They came, they saw and they were inspired.
More than one hundred animal lovers and local officials, including Jupiter Mayor Todd Wodroska, turned out for a recent ribbon cutting and open house at North American Veterinary Heart Center.
"Being here and being able to offer these options to pet owners is a dream come true," said Dr. Augusta Pelosi, the Heart Center's medical director and co-founder. "We are very unique in that our focus is on cardiology and surgery."
The North American Veterinary Heart Center is one of the few specialty clinics of its kind in the world.
And it draws its inspiration from a Shih Tzu named Bella who succumbed to congestive heart failure before her humans could find a specialist to treat her.
"As we wiped away our tears, we saw an opportunity to create something meaningful in the aftermath of Bella's death," said Giovanni Di Stadio, one of Bella's two humans and co-founder of the Heart Center. "I knew I had to do something."
That something was ensuring that other animal companions would not have to suffer while waiting for life-saving cardiac care.
Mr. Di Stadio's research for Bella's care led him to Dr. Pelosi, the world's only double board-certified specialist in veterinary cardiology and veterinary surgery with a specialization in cardiac surgery. Continue reading.
"We talked on the phone for hours about our common goal, our vision, our strong desire to help these little creatures in a way that has not been completely explored before," Dr. Pelosi said. "It felt like our words were flowing in unison throughout our conversation, as we realized we shared a passion and vision for transforming veterinary cardiac healthcare."

Together, they have created a state-of-the-art Heart Center that provides advanced surgical care (heart surgery), management of cardiac patients (cardiology) and world-class leading treatments with a goal of providing heart patients longer lives.
Mr. Di Stadio, who serves the Heart Center as president and CEO, said he and Dr. Pelosi wanted to take veterinary cardiology and heart surgery to the next level.

About Dr. Pelosi: The world's only dual board-certified veterinary specialist in Veterinary Cardiology and Surgery, Dr. Augusta Pelosi was born and raised in Italy. Dr. Pelosi attended the College of Veterinary Medicine at Universitá di Pisa and the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (Erasmus program) and earned her DVM degree from the Universitá di Pisa.
Upon moving to the United States in 2001, she has obtained the ECFVG certification.
