Correlation One's 'Data Science for All: Women's Summit' Aims to Tackle Dramatic Gender Imbalances in AI & Data Science

Correlation One is announcing the inaugural Data Science for All: Women's Summit in New York City this October. The initiative is designed to help women with technical backgrounds bridge 'the last mile' into data science jobs.

"Women are vastly under-represented in careers in Data Science and changing hiring practices alone will not solve this problem because it's a supply-side issue," said Correlation One Co-Founders & Co-CEOs, Sham Mustafa and Rasheed Sabar. "Correlation One's Data Science for All: Women's Summit is a novel program that provides free data science training and mentorship as well as connections to jobs with industry-leading employers." Read this for more information.

The invite-only Women's Summit includes two weeks of free instructor-led data science training and professional development workshops. Participants are also matched with experienced women mentors who provide technical and non-technical workplace guidance. The summit culminates in a one-day career fair on October 25th where participants present their work to top employers actively hiring data and analytics talent.

"Data Science and AI are booming but we're on the ground floor. We have an opportunity to fix the diversity issue while it's still early," added Deepali Vyas, senior partner at Korn Ferry and advisor to the Women's Summit.

The Women's Summit is accepting participant and mentor applications through September 30th, 2019, here. Organizations backing the women's summit include platinum sponsor Citadel & Citadel Securities – as well as supporting sponsors: EY, Marshall Wace, MarketAxess, and Point72.

Maternova Receives Prestigious Global Katerva Award for Commercialization of Innovations in Maternal and Newborn Health

During the 74th United Nations General Assembly, Maternova (maternova.net)—a global women's health solutions company— is announcing its win in the Gender Equality category of the international Katerva Awards for Sustainability. The Katerva Awards are the pinnacle of global sustainability recognition. Through them, the best ideas on the planet are identified, refined and accelerated toward impact at a global level.

https://jessicapressreleases.blogspot.com/2018/05/1-800-petmeds-announces-return-of.html

Maternova Inc. developed the first trusted commercial platform for innovations in obstetrics, reproductive health, child and neonatal health. The company began with a single product offering and expanded to 40 innovations to save women and newborns—to date, impacting over 500,000 lives. Read this here.

Each time a hemorrhage, infection or severe eclampsia is prevented, a mother lives to see her newest child, and her other children grow to adulthood. And that mother contributes economically to her household, her community and her country. Each Maternova innovation is rigorously tested for its potential to change the odds for mother and for their families.

Maternova's initial business model has expanded to include proprietary products, like Novaveil, a revolutionary textile to repel insects in malaria-endemic countries around the world, and a suite of licensed intellectual property.

The women-founded, woman-owned company's CEO, Prakash Veenam, states that, "Too often life-saving innovations do not reach scale because they lack a long-term champion, a commercialization platform and a market-based mechanism for reaching the last mile. To Maternova, marketing and distribution of medical devices and diagnostics are in our DNA—we see tremendous human need and a large market opportunity." Be alert to read related news.

Dr. Bettina von Stamm, Director of the Katerva Awards writes, "It is initiatives like (Maternova) that I love: helping accelerate great solutions we already have and making them available where they are needed while also developing solutions where gaps exist; working through partnerships rather than wanting to do it all alone, while investing in people, research and education."

The Katerva Awards receive thousands of nominations each year, sourced by a global network of 'spotters.' The Selection Committee vets the submissions, ultimately choosing a category award winner. More than 400 specialists in specific subjects areas carry out the rigorous 10-month-long adjudication process to evaluate the practical, strategic, scientific, social and commercial value of the endeavors. The implications the projects have for policy are also closely considered.

Dr. M A Apple, CEO & President Emeritus of the Council of Scientific Society Presidents states the Selection Committee's rationale for awarding this honor to Maternova, saying, "Investment in women's health has been inadequate and insufficient for decades. Maternova accelerates access to life-saving innovation by educating, marketing, distributing and evaluating...It is an honor to join the worldwide acclamation of Maternova's growing potential to uplift the world."

UNICEF estimates 2.8 million pregnant women and newborns die every year, or 1 every 11 seconds, mostly of preventable causes.

"Why is all of this important to me?" continued Katerva Awards' Director, Dr. von Stamm, "If we ever want to move closer towards sustainability we need more initiatives that are driven by an overarching goal that is focused on the greater good, not initiatives that are driven by ego, greed or the desire to control."

Maternova Inc. is honored to have their decade of work and impact recognized in this prestigious award. The focus remains on accelerating access to affordable, proven technologies that save women and children.

The 20/22 Act Society Announces Disaster Relief Support to Bahamas

In the beginning of September, the 20/22 Act Society's Foundation took a step towards relieving the terrible situation brought by Hurricane Dorian to The Bahamas. In doing so, the 20/22 Act Foundation chose to support two critical areas that were severely affected by the Hurricane: humanitarian relief and animal welfare.

Donna Kiriaze, accountant at the Bahamas Humane Society, said, "I can't begin to tell you how grateful we are for your support. It will help us tremendously to face the challenges ahead. A huge thank you for your support at this devastating time for the Bahamian people and animals." The 20/22 Act Foundation granted $25,000 to Grand Bahama's primary animal sanctuary to help their animal transfer and sanitization efforts. Dogs and cats are being transferred to Nassau, Bahamas, where the hurricane's impact was not as severe as in Grand Bahama. At least 150 pets have also been shipped and made available for adoption in animal sanctuaries in Florida, United States.

Furthermore, Erin Gore, Vice President of Development at World Central Kitchen, said, "we are incredibly grateful for you. Just yesterday we passed the 100,000 meals served milestone. We have a long way to go to meet the need and you are now in this with us," in response to the 20/22 Act Foundation's $25,000 grant for hot food, water, and supplies provided directly to the Bahamian people affected. News reports say that World Central Kitchen continues to lead a massive effort of unloading and serving at least 500,000 pounds of nutritious meals, sandwiches, and drinking water to tens of thousands of people daily.

"Our thoughts are with the Bahamian people and animals in this terrible situation. We imagine how dire the situation out there can be from our experience in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria," said Robb Rill, President of the 20/22 Act Foundation. "We really hope our support makes a difference and, again, appreciate the efforts of Bahamian charities in getting this done."

UN Foundation Announces New Framework for Corporate Action on Workplace Women’s Health and Empowerment

The United Nations Foundation, together with the UN Global Compact and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), today released a first-of-its-kind comprehensive guideline for private sector companies to take action on women's health and empowerment in their global supply chain workforces. The Framework for Corporate Action on Workplace Women's Health and Empowerment provides a holistic approach and outlines concrete actions for companies to embed women's health and empowerment in their policies, systems, and operations. Read related news now.

The Framework positions women's health as central to empowerment, economic development, and decent work. For the nearly 200 million women working in global supply chains to thrive and advance in the workplace, they need access to essential health care services from quality reproductive care to cancer screenings to protection from gender-based violence. Companies are taking note, especially those that employ largely female workforces. In industries like garment manufacturing, coffee, tea, cocoa, and flower farming, and hospitality, in which women comprise 50 to 80 percent of the workforce, companies are investing in workplace women's health and empowerment, recognizing that what is good for women workers also generates business returns through a healthier, more productive workforce.

"This is part of a growing movement by the private sector to move beyond compliance to drive real, systematic change for workers, communities, and the world," said Robyn Russell, Director of Programs and Innovation at the United Nations Foundation's Universal Access Project. "Investing in the health and well-being of women workers is the right thing to do and the smart thing to do, and this framework lays out for companies how to get started or go further to make women's health and empowerment a priority in their global supply chain workforces."

The framework is based on learnings from consultations with programs, companies, and non-governmental organizations to compile the best practices for investing in workplace women's health and empowerment. It outlines specific actions, rationale, and resources for both buyers and suppliers in a four-step process that includes understanding workers' needs and operational gaps, setting priorities and targets, taking action on education and services for women's health and empowerment, and measuring, improving, and communicating around the initiative. The framework also cites specific programs and examples for each phase of action, and outlines innovative funding models to turn concepts into reality in a way that is effective and sustainable.
