A Family that Reads Together, Rocks with Stories from the Golden Age at DragonCon

Galaxy Press celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Stories from the Golden Age at DragonCon 2018, one of America's largest pop-culture events. Hundreds of people visited the Galaxy Press booth, many repeat customers, to discover books written during the 1930s and '40s by American author L. Ron Hubbard—stories that are appropriate for readers of all ages. This included one local family whose daughters chose four science fiction and fantasy Golden Age stories while the parents opted for the Battlefield Earth audiobook.

"I have been attending Dragon Con since the early 1990s," stated John Goodwin President of Galaxy Press, "and I have seen it grow—considerably. What amazes me the most is its ability to retain the status as the best book convention and family-friendliest as well."

Readers of all ages and from all walks of life have been drawn not just to the original pulp magazine cover artwork but the stories contained therein and so have rediscovered what a century ago was America's favorite form of entertainment.

Stories from the Golden Age contain 153 stories written by L. Ron Hubbard that have been published in 80 volumes, in a wide spectrum of genres, including adventure, western, horror, mystery, detective, fantasy, science fiction and even some romance, using his own and 15 pen names. The series has now sold over 2.7 million copies and has helped bring about a renaissance in what had been America's favorite form of entertainment throughout the 20th century. U.S. Footwear Industry Growth Continues to be Comfort-Driven, Reports NPD

The U.S. footwear industry grew by 7 percent in the first half of 2018, according to The NPD Group.[1] Growth was driven by gains in casual footwear and online shopping. Click here to read the latest news.

Sport leisure was the fastest growing category, capturing 65 percent of dollar sales gains, as athleisure continues to penetrate all facets of the footwear market.[1] Fashion, which is still the largest category, grew a healthy 5 percent after two years of declines, largely due to the comfort trend. Aside from sneakers, the top fashion silhouettes in the men's market were sport slides and mules/clogs, fashion slides and strappy sandals for women, and sport slides and strappy sandals for kids.[2] More info here.

"'Comfort' is no longer a bad word. In fact, consumers today are reluctant to compromise on comfort and the definition is evolving," said Beth Goldstein, fashion footwear and accessories analyst, The NPD Group. "With comfort in season year-round and the 'athletic as fashion' movement continuing to progress, comfort is here to stay. Brands and retailers must find ways to innovate and embrace this new norm."

Helping to fuel growth, more consumers are buying footwear online. E-commerce accounted for 90 percent of the industry's gains over the past year. Men's and women's sport leisure categories, as well as women's fashion are driving the growth.[3] NPD's Checkout E-commerce information reveals that 36 percent of online shoppers have purchased footwear online, an increase of two percentage points over the prior year. As comfort-oriented silhouettes drive sales and more consumers are purchasing footwear online, additional growth opportunities are also coming to the fore. A recent NPD survey found that respondents are particularly looking for footwear that is lightweight (44 percent), breathable (43 percent), and odor resistant (40 percent) in their future footwear purchases. Social responsibility and sustainability concerns are becoming anther platform for innovation and fueling change in the industry, with Millennials leading the pack. Among adults, 27 percent have made some type of purchase specifically because of supporting a brand's social position, and the figure jumps to 36 percent among 18-34 year olds. [4]

"Brands must be innovative and have a social and eco-consciousness to succeed in the future. Consumers that will soon make up their largest customer base care about these issues. Brands must play in this space and over-communicate their positioning to win over consumers in a footwear market that is both growing and transitioning," said Goldstein.

Bookeo’s Full-Scale Integration with Square Is Opportunity to Further Streamline Payments

Bookeo, a leading online booking and scheduling system, has partnered with Square, one of the world's most popular payment platforms and card processing system, to make it easy for small and medium businesses using Bookeo to accept in-store and online payments with Square.

The integration with Square offers real-time, automatic integration between Bookeo's online scheduling and reservation system and Square's payment system.

With the integration, businesses can easily accept in-store payments from their customers using the Square Point of Sale. Their customers can swipe, tap or dip credit or debit cards on the Square readers in-store to pay for their bookings. Using the Square readers reduces businesses exposure to chargebacks since this is considered a "card present" transaction. This also means lower transaction fees for business: processing fees for swipe, dip and tap payments are lower than fees for keyed-in payments. Businesses can also use Square to process payments for bookings made online by customers. Whether online or in-person, payments made via Square are instantly and automatically reflected on the bookings in Bookeo.

California Mover Ship Smart Inc. Launches Annual Scholarship Program For College Students

Ship Smart Inc., a California-based mover that specializes in small moves, has launched a scholarship program aimed at benefiting students attending colleges, universities, and schools. The program, dubbed 'The Ship Smart Scholarship' is now underway and applicants from all across the US are free to apply.

"We started this scholarship program because we wanted to give back to the community", said Matt from Ship Smart Inc. "We deliberated on how best we could do this and (in the end) we decided to create something that would benefit kids in school. Our research showed us that students in universities, colleges, and similar learning institutions face various financial challenges on a daily basis. We therefore decided to make this demographic our target beneficiary. We are hoping that in due time, this program can grow bigger and benefit even more people."

The Ship Smart Scholarship has four awards. The first award is for $1000, the second is for $500, while the third and fourth awards are worth $300 each. The application window is open between now and December 7, 2018. All students with a GPA of 3.0 and above are eligible to apply, regardless of their age. Students of truck-driving schools and logistics programs are also allowed to apply. To join, all interested candidates should send a 1000 word essay/article to eservices(at)shipsmart(dot)com. The essay/article should talk about small moves, shipping furniture, antiques,electronics, artwork, packing or any of the services that the company deals in. The scholarship committee will pick a winner on December 14th.

Ship Smart Inc. hopes that through this scholarship program, they will be able to help some needy students, albeit in a small way. Dan Gallagher, Recently Retired 30-Year Certified Financial Expert, Launches The Secrets of Successful Financial Planning for Take-Charge Consumers

Dan Gallagher, author, keynote speaker and recently retired, nationally recognized Certified Financial Planner with over 30 years of professional experience, launches The Secrets of Successful Financial Planning. Tennis Legends Are Created Here at the Sports Legends Experience at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis

Fans across the world are watching the incredible action at the U.S. Open and that is inspiring the next generation to get in the game themselves. At Riley Children's Health Sports Legends Experience, children and their grownups can learn directly from someone who's been part of teaching the game since Arthur Ashe captured the first US Open men's championship in 1968. Families are encouraged to learn or perfect their game on miniature tennis courts at the Sports Legends Experience at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. Tennis is one of several sports that focus on fun, family fitness and intergenerational interaction at the world's largest children's museum. Other sports include: football, basketball, hockey, soccer, pedal car racing (drag strip and oval), golf, and baseball. Another huge component is learning how sports can be used to teach valuable life lessons including good sportsmanship, honesty, fairness, hard work, dedication, critical thinking and playing to your strengths.

In addition to coaches and actor interpreters who cheer on visitors and share tips, there's a special treat that the public can't find anywhere else. Her name is Barbara Wynne and she brings a passion and excitement to the game that has inspired more than 100,000 youngsters who have been her students during the last 50 years. Wynne's philosophy is based around the vision of legendary tennis player Arthur Ashe. Wynne has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. The International Tennis Hall of Fame awarded her the Educational Merit Award. She also received the International Tennis Federation's Service to Tennis Award, and she is now immortalized in bronze along the Old National Bank Sports Legends Avenue of Champions.

Who knows, maybe one of her students will one day make a name for him or herself on the national stage.
