteriorated. Overall, the service sector improved a tenth of a point. "Services will likely see a spring rebound in the next month or two," Kuehl said, "but there will be many keeping a close watch on the COVID-19 virus to see what effect it has on consumer behavior. … The service sector is always slow this time of year and, thus far, manufacturing is holding steady enough with all eyes on the impact of the virus outbreak."

Multi-Hall of Fame Doo-Wop Legend Kenny Vance and The Planotones Releases New CD, ‘For Your Love’

Multi-Hall of Fame doo-wop sensation Kenny Vance and The Planotones is thrilled to announce they have released their new album, "For Your Love." Be alert to read related news.

"This is an album that celebrates authenticity, and people who hear our music know it's the real thing, and will bring a smile to their face and bring back feelings they love to remember," said Vance, currently on a 12-city U.S. tour.

During his phenomenal career, Vance co-founded Jay and the Americans. The immensely popular group opened for The Beatles' and The Rolling Stones' first U.S. performances in 1964.

On the new album, Kenny and his son Ladd, the newest member of the group, recorded a duet titled "Devoted to You." "It's rare for a father and son to be able to record together these days, but this song that I knew in my youth expresses a sentiment that I knew we could both connect to immediately – a very special experience for both of us to share," said Vance. The song caps off a heartfelt album even those new to doo-wop will appreciate.

"In 'Tear Drops,' our recording honors the original recording by Lee Andrews & the Hearts, which includes a sample of his actual record (courtesy UMG) within ours," said Vance. "For those not familiar with Lee Andrews & the Hearts, Andrews was the father of Questlove, who is the music director/band leader on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.' We took care to do the song in the same key and tempo as the original, so the sample would fit seamlessly. Through this recording, we pay homage to one of our all-time idols."

The new album includes "Love Me," a song Vance especially enjoyed recording. "One night while surfing the web, I discovered an original song that a Tex-Mex group had recorded in the late '50s," said Vance. "It attracted me immediately; because of its simplicity and its raw emotion."

The list of songs on the new CD includes classics "Sea Cruise," "Daddy's Home" and "Love Letters."

The new CD can be downloaded from iTunes, Google Play Music, and other top music providers. The 13-song album is the distinguished group's eighth since its inception in 1992.

The Planotones were a fictional musical group Vance created for the film "American Hot Wax," for which he produced the soundtrack in 1977. Later, Vance led the group in its leap from the screen to reality to its incarnation as the Planotones of today. Vance's signature song, "Looking for an Echo," has garnered millions of YouTube hits.

Today, the six-person group includes founder and lead singer Kenny Vance, and two-time Grammy-nominated Music Director Johnny Gale.

In 2002, Kenny Vance was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and in 2007 he was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. In 2019, Kenny Vance and The Planotones (http://kennyvanceandtheplanotones.com) received the East Coast Music Hall of Fame award for "Best Music Maker" in the "Vocal Group" category. Vance is also a multi-platinum-selling record producer, with the soundtracks of movies "Animal House" and "Eddie & the Cruisers."

United States Mint Hosts Ceremonial Strike of 2020 Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin

United States Mint (Mint) Director David J. Ryder hosted members and supporters of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame today at a ceremonial striking of the 2020 Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Dollar Coin.

During his remarks, Director Ryder stated that "every day, across the Nation, the United States Mint connects Americans through coins, and it is our great privilege to connect America to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame." Ryder went on to announce that "the most unique feature of these coins is that they will be the first-ever colorized coins produced by the United States Mint! Coins with proof and uncirculated finishes will go on sale April 4th, and the colorized versions of the silver and clad coins will go on sale at a later date."

Other event participants included Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame President John Doleva; basketball legends Julius Erving and Sheryl Swoopes; and Massachusetts Congressman Richard Neal, sponsor of the legislation authorizing the Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Program. Click here to read the latest news.

The silver dollar is one of three coins in the 2020 Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Program. The Mint will also produce a five dollar gold coin and a half-dollar clad coin as authorized by Public Law 115-343 in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

All three coins will be dome-shaped and will feature common obverse (heads) and reverse (tails) designs. The common obverse design features three players reaching for the ball in unison, reflecting how the sport of basketball has brought together diverse people around the world through a simple, universal, and unifying athletic experience. Their arms are slightly elongated to emphasize the full exertion of physical and mental energy required to excel in this sport. The rim and net are subtle background design elements complementing the three players. Inscriptions are "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "2020."

The common reverse design depicts a basketball about to pass through the net, with the inscriptions of "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM." Additional inscriptions include "FIVE DOLLARS" on the gold coin, "ONE DOLLAR" on the silver dollar, and "HALF DOLLAR" on the clad coin.

Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) artist Justin Kunz created the obverse design, which was selected from a public competition as required by the authorizing legislation. The common reverse design is by AIP artist Donna Weaver.

The Mint will produce and issue up to 50,000 $5 gold coins, 400,000 $1 silver coins, and 750,000 half–dollar clad coins. Surcharges collected from coin sales—$35 for each gold coin, $10 for each silver coin, and $5 for each half–dollar coin—are authorized to be paid to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame to fund an endowment that will enable increased operations and educational programming.

About the United States Mint
Congress created the United States Mint in 1792, and the Mint became part of the Department of the Treasury in 1873. As the Nation's sole manufacturer of legal tender coinage, the Mint is responsible for producing circulating coinage for the Nation to conduct its trade and commerce. The Mint also produces numismatic products, including proof, uncirculated, and commemorative coins; Congressional Gold Medals; silver and bronze medals; and silver and gold bullion coins. Its numismatic programs are self-sustaining and operate at no cost to taxpayers.

In her own words, Cacho details how she suffered in silence with this condition and how, armed with courage, determination, and surprising allies, was able to overcome it and transform her life at every stage of her career development.
