Breast Reconstruction Specialist Surgeon Dr. Constance M Chen with Tips on Why Feeling is Lost After Mastectomy and How Sensation Can Be Restored

Autologous reconstruction – using a woman's own tissue to create a new breast – has become the "gold standard" for breast reconstruction, either immediately following mastectomy or later. "Nipple-sparing mastectomy with autologous tissue breast reconstruction delivers a soft, warm, natural breast that is often barely distinguishable from a woman's original breast," says plastic surgeon and breast specialist Dr. Constance M. Chen. "Sometimes, however, the natural look and feel of the reconstructed breast may be more apparent to others than it is to the woman herself." While pleased with the appearance of her new breasts, some women are disappointed to realize that to her reconstructed breast is numb to touch and sexual arousal.

"As breast reconstruction techniques have been developed, the emphasis until now has been on how the woman would look," says Dr. Chen. "The next frontier in reconstructive surgery is to reconnect nerves and restore sensation to the breast. New techniques show great promise and many women are now experiencing varying degrees of restored feeling."

Dr. Chen answers questions about loss and restoration of feeling in reconstructed breasts.

"Why is feeling lost after mastectomy? Can it return?"
During a mastectomy, the nerves that provide feeling to the breast and nipple are severed, causing loss of sensation in the remaining skin. Some women experience a limited return of sensation over time, dependent in part on the type of reconstruction they have. Implants form a physical barrier that prevents nerves from growing through to the skin. Autologous reconstruction, which transfers blood vessels and nerves along with fat and skin, offers the best opportunity for nerve regeneration since nerves are more likely to grow in natural tissue.

Of the four different types of nerve sensation – deep pressure, light touch, pain, and temperature – deep pressure sensation returns most quickly and temperature most slowly. But nerves grow very slowly and even when the regenerated nerves reach the skin after months or years, the quality of sensation is variable.

"How can sensation be restored?"
Because nerve regeneration is slow and results are unpredictable, reconnecting nerves has not always been a surgical priority. But new, meticulous microsurgical techniques that use neural tubes and nerve grafts have enabled surgeons to offer each woman the best possible chance for restoration of feeling. Read related news here.

Two specific methods of autologous reconstruction offer the best opportunity for successfully reconnecting nerves via a procedure called neurrropahy, a microsurgical technique that attaches two nerves. In perforator flap breast reconstruction, the skin, fat, and blood vessels (the "flap") are transferred from a donor site, often the abdomen or upper inner thighs, to create the new breast. During the flap surgery, a sensory nerve that provides feeling to the lower abdominal skin can be included and transferred with the flap to the chest. Surgeons specially trained in this technique can then connect this nerve to nerves that were severed during the mastectomy. This additional surgical step has shown great promise in restoring feeling better and faster than waiting and hoping for nerves to regenerate.

"How can I ensure that I have the best possible chance to have feeling restored?"
One of the most distressing aspects of loss of feeling is that many women were assured that their reconstructed breast would look and feel natural but weren't told that they would lose most or all of the feeling in the breast. Read related news now.

The importance of the return of sensation is different for every woman and should be discussed in the initial surgical consultation so she knows what to expect and has the opportunity to ensure that her surgeon is trained in the techniques that will provide the best outcome.

"What constitutes feeling 'herself' again after breast cancer is an individual matter that has both physical and emotional aspects," says Dr. Chen. "Our responsibility to each patient is to ensure that her expectations are realistic and to offer her choices that let her decide what is the best way for her to regain her confidence and preserve her sense of self."

New Report Finds Nearly 9 Out of 10 Young Alumni Engage in Philanthropic Activity

Young alumni are eager and able to provide both volunteer and financial support, but mainly to causes and organizations that can clearly communicate the impact that their support will generate, according to research by RNL and the Schuler Education Foundation.

The 2020 National Young Alumni Survey report captures data from 40,000 young alumni representing 36 colleges, making this one of the largest studies of its kind. The report appears at a time when alumni participation in fundraising has been decreasing for more than 20 years. Young alumni make up more than 30 percent of the current alumni base in higher education, and increasing their engagement is critical to the future of higher education philanthropy.

Read this for more information.:

https://jessicapressreleases.blogspot.com/2018/05/mothers-day-comes-with-triple-bonus-for.html

One of the most important findings shows that the vast majority of young alumni are philanthropic, with 87 percent of survey respondents reporting they volunteer or make financial donations with a cause or organization. In addition, one out of four reported making donations totaling $1,000 or more in 2018, demonstrating that young alumni often make substantial gifts.

"This research shows that young alumni—often dismissed as uninterested or unable to be philanthropic—are engaged, active donors," said Jason Patenaude, executive director of the Schuler Education Foundation. "However, they are more interested in giving to causes they are passionate about, and they also want to see the impact of their gifts."

Read news here.:

https://jessicapressreleases.blogspot.com/2018/05/the-giant-barbecue-battle-washingtons_15.html

Feeling "connected" is also a major factor in whether young alumni give. Of those who reported donating, 82 percent said they felt "very connected" to their alma mater. Yet only 21 percent of all young alumni in the study said they felt very connected, with 52 percent reporting they were "somewhat connected" and 28 percent feeling neutral or not connected to their alma mater.

Another finding reveals that the prioritization of giving back to an institution is changing for young alumni. While higher education topped the list of causes that young alumni currently support, an institution's annual fund was low on the list of areas they would like to give. Giving to scholarship funds or specific departments/majors ranked highest on the priority list, highlighting that this generation of donors wants to give to specific areas.

"These findings show more than ever that colleges and universities need to adapt their fundraising to the expectations and aspirations of young alumni," said RNL President and CEO Sumit Nijhawan. "Campuses need to identify the passions of their recent graduates, make it easy for them to give to the areas they care most about, and show the impact of gifts so young donors grow into lifelong givers."

The 2020 National Young Alumni Survey report is the initial report from this research. Additional reports analyzing specific donor populations and institution types will follow later this year.

New Bramvik Revolutionary Skirts as the Ultimate Wardrobe Solution to Conquer the Fashion Industry Launches on Kickstarter and is Successfully Funded Within 2 hours

BRAMVIK, a revolutionary clothing brand, launched their patent-pending customizable zipper skirts, also known as Zirts, on March 4th on Kickstarter and hit their goal in 2 hours. These highly innovative skirts consist of two styles, straight chino, and A-line, and feature a mini/base skirt to which extensions called tiers can be added or detached by means of premium quality zippers. Each tier is reversible and can be interchanged between Zirts thus ensuring you never run out of unique outfit options as seen in this video. Read news here.

"With Zirts, you can change the colors, patterns and length of the skirt in a jiffy," said Zirts Co-founder Prasad Bakkamanthala. "This allows you to wear thousands of skirt combinations with only a few Zirts. It's the only skirt that grows with you. Also, for little girls, it is like playing with the Legos, where they can mix and match to build something fun and beautiful." Be alert to read related news.

Prasad notes that Zirts are especially ideal for young girls, providing them multiple styles and the ability to tap into their creative side when choosing something to wear.

As part of the initial launch, Zirts were available in ten solid colors which can be worn with colorful, interchangeable 'tiers' that can be used to create custom designs with any color skirt. Additional solid colors and patterns (prints) will be available later based on demand.

"We are absolutely thrilled to finally present girls and women with an original, stylish and travel- light dressing solution that will save them time, energy and resources as they get ready to face the day," said Rama and Prasad, the creators of Zirts. "Since we are fully funded, we are all set to launch these skirts and introduce them to the world," they added. The focus is on the durability, comfort, and versatility of the apparel which is specifically designed with the modern woman in mind, all this without compromising on quality while keeping an eye on adopting sustainable practices. "We want our customers to fully embrace their unique personalities the best way they know how to: through the Zirt of their choice!" added Prasad.

Made using 100% cotton, the product is fit for a hectic day. It is super comfortable, and supports mobility. It never irritates, itches or discomforts in any of way. Cotton was produced by BCI certified farmers. BCI stands for Better Cotton Initiative which is a holistic approach to sustainable cotton production which covers all three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social and economic. Luxury is all about comfort, style and feeling good. Zirt comes with flaps to cover the zippers on both the front and back side so they don't touch the skin, making it comfortable if seated for a long duration. It also features large pockets which can fit most cellphone models.

Prasad adds that Zirts are ideal for parents of twins or multiple children, offering each the ability to create their own cute matching look while affording them the flexibility to choose the colors and prints they love. And although it is not easy to find skirts for taller girls or women, Zirts will enable the wearer to increase the length of their skirt as needed by simply attaching additional tiers.

"Zippers are the backbone of Zirts. We have created hundreds of prototypes and tried several types of zippers. We then found a perfect zipper that is durable, flexible and lightweight, and are working with one of the major zipper manufacturers in the world. These zippers have been tested and meet human, ecological and CPSIA requirements. Zirts are machine washable!" added the Husband-wife team.
