Innovators Encouraged to Share Advancements in Cybersecurity Education

Cybersecurity educators and innovators are invited to submit their effective practices to the National CyberWatch Center's fourth annual Innovations in Cybersecurity Education Awards and Recognition program. Submissions are now being accepted.

"As technology and threat actors continue to advance, the demand grows for cybersecurity educators to keep up with the trends while preparing their students for the workforce," said Casey O'Brien, Executive Director of the National CyberWatch Center. "National CyberWatch wants to recognize the innovative ways educators are expanding their classrooms to invigorate and engage their students."

Selected submissions will be showcased in the Innovations in Cybersecurity Education publication, which accelerates the adoption of new ideas throughout the academic community. The selected submissions will receive national recognition in news releases, newsletters and social media campaigns, in addition to earning a digital badge.

Last year, National CyberWatch Center received over 70 submissions. The five winning submissions were: Pathway to Advancement in Cybersecurity Education; Thinking Outside the Box: Using Escape Room Games to Interest Teachers and Students in Cybersecurity; Incentive-Based Platform for Teaching Cryptocurrency, Bug Bounty, Reconnaissance and More; and Three Colleges + Three Degrees = One Successful Cyber Career. An honorable mention also was awarded to a submission around PCI Credit Card Security.

"My hope is that the curated submissions and subsequent dissemination of the various innovations in cybersecurity education and workforce development will accelerate the adaptation and adoption of new ideas throughout the academic community, while at the same time, recognizing individuals and organizations for their work," said Casey.

Award winners will be acknowledged at the Community College Cyber Summit at Sinclair Community College in Dayton OH Aug. 4-6, 2020. Submissions should be currently in use or have been used in cybersecurity education, and will be accepted through Jan. 15, 2020. For more information, visit nationalcyberwatch.org/innovations/.

In 2019, the client development team she designed and launched in 2018 proved their worth by successfully expanding and retaining 100 percent of the programs, and she led the strategic sales efforts for AGS' global procurement solutions team and helped launch its latest service offerings. Boyse looks forward to putting AGS on the map as the leading procurement solutions delivery organization in 2020.

Amy Mallia
As one of Allegis Global Solutions' (AGS) most prominent female leaders, Amy Mallia believes in empowering and promoting women throughout the organization. Mallia facilitates the annual strategic planning process and deployment of the strategy across the organization. Additionally, Mallia owns change management and corporate social responsibility at AGS, where the team exceeded a goal of 7,500 volunteer hours in 2019 globally.

"The women named to this year's Global Power 150 list play an important role in bringing value to the workforce solutions ecosystem, elevating not only the bottom line for their organizations but lifting up their teams through a passionate focus on employee development and creation of positive and inclusive cultures in which talent thrives," Subadhra Sriram, editor and publisher, media products, at SIA, said.

Light Up To Live Foundation Gifts $35,000 to Fund Patriotic Service Dog and Donates 3rd Dog for 2020 Training

A gift of $35,000 is being made this week to the Patriotic Service Dog Foundation (PSDF) of Murietta, CA from the Light Up To Live Foundation (LUTLF) to fund a highly trained service dog for a military Veteran handler who passes a rigorous needs application process. Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress (PTS), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Pain or Depression are the top priority. The dog is a yellow Labrador named Lincoln.

Randall Reed, president and founder of the Light Up To Live Foundation, made the announcement with the LUTLF Board of Directors, and thanked supporters who helped raise the monies at their fundraising events held In September. "My wife Sherry and I could not be more proud of what this Foundation is doing to support the U.S. Military Veteran community in large and small ways – touching individual Veterans with the help they need to get back to their best selves after traumatic experiences."

Tom Tackett, founder of the Patriotic Service Dog Foundation, said his work with canines is incredibly rewarding as well as challenging. "It's our mission to find the ideal dog, for the ideal Veteran candidate, and make a lifelong match that will help that Veteran operate in as close to a normal lifestyle as possible." Tackett says he and his team train the specially selected service dogs for up to 18 months. When a match is made with a Veteran, that new "handler" trains for another two months to ensure the match is a good one. The dog is provided at no charge and the gift includes five years of dog food and veterinary care. Tackett is hoping to place Lincoln in the next several months with his new Veteran handler.

At this year's Light Up To Live Gala, Tackett brought Veteran Michelle Rivera and her new service dog Gentle Ben to meet the foundation's supporters. Rivera, who suffered for years with severe PTS, found the perfect match with the handsome German Sheperd who is named in memory of U.S. Army Sgt. Ben Adams. She said Gentle Ben has given her the courage and confidence to move back into society and to her normal activities and work, whereas before, she had isolated herself at home. (Click to watch video and learn more). A third dog donated by the Reeds at the same time as Gentle Ben is nearing his placement with a new handler. The curly-haired Labradoodle is named Jackel in memory of U.S. Army Sgt. Stephen Jackel. An announcement on this placement will be made at a later date.

Reed also announced that he and Sherry have donated a chocolate-colored Labrador puppy named Star who is in training now at PSDF and will be the recipient of funding at the 2020 LUTLF fundraising events.

GlucoMe and Merck to Present Digital Diabetes Management Outcomes at the Upcoming IDF Congress 2019 in South Korea

GlucoMe, the creators of an innovative digital diabetes platform, announced today that they will present the results of their digital diabetes management project at the International Diabetes Federation's upcoming Congress in December 2019 in South Korea. The study, which was conducted in collaboration with Merck, highlights the added value of GlucoMe's diabetes solution which helped patients reduce their HbA1c levels in only 12 weeks.

The study to be presented – titled Digital diabetes care system – observations and insights from a market acceptance evaluation pilot in Vietnam, aimed to assess the clinical outcomes of patients using the GlucoMe digital solution in a Southeast Asian country.

GlucoMe's CEO, Yiftah Ben-Aharon, commented, "GlucoMe partnered with Merck and together worked closely with several endocrinology clinics and hospitals in Vietnam. The clinics were provided with the GlucoMe app and blood glucose meter and instructed their patients on how to use the system. Data were collected and analyzed centrally."

"Overall, the pilot was a great success as patients and clinics were able to communicate on a more frequent basis, leading to improved clinical results. Developing countries have a large market potential yet present unique challenges. This pilot study demonstrates that GlucoMe is a viable model for rapid implementation and roll out to additional countries in other emerging markets."

Dr. Avivit Cahn, of the Diabetes Unit at Hadassah Hebrew University Hospital in Israel, and of one of the co-authors of the study, said, "Adherence to glucose measurements was markedly high with the assistance of GlucoMe's digital solution, leading to an overall reduction in the average blood glucose levels by 19.5 mg/dl by the end of the study. Moreover, high retention rates of 81% and multiple digital touchpoints between the patients and the health care professionals, led to much satisfaction on both ends with over 95% of the physicians and patients stating they would strongly support the broad usage of the GlucoMe platform."

GlucoMe is a digital diabetes management solution that effectively and efficiently streamlines the disease management process for patients and the entire healthcare system, including health care providers, supporting medical teams, insurers, tele-medicine, and remote care providers.

Using its Digital Diabetes Clinic (DDC) along with the Control Tower (CT), GlucoMe assists medical teams in identifying and prioritizing urgent cases for more timely intervention while enabling a significant increase in patient interactions without the need to intensify resources and staff. Cities can unlock a combined $60 Billion by Hyperconnecting their Urban Ecosystems, according to new ESI ThoughtLab Study

Today, ESI ThoughtLab announced the key findings from its Building a Hyperconnected City program, a year-long global study of 100 cities using technology to improve, connect, and secure all areas of their ecosystem. The study, supported by a coalition of industry leaders, shows how cities can go beyond current smart solutions to become "hyperconnected" hubs generating large economic, social, and environmental benefits by linking key elements of their urban landscape—from transportation to public health and security, from government to business and residents. ESI ThoughtLab's economists estimate that, worldwide, cities could collectively enjoy a return on investment of as much as $60 billion if they were to become fully hyperconnected.

The findings were officially announced at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, Spain during a keynote speech by Lou Celi, CEO of ESI ThoughtLab. According to estimates by the reporting cities, the average return on investment on smart city initiatives ranges from 3 percent to 4 percent. As cities become more interlinked, their ROI grows. Returns in dollar terms can range from $19.6 million per city for hyperconnected beginners to $83 million per city for hyperconnected leaders. This is on top of sizable social, quality of life, and environmental benefits—such as reductions in crime, congestion, and pollution, as well as improvements in public health and living conditions.

Based on the research findings, ESI ThoughtLab recommends that cities striving to become hyperconnected urban centers follow a roadmap that includes these elements already being applied by leaders in our study:

A hyperconnected approach generates considerable returns in all areas of a city's ecosystem. For example, the research revealed that using technology to interlink different areas of public transit programs increases passenger satisfaction 38%, on-time arrival 33%, and transit ridership 29%. Digital public transit payment systems, used by 72% of cities surveyed, are particularly effective, with hyperconnected leaders recognizing a 6.5% ROI. Leaders also report a 4.9% return on real-time public transit apps, 4.8% on open loop payment systems, and 4.6% on mobility-as-a-service apps.

"The real value comes not just from using technology to link assets within urban areas, such as mobility, safety, energy, and sustainability, but also from connecting city stakeholders, including governments, citizens, businesses, and academia. When these are all aligned, cities can reap the greatest economic, business, and social rewards," said Celi.

To become hyperconnected, cities may also need to overcome a series of roadblocks. Uncertainty among citizens and other stakeholders who feel their health, privacy, or other interests will be compromised by new technologies is one of the thorniest. The study found that cities like Moscow, Barcelona, and Stockholm alleviate this through effective communication and outreach to build citizen trust and engagement. Funding for smart initiatives is yet another hurdle, but there are many possible solutions, both public and private, that leaders around the world have adopted. Cities must also overcome policy and regulatory barriers—such as those around procurement—to get where they are going. And they must pay close attention to cybersecurity, since the costs of not doing so can mount into the millions.

"Getting past these roadblocks may not be easy," said Celi. "But the journey to hyperconnectivity will provide tremendous dividends to all city stakeholders—from citizens rich and poor, to residents young and old, to workers skilled and unskilled, and to businesses large and small."

Far Out Toys Speeds into the Holiday Season with NASCAR Adventure Force Crash Racers

Far Out Toys launched the NASCAR Adventure Force Crash Racers Labor Day weekend at South Carolina's historic Darlington Raceway and last weekend kicked off the holidays during the NASCAR Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The NASCAR Adventure Force Crash Racers were successful right out of the gate, and with a major presence in Walmart stores across the U.S., they are poised to take the checkered flag this holiday season. Be alert to the latest news.

Available exclusively at Walmart, the NASCAR Adventure Force Crash Racers set was selected for Walmart's "Top Rated by Kids" toy list – the only sports licensed product on the list. In addition, the product was included in over 3,000 in-store Walmart demo days and the Walmart Toy Lab. And at Homestead-Miami Speedway last weekend, the new racing set was featured in a dedicated Adventure Force tent in the track's revived kid zone, which drew in thousands of kids along with celebrity NASCAR drivers.

"We were able to bring together amazing partners in NASCAR and Walmart and the result was powerful," said Keith Meggs, CEO, Far Out Toys. "The fact that this partnership has resulted in a product that engages children while achieving increasing sales is phenomenal."

The NASCAR community has rallied around the product -- Kyle Busch, Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver and owner of Kyle Busch Motorsports, posted a video that went viral with over 400,000 views; Noah Gragson, driver of JR Motorsports' No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro, filmed his own unboxings; and Natalie Decker, professional stock car racing driver and NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series driver, conducted an autograph signing for kids and adults during championship weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The product is also included in the NASCAR holiday gift guide.

NASCAR Adventure Force Crash Racers is the only toy kids can race, wreck and rebuild on an officially licensed NASCAR track. The track measures nearly 7-feet when assembled and combines motorized, high-speed racing with NASCAR race cars that break apart on impact. The vehicles easily snap back together for endless racing action.
"We've been impressed, but not surprised, with how kids have embraced NASCAR Adventure Force Crash Racers, and we look forward to continued collaboration with Far Out Toys to help foster lifelong fans through play," said Paul Sparrow, managing director, licensing and consumer products, NASCAR. "Far Out Toys has done an incredible job creating a product that incorporates the excitement of the sport in a fun and imaginative way."

NASCAR Adventure Force Crash Racers are available exclusively at Walmart stores and on Walmart.com.
