Nonprofits Can Now Rent Technology to Boost Fundraising

In a class of its own, Karma Payments provides nonprofit organizations with technology unavailable elsewhere in the industry. This includes cashless payment device rentals—no other company has this option. Ideal for donations at special events, Instant Karma invites instant philanthropy for charitable causes by securely accepting mobile pay and all major cards. It is small enough to be handheld and can be rented daily, weekly, or monthly. Organizations may customize their device to spark brand awareness.

Advantageous year-round, Instant Karma particularly flourishes for spring fundraisers. Donations can be made anytime, anywhere—on trails, in parks, city plazas—attended or unattended. Think 5K races, charity golf tournaments or softball games, school or craft fairs, silent auctions, plant, bake, or book sales, garden galas, community festivals, pet parades, Memorial Day benefits, Earth Day celebrations…the sky is the limit.

Renting is a smart choice for short-term payment processing needs. It is cost effective (why purchase a device for one-time use?) and worthwhile for optimal fundraising (cashless giving raises the average cash donation amount by 300 percent. Some nonprofits have seen a 600 percent increase).

Two weatherproof, easy-to-use models are available to rent. No login or lengthy setup necessary, simply power on and donations can be made.

Tabletop:
Designed for use in a fixed location (countertop, lobby, market); beneficial in brick and mortar institutions or outdoor areas with access to power.

Mobile:
Accepts donations on-the-go, complete with an ergonomic handle, ultra-light design, and eight hour battery.

Instant Karma uses wireless connections for payments. If no signal is available, up to 1500 transactions can be stored offline and processed once a connection is restored.

"We value nonprofits and their charitable work," says Chris Fleisch, co-founder and vice president, business development, Karma Payments. "To support their worthy efforts, we offer beneficial, cost effective technology. Our rental program saves expensive product costs, while increasing contribution opportunities."

Renters receive the same white-glove treatment as buyers: Top quality products, low cost processing, and impeccable 24/7 customer support. All rentals require a minimum one week contract. If desired, the device may be purchased at any point during the rental process; if prior to the contract's conclusion, the rental fee (not including service fees) will be credited to the purchase. Bulk pricing is available.  Be alert to the latest news.

Zerod, the Performance Jacket with the Look of a Trench Coat, Launches on Kickstarter

Texlab, which partners with the world's leading textile suppliers to integrate cutting-edge technology into its products, has introduced its new Zerod Jacket on Kickstarter.

The performance jacket also offers the look of a stylish and trendy Trench Coat design so it can be worn at the office, out on the town, or during leisure activities. Zerod is also designed to block harsh winds and rain while providing essential warmth – featuring a detachable inner jacket, so it can be worn during any season. Click here to read the latest news.

According to Zerod Co-founder Margaret Byrd, the name of the jacket is derived from zero 'd' for 'down,' since the extra warmth from the detachable inner jacket is filled with synthetic down that is 100 percent animal-free.

"The idea for the jacket came from a friend who is an entrepreneur and outdoor enthusiast, who found his closet was half filled with trench coat style jackets and the other half were performance jackets that he wore for leisure activities," Byrd said. "However, the trench coats didn't hold up well in the cold or heavy rain when he was working, while the performance jackets did not match the suit and tie look and made him look unprofessional. So, inspired by the detachable liners of the performance jackets, which are integrated into the design, the resulting Zerod is a truly multifunctional jacket that can be worn during nearly any activity and any time of the year."

Zerod features include:

"Graphene is one of the natural methods that is used to regulate skin temperature and increase it by an average of 2°C by evenly spreading heat from the warmer parts of your body, like your chest and back, to the other colder parts of the body," Byrd said. "The Graphene Membrane actually makes you "feel cooler" in warm/hot temperatures due to the heat conductive feature – which spreads the heat from warmer to colder sections of the insulated areas, and vice versa."

Also, while sweat contains bacteria that quickly grows and makes the clothes smell, graphene is bacteriostatic.

"By using Graphene, bacteria can't grow or reproduce on its surface, making Zerod anti-bacteria and anti-odor," Byrd said. "We are not the first ones to apply graphene technology to a jacket, we are truly the first company to bring to the market at the lowest price."

For more information about the new jacket that outperforms most of the ultra-light jackets on the market, visit the Zerod Jacket Campaign Page on Kickstarter.

How to Conquer Writer's Block During National Poetry Month this April

Poet and teacher Taylor Mali still remembers the metaphor and poem that a student crafted for herself from a list of words he had written on the blackboard.

My father is a broken mirror,
which is to say he's always been
hard to handle without cutting yourself.
He's been shattered into a thousand pieces,
but in every one I can still recognize
my own reflection. Read latest news here.

That poem written in 2017 convinced Mali that he needed to invent some sort of game or activity to quickly generate thousands of unique metaphors. "I wanted to replicate her experience for others without having to waste valuable time writing lists of words on the board or talking about the different parts of speech that make up a metaphor."

Fast forward three years and Metaphor Dice is what he came up with, a writing prompt dice game, which is available on Amazon and was recently featured on the NPR podcast How I Built This. There are now two editions, the original 12-dice Starter Set, and a 9-dice expansion set which is nicknamed the "Erudition Edition" because of its slightly more challenging vocabulary (see below).

Underling both sets of dice is the understanding that metaphors are really just equations between nouns, adjectives, and objects. "Every human culture that has ever lived has developed some kind of metaphorical language to help us talk about and understand the big ideas in our life," Mali says. We comprehend difficult ideas by comparing them to smaller objects. Metaphors essentially say, "Pretend this concept is equal to this thing. What is Death? Death is a flawed miracle!"

Hailed by teachers as "a game changer for teaching creative writing," Metaphor Dice have found their way into classrooms. Even teachers and schools who cannot afford the dice have been able to receive a set as a result of the generosity of ordinary people. Anyone who visits the Metaphor Dice website has the opportunity to buy a set for a teacher they do not know. To date, almost 1,000 sets have been sent out this way.

CRAVEN vs. FECKLESS
After the success of the first set in 2018, Mali decided that the next step should be an expansion set containing slightly bigger and more challenging words. "I have a lot of followers who are teachers just like me," Mali says. "And I guess they just wanted to make the process a little more of a learning experience." Not every word will send you to the dictionary, however, "because that would quickly kill the joy of rolling dice and feel more like homework. Some are big vocabulary words, but the rest are just quirky and wonderful."

What about you? If you rolled the following metaphor, "My family is an obstinate junkyard," what would you write next? What treasures have you found among the scrap? What are the hours of operation? And what dog wanders the fence line each night by moonlight?

AX Semantics Launches AI-Powered Automated Content Generation For Financial Services Sector

AX Semantics, an AI-powered, natural language generation (NLG) leader, today announced a new range of content generation software for the financial services and banking sector. Available in more than 110 languages, AX Semantics' addresses the pain point of recurring financial reports, regulatory filings, executive summaries, and other written communication - all of which typically require massive amounts of financial data from disparate sources to be gathered, analyzed and translated into text customized for a broad range of audiences and languages. AX Semantics' NLG software powered by AI automates these processes. It produces smartly-written narratives that read the same as if a human wrote them -- automating tedious, resource-intensive tasks and allowing financial firms to access "new gold" by analyzing and understanding their customer and product data faster than their competitors.

Financial analysts, brokers, and executives face the demand to quickly update the content required by state and federal laws and regulations, such as details about investment plans, risk assessments, and financial filings -- all of which must be updated regularly. AX Semantics' NLG software enables finance employees to effortlessly turn mountains of data into real-time actionable written narratives, create reports, descriptions of terms and loans, draft regulatory filings, and documents detailing investments -- all with minimal training -- freeing up bandwidth for higher-value activities and responsibilities.

"Financial services companies now have a simple way not only to produce content but to also rapidly revise it when there has been an important development or a new regulation -- saving significant resources in terms of man-hours and costs," said Saim Rolf Alkan, CEO and founder of AX Semantics. "Financial reports that used to take analysts and executives days to produce can now be completed in seconds using AX Semantics."

AX Semantics content generation features for finance include:

Mario Berger, risk advisory director at Deloitte, said the firm experienced an almost 80% reduction in time spent on projects like recurring reports by using content generation software. "In our estimation, projects in this environment are significantly more successful if parts or even the entire 'path' of the process is automated – i.e., data management, for example, using Natural Language Processing. We consider the fundamental potential to be very high."

Supercharged Performance for Open Source Databases

rENIAC, the drop-in data accelerator first deployed on Intel® FPGA Programmable Acceleration Cards, today announced that it has received Series A funding led by Intel Capital with participation from UMC Capital, Leawood Venture Capital, Divergent Capital, Bullpen Capital, Upheaval Investments and J-Angels.

Already in use by leading organizations including a major telco and major media studio, rENIAC has developed an ultrafast data engine to power the increasing requirements of data center and edge applications, particularly those based on artificial intelligence and machine learning. rENIAC's FPGA-backed Data Engine supercharges applications so customers can process massive data sets in real time, maintain service-level agreements (SLAs) for end users and eliminate time spent on performance tuning.

"The amount of data required for real time, customer-facing applications is impossible to operationalize when managed through software alone, and many organizations are struggling to build infrastructure that supports their AI, ML or IoT initiatives," said Prasanna Sundararajan, CEO and co-founder of rENIAC. "We are proud to provide the first drop-in data accelerator so customers using open source databases can 'right size' their existing data architecture - and avoid the pain of database migration or application refactoring while improving the end user experience."

Episcopal Relief & Development Receives $600,000 Grant from Islamic Relief USA to Expand Work to Combat Violence Against Women and Girls in Liberia

Episcopal Relief & Development has received a second, three-year, $600,000 grant from Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA) to expand a ground-breaking partnership with the humanitarian arm of the Episcopal Church of Liberia (ECL-RD) to combat gender-based violence in Liberia. This program, which equips faith and community leaders to transform harmful cultural and religious attitudes towards women, is also supported by a grant from the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women, The Laura Ellen & Robert Muglia Family Foundation, and other generous donations.

Liberia is considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world for women and children. More than 50% of Liberians live in poverty and the country has some of the highest rates globally of violence against women and girls. Violence takes many forms, including female genital cutting, child marriage and economic violence such as the denial of education. According to the United Nations, 39% of women experience physical or sexual intimate partner violence at least once in their lifetime. Faith and community leaders play a critical role in helping shape positive cultural views on gender equality.

"Women have been crucial in peacebuilding and development in Liberia, and this International Women's Day we celebrate their economic, cultural and political achievements," said Chiseche Mibenge, Director of Gender Initiatives for Episcopal Relief & Development. "Islamic Relief USA's generous support for ECL-RD's work with faith leaders to attain gender equality is an affirmation of Liberian women's dignity and the transformative impact that the program has had on communities."

Launched in 2015, the initial phase of the project worked to engage faith leaders in two counties, developing a gender-based violence prevention toolkit and training 84 Christian and Muslim faith leaders to speak out against violence against women and girls in their communities. The program also equipped faith leaders to more effectively support survivors of violence. Through trainings and organized events, this core group of leaders then reached out to 679 imams and priests. This second phase of the project, Scaling Up Faith Leaders Engagement to Prevent and Respond to Violence Against Women & Girls (VAWG Liberia), continues the work in the initial two counties, and expands to two additional ones in order to train and equip 237 faith leaders and 360 youth leaders across 54 townships. The overall goal of VAWG Liberia is for over 28,000 women and girls to experience less intimate partner violence and non-partner sexual violence, and to have increased access to support services. Read latest news here.

"Islamic Relief USA's partnership in this program has been instrumental in shifting harmful attitudes and behaviors towards women and girls," said Annette Musu Kiawu, the National Director for Episcopal Church of Liberia Relief & Development. "They have inspired a spirit of reconciliation in our multi-faith society and helped us to recognize the value of engaging both Christian and Muslim faith leaders to transform communities.

"Islamic Relief USA is proud of its partnership with Episcopal Relief & Development that has focused on tackling one of the most pressing issues impacting women and girls in Liberia," said Sharif Aly, CEO of Islamic Relief USA. "Through a comprehensive, faith grounded approach, we have been able to build trust throughout communities and make significant progress towards combating gender-based violence in an oftentimes highly volatile environment."
