West Virginia ranks No. 1 for number of cigarette smokers and No. 2 for smoking-related deaths, with 21.7% being smokers and 0.085% of the population dying due to smoking-related cancer.
Kentucky ranks No. 2 for traditional cigarette smoking and No. 1 by far for smoking-related cancers, with 21.1% being smokers and 0.234% of the population dying due to smoking-related cancer.

This correlation is also borne out on the opposite end of the spectrum: Utah has the lowest percentage of deaths due to smoking-related cancers, and it also has the second-lowest percentage of cigarette smokers in the country.
This analysis was conducted using data from the U.S. Census, JAMA Internal Medicine, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). See Breazy's full report here: https://breazy.com/blogs/education/study-smokers-and-smoking-related-cancer-deaths-by-state.
