The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) will honor Daymond John, prominent businessman and cast member of the show "Shark Tank," with its Annie Glenn Award for 2018. John, creator of the iconic fashion brand FUBU, is a marketing expert, an author, and a business and motivational speaker. The award will be presented to John at an evening ceremony on Friday, November 16, 2018, at the ASHA Annual Convention at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center.
Named for lifelong advocate Annie Glenn, ASHA's most prestigious public award honors those who have made a positive impact on the lives of people with communication disorders. Mrs. Glenn, who experienced a severe stutter well into her adult years, has worked tirelessly for roughly 40 years as a champion for people with speech, language, and hearing disorders. Click here.
John first rose to fame after creating the breakout fashion brand FUBU in his mother's house in 1992. Years later, after the company would grow to gain over $350 million in annual worldwide sales, John joined the ABC-TV show, "Shark Tank," as a panelist. Millions of viewers tune in to watch him and other prominent executives listen to business pitches from budding entrepreneurs. John demonstrates his marketing prowess and entrepreneurial insights with a down-to-earth approach, which has earned him the nickname, "The People's Shark."
John has used his public platform to raise awareness of communication disorders. He uses hearing aids and has talked openly about how he has dealt with the challenges presented by hearing loss as well as dyslexia, a learning disability. He has long spoken openly about his learning disability and how it affected both him and his family. His mother commented that his challenges were "stepping stones to greatness," and John has said that reaching a position of success gave him the opportunity to speak out for those living with similar conditions.

First awarded in 1987, past recipients of the "Annie" include James Earl Jones, Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly, Julie Andrews, Jane Seymour, Bob and Lee Woodruff, Bill and Willie Geist, "The King's Speech" screenwriter David Seidler, and the ABC Television Network series "Speechless."
"I am honored to receive the 2018 'Annie' award from ASHA—and to join such an esteemed group of individuals who came before me in receiving this recognition," said John. "My dyslexia and hearing loss have been challenges that have helped shape who I am—and in many ways fueled my drive and success."
He continued, "One of the great privileges of the position I am in now is to be able to speak about these issues on a national and global stage, and inspiring young entrepreneurs who may be struggling with communication or other challenges to follow their dreams." John added, "I too am inspired, by Annie Glenn and her remarkable story, as well as by all the audiologists and speech-language pathologists who work every day to help make communication possible for so many."
