WEDU Communications Releases Mathbook Series Just in Time for Back to School

By connecting math and Ryan's adventures, children can follow along without even realizing the books are introducing concepts of beginner's math.

The books not only focus on math but also set up a theme for the positive re-enforcement of friendships, and cultivates children's imagination for a meaningful vision of a brighter future.

As stated by Ms. Marina Lee, a teacher based in Los Angeles, CA, "the books are cleverly designed to teach early elementary students the basic numerical and mathematical concepts" while the stories are illustrated through comic book style novels, the books make sense of concepts that are foreign to young children, while it "readies the children for the adventures to follow" both in the books and in real life. Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society Approves New Chapter for Chapman University

Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious honor society, has admitted Chapman University as a member.

"Less than 10 percent of U.S. colleges and universities have received the designation of Phi Beta Kappa," said Chapman University President Daniele Struppa. "It is truly the highest distinction a university can earn. We are proud to have been selected to join this time-honored association, and we know it is an important next step in the life of Chapman University."

Student Impact

The benefit to students is enduring, Struppa said

"When a student is elected as a Phi Beta Kappa scholar, it is a prestigious achievement that will have a highly positive impact on their career pursuits and lifelong opportunities," the president noted. "To employers and future associates, it is a recognized measurement of their hard work, critical thinking skills and intellectual curiosity."

The honor follows a rigorous three-year application and review process. Chapman will officially open its Phi Beta Kappa (PBK) chapter this fall.

In addition to having a top GPA, students must meet Phi Beta Kappa's stringent national requirements in mathematics, foreign languages, conduct/character and breadth and depth in the liberal arts and sciences. These students are then acknowledged as the top 10 percent of the University's undergraduate liberal arts and science students and are granted lifetime membership. Students are inducted as members of PBK in their final year of college. All members are entitled to wear the Phi Beta Kappa "key" pin, an internationally recognized symbol of academic and personal achievement.

Acknowledgement of Excellence

"This is an exciting and proud time for us ― Chapman's substantial growth and educational advancements have again been heralded on a national stage," said Lisa Leitz, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Peace Studies at Chapman University. Leitz led the committee working on Chapman's application. "This acknowledgment heightens the prestige of Chapman's undergraduate education. Every aspect of what makes a university exceptional – from general education requirements to student affairs programming, graduation rates to financial stability, library holdings to faculty governance procedures — was evaluated by PBK at Chapman over the last 20 years. This success acknowledges our simultaneous growth and improved educational outcomes of our students and faculty."
Endowment Support

Chapman has committed to supporting its PBK chapter by establishing a $3 million endowment designated to further the work of Phi Beta Kappa at Chapman and to support related initiatives on campus that develop the talents of Chapman students in preparation for graduate work and excellence in the workforce.

Students elected to Phi Beta Kappa join a lifetime network of more than 500,000 other members around the nation who are business, technology and government leaders; distinguished scientists, doctors and lawyers; noted artists, writers and journalists; and prominent activists and philanthropists.

The first five universities to found Phi Beta Kappa chapters were the College of William & Mary (1776), Yale University (1780), Harvard University (1781), Dartmouth College (1787) and Union College (1817).

With its new membership in PBK, Chapman University joins the company of Stanford University, UCLA, UC Berkeley, Occidental College, Scripps College, UC San Diego, UC Davis, San Francisco State, Claremont McKenna, Pomona College and others in California.

Artistica Italian Gallery Acquires Deruta of Italy

Artistica Italian Gallery, a family-owned importer of Italian home decor for over 28 years, announced that it has acquired the assets of New York-based Deruta of Italy, the oldest B2B distributor of hand-painted ceramics and majolica from the medieval hill town of Deruta, Italy, into the United States. Coinciding with Deruta of Italy's 35th anniversary, the sale sets in motion a comprehensive marketing and rebranding campaign, including the company's first-ever B2B eCommerce website.

A catalogue featuring new product collections in addition to key line extensions to existing collections is on the works.

"We are proud to continue the storied legacy of Deruta of Italy in the USA," said Marco Margaritelli, founder of Artistica, noting that the painstaking production process used to create the intricately detailed wares has resulted in limited availability of Deruta-produced designs in the American market.

The town came to prominence for its ceramics in the 15th and 16th centuries; today, each piece is still meticulously handcrafted by master artisans in the same time-honored technique to realize one-of-a-kind works of ceramic art signed by the artist. "We can continue to provide the market with the highest quality of handmade ceramics ready for immediate shipping," Margaritelli continued, "while preserving the tradition of craftsmanship that would have otherwise resulted in a major loss for Deruta's Italian suppliers."

All Deruta products will be available for drop-shipping to third-party e-commerce sites.
