Republic Ranches Lists 40,000+ acre Monarch Ranch in West Texas

Republic Ranches, an elite farm, ranch and rural properties brokerage firm serving Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico, Louisiana and Arkansas, is offering the Monarch Ranch, a sprawling West Texas ranch of 40,138 acres in Val Verde County. Home to Texas' largest volume cave, with over five miles of Devils River flowing throughout and the remains of the historic Fort Hudson, the ranch is prime property for adventure, hunting and fishing.

Fern Cave, located on the western portion of Monarch Ranch, is home to one of the world's largest remaining bat populations. Also known as Bat Cave, it is the nesting spot for the Mexican free-tailed bat, the dominant species in Fern Cave. The majority of Texas free-tailed bats migrate south into Mexico for winter, though extra-cool areas near entrances are used in winter by Western big-eared bats and Eastern pipistrelles and may be used by other species such as Peter's ghost-faced bat.

The spring fed Devils River is considered some of the cleanest water in Texas. Indigenous people, Spanish explorers, ranchers, military outposts, Texas Rangers and outlaws have called this basin home for thousands of years. Monarch Ranch is located 30 miles upstream from Lake Amistad and with pristine waters running the Devils River, outdoorsmen find the ranch ideal for hunting and fishing. Read this here.

"Monarch Ranch is an outdoorsman's dream. Fantastic hunting opportunities for a huge variety of game exist during the winter, as multiple ecosystems converge on the ranch," Republic Ranches Partner Jeff Boswell said. "You can hunt bobwhite quail behind dogs in the upper grasslands, hunt mallards in the river bottom, white-tailed deer in the canyons and chase aoudad sheep through the mountains. I do not know of many places where that is even remotely possible. Read related news now.

"Floating along the Devils River with crystal clear water and the feeling you are alone on the planet is almost magical; hat such a river can exist in the Chihuahuan Desert in West Texas is almost inconceivable and yet there you are" Boswell added. "The fishing on the ranch is truly unique with an exceptional small mouth bass population that thrives in the river because it is spring fed and stays cool all summer. This ranch can and should be used year-round with both excellent hunting and fishing available across all seasons." Read all the latest news.

Monarch Ranch is full of historical adventure dating back to John Coffee Hays, the first American to visit Val Verde County in 1848 to establish a road from San Antonio to El Paso. Also known as Camp Hudson, a fort named for Lieutenant Walter W. Hudson, who died in action in April 1850 at the hands of Native Americans. A post office was built on Fort Hudson the same year it was established in 1857. Although troops were pulled from the post when the Civil War began, the post office continued to operate, serving military troops and area settlers until 1866. Soldiers occupied the post again in 1867 and were tasked with protecting travelers and newly arrived settlers. By January 1877, the threat of attacks by Native Americans was over and the post was abandoned. The remains of Fort Hudson are still found on the ranch today, in addition to a small gravesite. The fort was recognized with a centennial marker by the Texas Historical Commission in 1936.

Access to the property is convenient, with an airport on the west side of the ranch, including a paved 6,000 foot runway, large hangar and fuel tanks. Access across the ranch is highly improved with the addition of over 13 miles of paved roads, and a very rare private bridge over the Devils River.
