First Chicago Insurance Company Joins National Safety Council Driving Initiative

"Every day, at least nine Americans die and 100 are injured in distracted driving crashes is a statistic no one should ignore," began Mike Kaper, Chief Operating Officer, First Chicago Insurance Company. "As an auto insurance provider, stressing the importance of safe driving is fundamental. The more safe driving principles are emphasized, the more each of us will begin to become aware of our own actions and hopefully embrace the messages behind safe driving. Just one second of not paying attention is all it takes to change a life forever." Be alert to the latest news.

The National Safety Council has dedicated the months of April, May and June to promoting safe driving principles. In support of this safe driver initiative, FCIC provides the following tips to promote safe driving.

Tip #1 No cell phone use or texting while driving; no exceptions
Cell phones, dashboard touchscreens, voice commands and other in-vehicle technologies pose a threat to our safety. It's a fact technology, which helps drivers to multitask, is about convenience not safety. According to the National Safety Council, more than 3,000 people in the United States are killed each year in distracted driving accidents. (1) Cell phones are the number one driving distraction. Drivers tend to use cell phones for long periods of time while driving. Many states ban handheld cell phone usage altogether driving. A citation can be issued in states where bans exist.

Kaper remarked, "Vision is the most important sense for safe driving. Yet, drivers using hand held phones, as well as hands-free phones have a tendency to look at but not actually focus on the objects around them. FCIC is committed to the elimination of preventable accidents by raising awareness of the potential dangers of any type of cell phone usage when behind the wheel."

Research indicates that drivers using handheld and hand-free cell phones only see about 50% of all that occurs in their driving environment. This phenomenon is called "inattention blindness" and can lead to drivers missing items such as stop signs and even pedestrians.

Tip #2 Install cell phone blocking apps
FCIC encourages drivers to consider installing cell phone blocking apps and devices to help them stay focused when driving. These apps can prevent drivers from making or accepting calls, texting or accessing the Internet while the vehicle is in motion. This technology can be effective for parents of teen drivers and even employers.

Tip #3 Promote safety practices for teen drivers
May has been designated as Youth Traffic Safety month. This campaign gets under way each year during a high-risk time for young drivers such as prom, graduation, and increased summer driving. The National Safety Council reports that 50% of teen drivers will be involved in a traffic accident before graduating high school. (2) However, parents can help decrease the chances of their teen being involved in an accident by practicing with their young driver, stressing safety and demonstrating the importance of no talking or texting while driving.

Teens are often involved in an accident because they are inexperienced drivers. They struggle with night driving, judging gaps in traffic, and driving the right speeds for conditions. In addition, peers, music and other outside stimuli easily distract teens. It is important for parents to continue to teach their young drivers beyond the time they get their drivers license. Of equal importance is strict enforcement of a no drinking and driving precedent.

Kaper concluded, "Implementing a strict rule of no talking or texting while driving starts by first adhering to the policy yourself. It is not easy, but really is a lifesaving decision. The biggest misconception is that it is unsafe for others to talk on the phone or text while driving, but it is ok for me. That mindset has to change."

This showcase camp differs from most in that each camper will receive individual instruction from each college coach in small station groups during camp. The showcase program focuses on advanced skills, position play, team concepts, and an overall intense level of competition. As Couples Delay Parenthood, Father’s Age Poses Risks for Mothers and Babies

A recent study published in The BMJ shows advanced paternal age to be associated with an increased risk of premature birth and low birth weight. After considering the effects of maternal age, infants born to fathers aged 45 or older had 14% higher odds of premature birth and 18% higher odds of seizure than infants of fathers aged 25 to 34 years. The odds of gestational diabetes were 34% higher in mothers with the oldest partners.[1] Dr. Mark P. Trolice, Director of Fertility CARE: The IVF Center, emphasizes the need for men, as well as women, to consider their age and overall health in making family planning decisions.

The significance of this issue is heightened by an ongoing pattern of delay in Americans' beginning to have children: the percentage of births to fathers aged 40 or older in the United States has doubled since the 1970s, and as of 2015 accounted for nine percent of births.[2] The risks associated with older fathers go beyond those obvious at birth; earlier studies by the lead author of the new BMJ study linked paternal aging to an increased risk of babies born with congenital diseases like dwarfism (abnormally low height), or developing psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, or developmental ones like autism. Other studies found elevated risk of childhood leukemia, breast cancer, and prostate cancer among offspring of older fathers.[3]

Meanwhile, infertility is still widely perceived as an almost exclusively female issue, despite reports such as that in 2017 from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School in Boston, showing that sperm quality markedly declines with age, making it harder to sire children.4 Nor is this issue confined to the United States; in Great Britain, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority's 2014-2016 report showed male infertility to be the most common reason (37%) for British couples seeking IVF.[4]

"Conventional wisdom holds that men don't have a 'biological clock,'" explains Dr. Trolice, "but recent research implies otherwise, especially where the health of the child is concerned. At birth, women possess all the eggs they're ever going to carry. Men, however, continue to produce sperm from puberty well into middle age and beyond, creating a more gradual impact on a man's fertility."

He notes that Fertility CARE: The IVF Center treats the couple as a whole, focusing on men's reproductive issues with the same approach and eye on medical breakthroughs as it applies to women's reproductive issues. The Young Latina Day event began when it was first proclaimed by the City of Aurora in 2017. In 2018, in addition to Aurora, West Chicago and Berwyn also participated. It was also in 2018 that through the Latino affairs from the office of the Governor, former Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner presented a certificate of excellence to honor and recognize the foundation's work in the Hispanic community. This year's schedule of Chicago and six suburbs displays the growing support to help Latinas in their life goals.

"The fact that this year we have seven cities participating shows the importance of supporting young Latinas as they grow to be leaders and role models to their families, communities and businesses," Camacho-Ruiz said.

The event has already made an impact on participants such as Crystal Monarrez, a senior at Batavia High School who will be entering Brigham Young University this fall. Monarrez entered the foundation's mentoring program and graduated from it.

"Participating in Young Latina Day makes me feel grateful that people are aware of the beauty and culture that comes from being Latina," she said. "As young Latinas, we are recognizing where we come from. We are celebrating our blood heritage, our roots, our families, our traditions and our way of life."

Before joining Mainstream, he was with Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield for two years as a Lead Systems Analyst Programmer. Prior to that, Rob served the Arkansas Supreme Court for seven years as Senior Software Engineer and another eight years with Acxiom as a software developer. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Information Systems from Arkansas State University.

He and his wife, Stephanie, live in Sherwood. When he's not slinging code, Rob spends time with his wife, his music, his motorcycle and going to the beach.

Retail Gift Card Association Opens Registration for 2019 RGCA Forum

The Retail Gift Card Association (RGCA), the only nonprofit trade organization representing the closed-loop gift card industry, announced today that registration is open for its annual RGCA Forum this September 30 through October 2, 2019, in Phoenix, Arizona. Early bird rates are available through June 30.

Gift card industry professionals with an equitable interest in the closed-loop ecosystem are encouraged to attend the RGCA Forum. The event attracts retailers, gift card program managers, technology companies that leverage gift cards, manufacturers, distributors, processors, secondary exchange sites and third-party resellers. Two New Hires Accelerate T2 Tech Group’s Versatility and Agility

Jonathan Aparicio joins the T2 Tech engineering team and brings demonstrated expertise in IT infrastructure assessment, configuration, installation and implementation of hardware and software. How Pet Lovers Can ‘Pay It Forward’ To Help Homeless Dogs and Cats

When Marina Barton walked into the Best Friends Lifesaving Center in Mission Hills last July, she knew she wanted to open her heart and her home to two adult cats.

Since there weren't any bonded pairs, Barton fell in love with Barclay and Chance, two tabby bachelor boys, and hoped they'd eventually form the classic bromance.

Almost a year later, the two are best buddies who snuggle, play, and thoroughly enchant their mom. "It felt like a big risk that Barclay and Chance would get along, but they're inseparable now," Barton said.

What she didn't know that fateful day was that someone had paid for Barclay and Chance's adoption fees through Best Friends' Pay It Forward campaign. Upon hearing the news that her adoptions were free, Barton immediately opted to Pay It Forward herself. Click here to read the latest news.
