This short video is funny, but the subject – not so much. Trinity Guardion, provider of the Soteria™ Bed Barrier infection prevention products for hospital mattresses, has created a light hearted way to spread the message of soft surface contamination issues on hospital mattresses. In light of growing evidence that mattresses harbor potentially pathogenic contamination and pose a significant risk to patients and caregivers, the company feels it is important to raise awareness about the topic through all available channels, including social media and humorous content.
The video depicts several animated versions of pathogens, such as Clostridium difficile and Acinetobacter baumanii, having a grand old time on the surface of a mattress, despite hard-surface disinfectants and UV lighting being used to attempt to disinfect it. The characters are drawn to scale on the rough soft surface, which is based on actual scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of hospital mattress fabrics, to show the viewer how these microbes can hide in the rough areas of a mattress covering. Research conducted by Xavier University proves that one step hard surface disinfectants achieves less than a one log reduction on hospital mattresses.
There is a growing awareness of the contribution of beds and mattresses to hospital acquired infections with clinicians, accrediting bodies and Federal agencies. This video puts the issue of mattress and bed disinfection into layman's language that all stake holders can understand. What you can't see is just as important as what you can when it comes to cleaning and disinfection.
