Nine UW-River Falls Students Recently Gifted with Aladtec Scholarships Help Bolster Software Firm’s Ongoing Campus Legacy

Nine UW-River Falls students pursuing careers in computer science and marketing communications were honored recently with $1,000 scholarships from Aladtec, Inc., a River Falls-based provider of scheduling and workforce management software to public service agencies across the U.S. and Canada.

The awards mark the fourth year that Aladtec has funded $6,000 worth of academic awards aimed at developing young talent in computer science and programming, with preference given to River Falls- and Hudson High School graduates. One award is given to an incoming freshman and sophomore, while two scholarships are offered to juniors and seniors.

In 2017, Aladtec added three additional $1,000 scholarships for students pursuing careers in marketing communications.

Nine Aladtec recipients for 2018, were recognized at a recent UW-River Falls Foundation event.
Computer Science honorees included: Sophie Langlois and Riley Swanson, of River Falls; Alex Pahl, Pine Island, Minn.; Brady Lange, Lewiston, Minn.; Zain Kaiser, Edina, Minn.; and Zach Kuznia, Lakeville, Minn.

Founded in 2003, Aladtec has employed dozens of UW-River Falls students and graduates through the years, including some who began work as summer interns and were subsequently hired to full-time positions as software engineers upon graduation. Several years ago, six UW-RF students spent their summer completing development testing on new Aladtec features. Some continued as part-time employees during the school year, and received Aladtec job offers upon graduation.

Aladtec owners Dave Feyereisen, Leo Langlois, and Chad Clay decided to fund the first scholarships in 2015 as a way of contributing to a region whose talent has helped fuel Aladtec's success.

Aladtec's current roster of 42 employees includes 19 UW-RF graduates -- six with Computer Science degrees -- along with another three people who are either now attending or completed a portion of their education at UW-RF. Several other UW-RF graduates gained experience at Aladtec before moving on to careers with Google, 3M, and other large firms.

Scholarship candidates must possess a minimum major GMA of 3.0 or higher and must be actively engaged in the computer science or marketing communications fields. U-River Falls Foundation staff select recipients annually with assistance from the University Scholarship Committee. Immediate family members of Aladtec owners are ineligible.

UW-River Falls began a tradition of recognizing scholarship donors and recipients with an annual recognition event. On Sunday, Oct. 28th, some 180 donors, students, campus staff gathered to meet and exchange stories.

Cheyenne Booth, a junior from Rice Lake, Wis., told attendees that receiving a scholarship made a significant impact on her life.

"Because I don't need to stress about paying for college, I am able to choose jobs and participate in class and campus opportunities that fill my soul instead of my bank account.

"On behalf of myself, and all the other recipients, thank you and know that we are continuing to acknowledge your generosity and are paying it forward, each in our own way," Booth said.

The University of Wisconsin-River Falls is a member of the University of Wisconsin System. More than 6,000 graduate and undergraduate students pursue degrees in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences; College of Arts and Sciences; College of Business and Economics; College of Education and Professional Studies; and the Office of Outreach and Continuing Education

Joe Cianciotto Takes Readers Back to 1980's on Facebook

Those who find everything about the late1980s and early 1990s to be their favorite era can now take a trip down memory lane with a new Facebook page homage by New Yorker Joe Cianciotto.

Cianciotto, who has been active on Facebook for years, has developed a large community of followers since creating a Facebook page dedicated to all things late 1980s and early 1990s -- which is when he says he peaked. To further engage his followers, as well as to attract new ones, he recently introduced a revival of the "Shriek of the Week" from the good old days of WDRE in New York at https://www.facebook.com/pg/Joseph.Cianciotto.Throwback/posts/?ref=page_internal. Continue reading.

As part of the new online segment, Facebook users can expect Cianciotto to share snippets about music and artists who have made a major impact on pop culture from this era. A new band or artist will be announced every Thursday. So far, the "Shriek of the Week" has received nothing but positive reviews and feedback from users.

A recent "Shriek of the Week" segment was dedicated to the B-52's "Roam," which went extremely mainstream in 1990. Cianciotto recalled spending a week listening to this song in Canada during his senior year of high school.

Cianciotto also spent another segment discussing "Kiss Them for Me" by Siouxsie and the Banshees, which debuted in 1991. According to Cianciotto, the band ended up headlining the very first Lollapalooza after this song became highly successful. Cianciotto explained that the moment he listened to and posted the song online as part of his segment was likely his first time hearing the song sober. Read related news here.

Cianciotto's ultimate goal with his Facebook page, and especially his new "Shriek of the Week" homage, is to take readers back to a time that was filled with iconic, one-of-a-kind music and artists. These artists were a major part of many people's upbringing, so Cianciotto's hope is that revisiting them will add a little joy to his readers' days both now and in the months and years ahead.

Cyan, Inc. Announces Eagre Games’ VR Adventure ZED, to Be Published Under New Cyan Ventures' Label

Cyan, Inc., the legendary indie studio that created best-selling classics Myst and Riven, today announced the formation of Cyan Ventures to help budding indie developers publish experimental and experiential narratives in VR.

"Having had the privilege to build compelling, immersive worlds for the past 30 years, I see VR as the natural, powerful evolution in storytelling. There's no doubt that virtual reality's ability to engage the user at an emotional and experiential level is fundamentally changing digital media," said Rand Miller, CEO, Cyan. We formed Cyan Ventures with the belief that now is the time to explore the new possibilities in VR storytelling. And what better way to start, than by teaming with our friend Chuck Carter, one of the amazing, world-building artists of Myst, to release ZED, a lovely, and deeply moving VR experience." Read this here.

"I'm thrilled to be working with Cyan on this very personal and heartfelt VR experience. Having worked with Rand many years ago on the original Myst, I was excited when he responded so enthusiastically to ZED,"said Chuck Carter, founder of Eagre Games. "With Cyan's support, we have a chance of bringing the wonder and passion of ZED to the minds and hearts of a much larger audience worldwide."

ZED is the story of an artist suffering from dementia -- desperately trying to reconnect fragmented memories. The player explores the dreams of the artist's crumbling mind in hopes of helping him assemble enough meaningful images to leave behind a loving memento and final legacy for his yet-unborn granddaughter. The experience blends adventure, a rich narrative, stirring sentiment, and fanciful world exploration.

ZED is the vision of Chuck Carter, developed in association with Skymap Games and co-written by Joe Fielder (Bioshock Infinite, The Flame and the Flood) and David Chen (Metal Gear Solid series, Narcosis). The game features compelling voice over work from an outstanding cast, including a riveting performance from veteran voice actor Stephen Russell (the Thief and Fallout series). Click here.

ZED is scheduled for release spring of 2019 and will be available for PC, Rift and Vive.

American IRA Discusses How to Understand UBTI in a Self-Directed IRA

The concepts of taxation within a Self-Directed IRA are fairly straight forward. They are consistent with any other similar type of retirement account. The Self-Directed aspect of these IRAs simply allows investors to choose the assets they like—so long as those assets are allowed by the IRS. But a recent post at American IRA recently dove deeper into tax considerations by explaining UBTI, or unrelated business taxable income.

Said the post: "Whenever a tax-exempt or pass-through entity, such as a Self-Directed IRA, owns a business or uses borrowed money, unrelated business taxable income, or UBTI, may come into play." This tax would then apply to the gains/profits realized during the tax year that may be attributable to the leverage in the investor's account. For example, this can apply to real estate investments.

If a Self-Directed IRA owned a business and used leverage to increase profits, it would then have to pay taxes on the income that come from this leverage.

The article notes that the Self-Directed 401(K) Plan does not leave the investor liable for this tax.

"These tax considerations can seem a little heavy at first," admits Jim Hitt, CEO of American IRA. "But the thing to remember is that these are not separate tax issues because of Self-Direction. In fact, these same taxes are applicable to anyone who has this kind of situation. These taxes cannot be avoided, which is why it is so important that investors know them and understand them. In the case of UBTI, it is especially important that investors understand how taxes might work with the use of leverage."

A Self-Directed IRA can be used as a way to lower overall tax burden, especially through tax deferral or paying taxes up-front, as in the case of a Self-Directed Roth IRA. But that does not mean that a Self-Directed IRA will knock out every tax.

For more information on UBTI, visit the post at American IRA's website: http://www.AmericanIRA.com. Interested parties can contact 866-7500-IRA.
