Consumers Aren’t Adequately Prepared for a Natural Disaster, Mercury Insurance Finds

Despite the frequency of wildfires, hurricanes, tornadoes and other natural disasters ravaging the U.S., a recent survey conducted by Mercury Insurance (NYSE: MCY) revealed that fewer than half (45%) of the respondents are prepared if one happens where they live.

"It's a bit alarming to discover that, although natural disasters are in the news on a seemingly regular basis, many Americans still aren't properly preparing themselves if one happens in their neighborhood or city," said Christopher O'Rourke, vice president of property claims at Mercury Insurance. "These events can have serious repercussions and adopting a wait-and-see attitude should not be an option."

Mercury surveyed nearly 2,000 respondents to gauge their level of preparedness, including if they have created and practice an evacuation plan, have adequate insurance coverage if their property were to be damaged or destroyed in a disaster, keep an inventory of their belongings in case they need to be replaced, and keep a stocked emergency kit. Seventy-seven percent of the quiz-takers either don't have a plan or don't regularly practice it if they do. Additionally, 39% are unsure if they have enough insurance to rebuild if their home is damaged or destroyed by a natural disaster, 34% don't have a home inventory, and 13% didn't realize their insurance policy covers their personal belongings. The vast majority (88%) of respondents, however, do have an emergency kit in their home.

Only 9% of respondents rated as "extremely prepared" after completing the nine-question quiz.

Former Teacher's AI-driven reading app is granted US Patent

There is no shortage of learning apps available for school-aged children. Few, however, are developed by women founders. Even fewer include features so revolutionary they qualify for U.S. patent protection.
Read Ahead is among the rare few.

Be alert to the latest news.:

https://jessicapressreleases.blogspot.com/2018/05/rescale-and-remcom-bring-nvidia-gpu.html

Read Ahead is an AI-driven application that, in minutes, takes any piece of digital text and turns it into a fully customized, interactive reading assignment that can be completed on digital device—be it a smartphone, tablet or laptop. Read related news now.

Founder, Dr. Roxanne Russell, and her team have been granted a U.S. patent that protects the app's unique features which include: Click here.

A black and white text player that improves concentration and focus for users.

An artificial intelligence that skims key ideas and chunks reading assignments into manageable pieces to boost critical thinking.

Interactivity that allows users to play with the flow of words and engage directly with the text to demonstrate comprehension.

Developed by Russell, an Instructional Designer with over 20 years of experience in higher learning, and a parent of two herself, Read Ahead takes the biggest thing that distracts kids from after school reading—their penchant for digital devices—and turns it into the opposite: a simple way to get kids reading (and loving it, too).

While Read Ahead is new to the consumer market, the app has been in testing and development for several years. Research conducted using Read Ahead has been recognized and cited in dozens of publications and today, thousands of teachers are using Read Ahead in the classroom with promising results. "While co-directing the U. S. Department of Education's National Reading Research Center from 1992-1997 and since then while serving as editor of Reading Research Quarterly, I have evaluated and observed the development and implementation of many reading programs. Never, however, have I found a program that equals Read Ahead in terms of its flexibility, accessibility, and integration of content delivery methods," says Donna Alvermann, UGA Appointed Distinguished Research Professor of Language & Literacy Education.

With Read Ahead, kids are encouraged and supported to read what they want on the media that they prefer and they're able to do so distraction-free through the app's patented black and white text reader. Even better, Read Ahead's functionality helps readers expand their vocabulary and critical thinking in a way that traditional classroom reading assignments don't.

Read Ahead is currently offered free for educators in the U.S. through Clever.com and available to consumers for just $36 per year at https://readahead.ai. Be alert to read related news.

Galactic Mathematics Helps States Title Disrupt 143-Year Old Industry

States Title Holding, Inc., one of the top ten largest real estate settlement service companies in the United States, was issued a patent for "Predictive Machine Learning Models" by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on December 17, 2019. The company can now find the "sweet spot" for automated title processing in its first-of-its-kind title insurance algorithm. Be alert to read related news.

The patent for invention number 10,510,009 allows States Title to optimize the value-maximizing point in the instant underwriting model by modifying the previously well-known Markov Chain Monte Carlo technique with unique title-specific mathematical components. The company's Chief Data Scientist, Andy Mahdavi, a Fulbright Scholar who earned his PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics from Harvard University, previously applied the Markov technique to study dark matter using galaxy cluster data from NASA satellites.

"During the first half of my career, I was an astrophysicist, working on unraveling the nature of dark matter, a substance that makes up 85 percent of the cosmos and yet is totally invisible and extremely difficult, if not impossible, to detect in a lab. To do this, I leveraged a statistical technique called Markov Chain Monte Carlo, which optimizes theoretical models until they match the data, providing the most suitable match. When I arrived at States Title, I adapted this technique to work on title insurance risk, optimizing our machine learning algorithm to produce maximal value while enabling the best customer experience. It turns out, if you're just optimizing a number, it doesn't matter if it's galactic dark matter or dollars of revenue and loss."

– Andy Mahdavi, Chief Data Science Officer, States Title Holding, Inc.

This new patent complements the patent awarded to States Title in April 2019, which protects the company's use of data science to create predictive title insurance by assigning a risk score to indicate how safe a property is in terms of potential liens or other liabilities that may cloud a property's title. The second patent protects States Title's unique application of the Markov technique to turn this risk score into a profit/loss number.

Mahdavi joined the company from Capital One, where he applied the scientific rigor of almost two decades in academia to develop hyper real-time fraud protection. He is emblematic of how States Title attracts experts from a variety of fields to disrupt an industry that has looked the same for more than 100 years.

"Anyone who has bought or refinanced a property has experienced the friction and frustration inherent to the traditional title and escrow process. Our team brings academic and industrial expertise from astrophysics, data science, machine intelligence, supply chain management, operations research and engineering disciplines together in a concerted effort to reimagine the residential mortgage industry."

About States Title Holding, Inc. and States Title

Founded in 2016 in San Francisco, States Title Holding, Inc. has grown rapidly to become one of the top ten largest title and escrow companies in the US. The States Title family of companies – States Title, North American Title Company (NATC) and North American Title Insurance Company (NATIC) – is able to impact 90% of all real estate transactions in the US. States Title's first-of-its-kind, patented technology solution utilizes machine intelligence to make residential real estate closings vastly more simple and efficient.
