“Lucy: The Beginnings of Humankind” To Be Available in Audio Format

To mark the 45th year anniversary of the discovery of the most famous hominid fossil in the world, "Lucy: The Beginnings of Humankind" is being released as an audiobook narrated by the author and her discoverer, Dr. Donald Johanson.

One of the most accomplished scholars of human origins, Johanson has produced some of the field's most groundbreaking discoveries, including the most widely known and thoroughly studied fossil of the 20th century, the 3.2-million-year-old "Lucy" skeleton.

The 20th century was peppered with important early-human fossil finds, but Johanson's 1974 discovery in Ethiopia that added a crucial link, prompting major revisions in our understanding of human evolution. "Lucy" possesses an intriguing mixture of ape-like features ( a projecting face and small brain) but also characteristics we consider human, such as upright walking, marking an important step on the path to Homo sapiens.

In the early 1970s the remote region of Ethiopia known as the Afar Triangle was terra incognita and its potential for illuminating our evolutionary past was unrecognized. In spite of the desolate and hostile nature of the area Johanson, with meager funding led an expedition to a site known as Hadar and began to unearth a treasure trove of fossils, including Lucy, that walked the planet some 3 to 4 million years ago. So revolutionary were these discoveries that the entire story of how we became human required substantial revision. Now some 45 years later we know more details of the vital picture of how humans came to be, but the general outlines of the human family tree proposed by Johanson's early work continue to form the core of that story.

His efforts in this have reached across multiple media—including television, books, and his award-winning science website http://www.becominghuman.org, in addition to lecturing at universities, corporations, and public forums. Johanson is the founding director of the internationally respected Institute of Human Origins at Arizona State University and is available for interview.

The audiobook is published through Blackstone Publishing, one of the largest independent audiobook publishers in the U.S., and can be purchased at Audible. Read all the latest news.

Free Doggies for Dementia Photo Shoots Provide Comfort and Ease Loneliness
Photographer Carmen Davailus Buck combines pet therapy and portrait therapy to bring peace to people who have dementia and their families. "A professional portrait of a loved one gives families something special to hold on to as they cope with a devastating illness," she said. Davailus, a Texas native, has traveled all over the country to do these free portrait sessions. She noted, "My goal is to raise awareness about Alzheimer's and other dementia diagnoses everywhere in America."

While portraits capture precious memories, it can be uncomfortable or unnerving for someone with Alzheimer's Disease to sit for a photo shoot, especially with a photographer they don't know. Carmen removes roadblocks by inviting dogs into the portrait sessions. "This allows me to capture people in natural and spontaneous situations," said Davailus. "A dog brings out their personalities in such a beautiful way that the portraits often move families to tears. They become treasured family keepsakes." Davailus became passionate about helping people with Alzheimer's Disease during four decades as a nurse practitioner. She noticed many patients and their families suffered from loneliness and isolation and wanted to find a way to bring them some joy. She knows that families dealing with dementia are often financially strapped. So, she never charges for her Doggies and Dementia portraits. She noted, "The program is designed to gift the family photos and an experience that they wouldn't normally have." Read all the latest news.

Community Support Needed to Continue the Program: The photographer relies on corporate sponsorships to offset the costs involved. So far, she has worked with skincare company Rodan and Fields and The Legacy at Georgetown Senior Living Center. "It's a wonderful opportunity to help an individual and to help raise awareness for Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias," she said.

How Pet Therapy Changed One Man’s Life and Career -- Navy Vet’s dog inspired the brand, Beast & Buckle

There's a special bond between dogs and their human caretakers that goes beyond companionship and loyalty. For one dog owner turned entrepreneur, the one-of-a-kind relationship was so heartfelt, it saved his life.

"Without Clark, I don't know if I'd still be here. The pain of my father's suicide and my own battle with depression took a huge toll on me, one with which I constantly and severely struggled. Clark gave me a new lease on life - I had a reason to wake up every day and smile. He is that important to me and that impactful on my life."

Stew Anderson is the "human" co-founder of Beast & Buckle along with his "furry four-legged" co-founder, a French bulldog named Clark. For Anderson, this business venture wouldn't be possible without Clark. Their unshakeable bond began before creating the dog accessory line.

In 2016, Anderson's world turned upside-down when his father passed away. The next year plunged him into a deep depression. Looking for ways to help him lift his spirits, his mother and sister suggested he get a dog. Although Anderson was always a dog lover, he didn't have many opportunities in the past to own one with his time in the Navy followed by jobs involving travel.

His sister first introduced him to Clark through his puppy photo, and Anderson knew right away that the little gray Frenchie was the best friend for whom he'd been searching. Meeting and bringing Clark home turned out to the best life decision that even changed his whole career trajectory to design Beast & Buckle's flagship harness collection.

"I created Beast & Buckle products because I love my dog more than anything in the entire world," he said. "I wanted him to have something that was safe and comfortable and high-quality but I also really wanted something that would reflect his personality because he's such a fun little guy."

While few dog owners will embark on a journey like Anderson's, scientific studies are uncovering the multiple benefits animals have on humans. Evidence shows how pets can improve mental health and physical factors such as lower blood pressure.

Anderson is a shining example of how animal therapy has the power to transform. With his darkest days behind him, this co-founder is ready to empower others on two and four legs.

About: Beast & Buckle creates stylish and premium quality reversible dog harnesses, leashes and accessories for your four-legged friend. With designs to match the likes of any dog owner or occasion such as Donut, Mimosa, Baseball, Wine, Pizza and more, the core values of this brand are that dogs are on this planet to share love in the world with their human and vice versa. Beast & Buckle is committed to supporting the great organizations that help dogs and humans lead great lives through our "10% Promise." Every year, Beast & Buckle donates 10% of profits to charities supporting animals.
