Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Forward, Charlotte Hornets is Hosting a Free Day Camp For Young People Who Stutter - Camp SAY Across the USA: Charlotte

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, a Camp SAY Ambassador, has stuttered since childhood and understands first-hand the serious issues that children with this speech disorder face at school and in everyday life. This day camp will be hosted in Charlotte, NC and is being offered free-of-charge. Parents are encouraged to attend camp to meet and mingle with other parents of children who stutter.  Parents can also join an educational group, led by an expert in working with young people who stutter. Stuttering is a common, yet widely misunderstood speech disorder that affects over 70 million people worldwide, including approximately 5% of all young children, many who continue to stutter into adulthood. Children who stutter often have significant difficulty in establishing friendships and experience discrimination, profound cruelty and bullying. Children who stutter may underperform in school by declining to participate in school activities, and avoid participation in class discussions – literally silencing themselves to avoid ridicule and shame. This cycle can deny children the opportunity to build educational and communication skills, compromising opportunities to attend college or pursue a desired career. SAY was founded in 2001, to help address these critical issues facing children who stutter. Camp SAY was established in 2008, and in 2018, Camp SAY Across the USA was launched with stops in several cities, including Irvine, CA; Houston, TX; and Memphis, TN.

The Stuttering Association for the Young is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that empowers, educates, and supports young people who stutter and the world that surrounds them. Christopher Paul Carey, as the new Director of Publishing, will work closely with Jim Sullos, President, and Cathy Wilbanks, Vice President of Operations, on all aspects of the company's publishing division, including exciting new initiatives to be announced in the future. Mr. Carey brings a wide breadth of experience in the publishing industry to the company. For the past decade, he has been integral to the success of Paizo, Inc., publisher of the bestselling Pathfinder and Starfinder roleplaying games, where he was Senior Editor and worked on the Pathfinder Tales and Planet Stories fiction imprints. Mr. Carey has edited the works of both classic and contemporary science fiction and fantasy authors, including more than 60 novels, anthologies, and collections for a variety of presses. He is the critically acclaimed author of five novels, a nonfiction collection, and numerous short stories and comic book scripts, including several authorized works set in the worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Mr. Carey holds a master's degree in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University.
