Signpost Digital Initiative Reaches 1 Million People Across Three Continents

Signpost, a partnership between the global humanitarian organizations Mercy Corps and the International Rescue Committee, has reached 1 million refugees, asylum seekers and crisis-affected communities with critical information across seven countries and three continents. Through a suite of digital tools, Signpost provides up-to-date information in multiple languages on legal rights and documentation, accommodation, transportation, medical care and more to people who are in transit or starting life in a new country. Read all the related news.

Signpost, supported by Cisco, Google, Microsoft and TripAdvisor, initially began as Refugee.Info, a mobile-friendly website launched in 2015 to assist refugees arriving on the Greek islands. Since then, Refugee.Info has reached an estimated 60 percent of the refugee population in Greece. Signpost has expanded to four additional countries in Europe and has launched regional platforms in Jordan (Khabrona.Info) and El Salvador (CuentaNos.org), providing WiFi connectivity and information in seven languages through websites, Facebook, a blog and service maps. "We're thrilled that we've been able to help more than 1 million people get the support and information they need during some of the toughest and scariest chapters of their lives," says Meghann Rhynard-Geil, Technology for Development Advisor at Mercy Corps. "With a record 68.5 million people on the run because of conflict, poverty and climate change, technology and private sector partnership with humanitarian organizations will continue playing a critical role helping people in search of a better life."

"Technology, when coupled with human-centered design can play a critical role in providing solutions to the global refugee crisis. Signpost meets refugees where they're at – whether via a website, social media, or through face-to-face communication that is enhanced by the use of digital technology – to provide critical information and help save lives," says Lani Fortier, Signpost Project Director for the International Rescue Committee. "People experiencing crisis have enough obstacles to overcome as they work to survive and rebuild their lives. Signpost ensures that misinformation is not another barrier to overcome."

In a new place and without speaking the local language, refugees often lack basic information they need to access essential humanitarian services. And after suffering or witnessing traumatic events for months or years, they are often unprepared to absorb complex information. In this environment, rumors and misinformation can take the place of credible news. In addition to providing up-to-date information, Signpost also employs social media moderators who are refugees themselves to provide two-way communication, answering questions and providing guidance in users' own languages and on their preferred platform. In 2018, 11,000 Signpost users sent 94,200 messages to social media moderators.

"Making information universally accessible and useful is a core part of our mission," says Hector Mujica, Program Manager at Google.org. "As such, we're proud to support Signpost not only with financial contributions, but with Googlers—our top asset—who've dedicated time and technical expertise to help expand this powerful tool to the most marginalized communities around the world." Mercy Corps and the International Rescue Committee aim to continue expanding Signpost's presence in countries situated along migration routes, such as the Central Mediterranean, or where people are displaced due to conflict or crisis.

Swych Unveils Blockchain-Powered Global Gifting and Shopping Platform

Swych, a digital gifting platform that currently processes more than a million gifting transactions a year for both consumers and businesses, today announced its advancement to a blockchain-based platform that it believes will significantly reduce the fees and other friction points associated with cross-border gifting. With a network of over 600+ partner brands worldwide, representing billions of products, this transition marks a significant advancement toward Swych's mission of creating the global standard for digital gifting.

The Swych gifting network enables frictionless cross-border person-to-person or business-to-consumer gifting and empowers instant digital gifting transactions with zero fees, agnostic of underlying fiat currency or geography. Any gift sent through the Swych platform can be "swyched," redeemed, and spent at any retailer on the Swych network, ensuring satisfaction of both the sender and the recipient, eliminating the guesswork out of gifting, and erasing the challenge of geographical borders between customers.

CEO and Founder of Swych, Deepak Jain, said "While the world has become increasingly interconnected since the arrival of the internet, the process of sending a gift — and in particular across countries — has remained stagnant with few and unimaginative choices, shipping hurdles and overall customer dissatisfaction. Our blockchain-powered platform will bring long overdue innovation to the $400B gifting market, now expected to grow to $700B by 2024, by making each gift a perfect one for recipients while eliminating loss of value through any fees or foreign exchange conversions." Read all the related news.

There has been an estimated $149 million in gift card sales in 2017 – an increase of 54% from 2007. Plastic gift cards have become synonymous with inflexibility, fraud, and obsolete technology. Additionally, traditional gift card networks and distribution schemes are difficult to scale across borders, and plastic gift cards are often forgotten in drawers. Building on its proven success with digital distribution, fraud management and strong data insights in consumers' gifting behaviors, Swych's blockchain integration enables new horizons for cross-border gifting, as well as several exciting new use cases such as loyalty redemption, employee incentives, frictionless travel shopping, and easy access to merchant offers.

Building on the Stellar Network, the platform's blockchain elements operate seamlessly in the background. Swych users can easily send, redeem, and swych digital gift cards without any prior knowledge of blockchain technology, and without compromising on transaction speeds, security, and flexibility of the popular Swych gifting service.

Director of Partnerships of the Stellar Development Foundation, Lisa Nestor, said "By using the Stellar Network, Swych enables instant and secure purchases redeemable with any of their retail partners across the globe. Swych is leading the way forward in the gifting industry by integrating blockchain technology and we're excited to see how the industry will continue to evolve." Be alert to the latest news.

Jain said, "Working with Stellar and bringing the inherent advantages of the distributed ledger technology to the forefront, we intend to provide an example to the entire community of how blockchain can be used to solve a real-world problem that pretty much any consumer can identify with. Sending a digital gift to another consumer that can be instantly redeemed and spent for merchandise, travel, dining, entertainment or other popular categories without jumping through the hassles of bank accounts, plastic cards, cash withdrawals or foreign exchange fees is the perfect example of how to use technology to simplify consumers' lives."

This news comes on the heels of Swych's recent partnership with WeChat, Travelex, and Finablr, and acquisition of GiftCardsIndia, which allows Swych users in the U.S. to send personal digital gift cards to loved ones in India. The Swych app is available for download on iOS and Android. For more information, please visit http://www.goswych.com.

The Sparkle Box Children's Book Prompts Viral Movement to Counter the Commercialism of Christmas

The award-winning children's book, The Sparkle Box: A Gift with the Power to Change Christmas, has sparked a viral movement over social media to put the focus on the true meaning of Christmas with a simple Christmas tradition called The Sparkle Box. In a show of support, Worthy Publishing, the book's publisher, has done something unprecedented in the traditional world of children's book publishing: it put a complete version of The Sparkle Box online for free through December 31, 2018.

The movement is inspired by a tradition called The Sparkle Box that is revealed at the end of the book. What The Sparkle Box contains catches the main character, and readers, by surprise. Unlike traditions pointing to the North Pole, The Sparkle Box points to the origin of Christmas: a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and the message he taught to care for those in need.

The Sparkle Box tradition requires the participant to give a gift to someone in need of basic necessities such as food, clothing, clean water or kindness. They write down the gift given and place it in the box. On Christmas morning, they remember Jesus by reading out loud The Sparkle Box gift given in honor of his birthday.

While The Sparkle Box tradition strikes a chord with Christians, author Jill Hardie believes the tradition is a powerful way to add meaning to Christmas, regardless of religious beliefs. "Studies consistently show that Christmas is a time of stress, loneliness and depression for many of the 90% of Americans who celebrate Christmas," said Hardie.

"The Sparkle Box tradition gives us a way to experience more peace and joy in the season, combating commercialism and fostering connectedness. It's a way to remember the teachings of Jesus, which, whether or not you are Christian, are quite beautiful. One of his core messages was we have the power to be a light in the world by helping those in need."

Participants in The Sparkle Box movement are rallying around a social media challenge to take and share #TheSparkleBoxChallenge: read the book online for free, share it, and do the tradition.

Read this for more information.:

https://jessicapressreleases.blogspot.com/2018/05/bright-pattern-provides-innovative.html

Hardie says the movement was inspired by thousands of readers who have shared that The Sparkle Box has become a favorite Christmas tradition and source of joy in their homes, community centers, churches and schools.

Readers who would like to take part in #TheSparkleBoxChallenge or learn more about The Sparkle Box book and tradition, are invited to visit TheSparkleBox.com where they can read the book for free through December 31, 2018.

The Sparkle Box: A Gift with the Power to Change Christmas was published in hardback in 2012 by Ideals Children's Books, a division of Guideposts. The Sparkle Box was awarded the prestigious Christian Book Award in 2014 by the ECPA. On October 2, 2018, The Sparkle Box was released in paperback by Worthy Publishing. Both the hardback and paperback editions come with a foldable Sparkle Box included in the back of the book. Written by Jill Hardie and illustrated by Christine Kornacki, The Sparkle Box is available at local bookstores and online at Barnes & Noble, Christian Books and Amazon. The free online version is available through December 31, 2018 on TheSparkleBox.com.
