Today’s Inspired Latina Releases Today’s Inspired Young Latina In National Book Launch

Several young Hispanic women showcased their gratitude and joy as proud first-time authors as they and Jacqueline S. Ruiz, the creator of the international Today's Inspired Latina (TIL) book series, launched the book debut of "Today's Inspired Young Latina" in front of friends and family.

The festive event recently took place at J. C. Restoration, a premier Hispanic-owned restoration company in Rolling Meadows. Written by Ruiz and Alexandria Rios Taylor with a preface by acclaimed Hispanic actor Edward James Olmos, the book details stories of young Latinas overcoming obstacles and creating their own opportunities, as they become part of a dynamic and inspirational generation in American society.

"Today is another amazing representation of what it means to believe in a dream that is bigger than all of us," said Ruiz, one of the book's co-authors. "And today we have the privilege of elevating 14 young Latinas that reached out to us. They believe in something. They wowed us with their presentations that captivated our hearts and minds."

The contributing authors in the book are: Evelyn Lozano, Alondra Ivette Guevara, Arianna Urrutia, Gina Aridal Pardino, Giselle Gonzalez, Andrea Vallejo, Samantha Ante, Maria Clara Ospina, Daniela Limon, Yahayra Argueta, Erica Franco, Gabrielle Hernández Franch, Evelyn Lonzano, Scarlett Magaña-Singh.

Ruiz explained that the idea about getting young Latinas to share their stories came from TIL author Elizabeth Colón-Rivera. From then the seed was planted to premiere the first ever Young LATINATalks at Naperville's North Central College in September. A natural extension was to then capture these stories in an anthology book.

Hernández Franch, one of the book's authors, wrote about her initial dreams of becoming a doctor. Life and God had other plans for her. Becoming a contributor was as an amazing journey for her.

"People say that there are three things that change your life," she said. "It's the people you meet, the events you attend and the books that you've read have the power to change your life. And I'm here at this stage, at this incredible event with the right people holding the right book."

Taylor, also the dean of students at Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn, would have appreciated a book like this when she was a teenager. Unfortunately, there were not many inspirational stories to find. She hopes that will change with this new book.

"When I was in high school, there was very little representation of Latino authorship," she said. "There were very few stories that I could identify with or relate to culturally. These ladies are changing that narrative and unleashing the endless possibilities for their generation."

Today's Young Inspired Latina is available on Amazon for $14.97.

Small Business Owners to Big Brands: “You Don’t Get It”

Small business owners overwhelmingly report that the businesses that market to them neither understand nor listen to them. This makes selling to this group problematic for large and medium sized businesses, who need to take the time to understand the mindsets of Small Business Owners (SBOs). On the 55th episode of the "If You Market" podcast, an authority in business-to-small business marketing explains how large business can improve their success rates.

"SBOs consistently express their dissatisfaction (and distrust) with brand marketers' abilities and attempts to sell and market to them," said Dan Gliatta, CEO of Cargo, a B2B marketing company that helps large brands market to small businesses. "On average, over 50 percent of SBOs feel big brands and markete rs are ineffective in engaging and marketing to them. Which means either one in two brands are failing or 50 percent of every brand's marketing spend is wasted."

Cargo studies have shown that most SBOs fall into one of two groups; Crusaders or Artisans:

The two groups share an emotional attachment to their business that is particular to SBOs — and is the piece larger companies frequently neglect when marketing to them. Read all the related news.

"To them, everything is personal, so marketers wanting to engage and motivate them need to get them to feel if they want to get them to act," Gliatta said.

Karla Jo Helms, CEO of JoTo PR, and co-host of the IYM podcast, agrees. "Emotion drives (small businesses) today. That's the biggest thing, especially in B2B. People don't realize that, they think buying decisions are rational."

Sky Cassidy, "If You Market" podcast Host and CEO of MountainTop Data, underscored the considerable difference there is between marketing to a large company and a small one.

"There's a vast difference in how you market to an enterprise company, marketing manager, and a business owner," Cassidy said. "The (first) one you can say, 'This is going to make your job more convenient, make you look good.' They're sold on it.

"The business owner needs to see profit, needs to know they're not wasting their money because they could give that money to you or they could take their kids to Disneyland. And that's what you're up against with the business owner versus the marketing manager."

Insiders say the ability to appeal to the emotional side of the SBO will become more important, as so-called Millennials – those born between the years 1980-2000 – are the fastest-growing segment of SBOs and may be more inclined to own a small business than members of older age groups. A study released in 2017 found, among other favorable statistics, that Millennials have more experience with small business and greater desire to start businesses than previous generations.(1)

Another study found that Millennials are starting businesses at an earlier age than did previous generations, they're launching more small businesses, and leading larger teams.(2)

"Millennials think, act and behave differently than most of their predecessors," said Gliatta. "They're driven by purpose and passion and cause just as much as they're driven by the bottom line, if not more. With this in mind, Cargo is kicking off the next decade with a proprietary, AI-driven study that will lend insight to better understand and solve the Millennial SBO riddle."

According to the United States Census Bureau, there were 83.1 million Millennials in the United States in 2015. By the end of 2019 they are expected to have overtaken "Boomers" – generally, those born between 1946 and 1964 – as the most populous age group in the United States.3

THE NALA and its Cause Marketing Program Celebrate a Year of Giving

Through collecting baby and school supplies, and shoes, toys and coats, THE NALA, a nationwide digital marketing agency, charity efforts in 2019 made a major impact, locally, nationally and worldwide. Most recently, THE NALA hosted a successful donation drive for Operation Warm, a national nonprofit that makes brand new, high-quality winter coats and gives them away to children in need.

"We raised enough for Operation Warm to make 50 winter coats for kids in need nationwide," said Tiffani Tendell, Vice President - Communications and Business Development at THE NALA. "These coats not only keep kids warm, but promote self-esteem, school attendance and outdoor play."

Along with a number of clients that hosted Operation Warm donation drives, THE NALA's businesses collected hundreds of toys for Toys for Tots in time for Christmas and collected more than 1,500 pairs of shoes for Soles4Souls, a nonprofit global social enterprise committed to fighting poverty through the collection and distribution of shoes and clothing. One of its clients, Caribe Resort, collected more than 640 pairs. The shoes help people in developing nations start and sustain their own small businesses and step out of poverty.

To date, Soles4Souls, which THE NALA has been working with for a decade, has distributed more than 35 million pairs of shoes in 127 countries and generated over $250 million in economic impact.

For years, in fact, THE NALA, as part of its collective cause marketing program, has encouraged its clients to host fundraising campaigns for its many charity partners. In addition to Operation Warm, Toys for Tots and Soles4Souls, its long list of affiliated national and local non-profits includes Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation, Operation Homefront, The Greatest Generations Foundation, Crisis Aid International, Dream With Me Foundation, and StandUp For Kids, among others.

Taiwanese Americans Participate in the Rose Parade to Promote Taiwan’s Vision and Strength

The Rose Parade is one of the many spectacles of American's New Year celebration. This year, China Airlines partnered with Taiwan Tourism Bureau again to build a float themed "Dreams of Flying, Wings of Hope" in which the Taiwan 101 Skycraper, Daxi spinning tops, Pingxi sky lanterns, the gracious hospitality of "tea serving"; delicious steamed dumplings, the endemic Taiwan blue magpie; and the Formosan black bear exploding out of a music box will be representing the goodwill of the people of Taiwan and her natural beauty. All these images of attraction are ingeniously combined with China Airlines miniature aircrafts and live flight attendants. The newly-crowned Miss Taiwanese American Queen, Sissi Lin, along with other Princesses and Ambassadors are invited by the Tourism Bureau Los Angeles Office to join the parade and promote Taiwan. They will unveil Taiwan's float at the 131st Rose Parade in 2020.

"Young people shape our future; they are the hope of our country. Miss Taiwanese Americans are all versatile and gifted in many ways. Through this far-reaching event, the second generation of Taiwanese not only serve as our best goodwill ambassadors to bridge the U.S.-Taiwan relationship, they are also our new blood to reinforce Taiwan's diplomatic engagement in the U.S.," says Abraham Chu, Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles. During their school breaks and holidays, the 2019 Miss Taiwanese Americans have been busy practicing a dance named "Taiwan – The Heart of Asia" choreographed by Eva Hsia, the 2015 Miss Taiwanese American Queen. Their sweet and confident smiles will be a great example of civil diplomacy to deliver the enthusiasm of the Taiwanese people to the American public, and perfectly echo the 131st Rose Parade theme, "The Power of Hope".

"I choreographed it based off of listening to the music and lyrics of the promotional song of 'Taiwan - The Heart of Asia'. I tried to convey Taiwan's beauty and culture into the movements. Inspired by the Aboriginal elements in our outfits I also incorporated a few Aboriginal movements into the dance," says Eva Hsia.

"For this collection, I wanted to create a modern look with aborigine details on everyday clothing. I'll be using a lot of tribal trims, seashells, intricate beading, fringe-like feel to give the clothing a bit of a tribal feeling to them but still modern and less costume-like. One of the motifs I chose to use throughout the collection is the plum flower. Plum flower is the national flower of Taiwan and I really like the meaning of this flower because it only grows in the harshest winter season, but bloom so beautifully and stays alive in such a cold weather. I think this flower symbolizes the Taiwanese people's perseverance to shine and survive in our competitive world today," says Ying Chian*.

2019 marks the China Airlines' 60th Anniversary and the "U.S. - Taiwan Travel Year". "China Airlines is our best partner in promoting Taiwan overseas; their recent increase in U.S. - Taiwan flights help to drive up the overall capacity. The latest issue of Travel + Leisure magazine ranked Taiwan third place in their list of the 20 must-go places to travel, with an emphasis on the island's hiking trails and gorgeous mountains. People who love photography and hiking are welcome to take advantage of China Airlines' latest promotions to fly to Taiwan," says Brad Shih, Director of Taiwan Tourism Bureau's Los Angeles office.
