Charitable Kids’ “Olympics” Hosted at Ford Center at The Star

More than 500 students visited The Star in Frisco, Texas on July 22nd to culminate their summer activities. Students competed in a day of friendly games between nine of the local Kids 'R' Kids of greater Dallas area schools. The students also spent the summertime working - from dance-a-thons, odd jobs, talent shows, carnivals, and more - raising money for Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.

While 2018's event raised approximately $18,000 for Scottish Rite Hospital, this year's proceeds exceeded that at a total of $22,442.

"It's truly heartwarming to see Kids 'R' Kids students working so hard to give back and further the work of the hospital," said Stephanie Brigger, VP of Development for Scottish Rite Hospital. "Since the opening of the new Scottish Rite for Children Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center in Frisco, the support we receive from our community is fundamental in continuing our mission of providing world-class medical care regardless of any family's ability to pay."

The day's schedule began with the national anthem, sung by an alumni patient of the Children's Hospital and a check presentation of the funds raised for the hospital. The games were facilitated by The Gym Station and included Soccer Shootout, Sack Races, 50-Yard Dash, and a Football Obstacle Course. The event ended with the announcement of the winning teams and presentation of trophies; the overall game winner, the most team spirit and the Grand Trophy for the most funds raised.

"The children have been working enthusiastically toward this day all summer," said Tammy Huff, owner of Kids 'R' Kids Legacy West and West Frisco. "This wonderful experience instills core values that last a lifetime."

Dara Torres Inducted Into The USOC Hall of Fame

It was announced today that U.S. Olympic swimming great Dara Torres was elected to the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee Hall of Fame class of 2019. The induction ceremony will take place at the USOC facilities on November 1, 2019. Torres, the iconic swimmer who made global waves with her comeback at 40 years old after having her daughter Tessa, was beating competitors half her age on her way to several American Records at the 2008 Olympic trials in Omaha Nebraska.

Torres, the most medaled US female Olympic athlete, will be joining the likes of Olympic greats Candace Cable (Para alpine skiing, Para Nordic skiing, Para track and field), Lisa Leslie (basketball), Nastia Liukin (gymnastics), Misty May-Treanor (beach volleyball), Apolo Anton Ohno (short track speedskating), Erin Popovich (Para swimming), Chris Waddell (Para alpine skiing, Para track and field), the 1998 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team, John Carlos (legend: track and field), Tommie Smith (legend: track and field), Ron O'Brien (coach: diving), and Tim Nugent (special contributor). This elite group of athletes, coaches, and contributors will be the first inductees into the USOC Hall of Fame since 2012. This award clearly impacted Torres, "I am so honored to be inducted into the USOC Hall of Fame. It is never anything I thought of when I started swimming at 8 years old. I have four older brothers so I've been competitive since the day I was born! To look at the distinguished careers of the other inductees is just so humbling. I hope my induction will inspire other athletes of all ages and instill in them that anything is possible and Age Is Just A Number. My career has never been solely about swimming, it's about inspiring others to do things they never dreamed they could possibly do."

Torres inspired tens of millions of 40+ year old men, women, and moms to achieve whatever they want in their lives. Dara also convinced women that having children is just the beginning of their journey to greatness, not the end. By bringing so many women and moms into swimming and the Olympic movement, Dara has become a favorite for organizations having events focused on accomplishing your goals later in life as well as women's events and conferences. Torres' longtime agent Evan Morgenstein sees Dara's impact every day, "Dara is a transformational celebrity. What she did wasn't just about the medals. Dara empowered women to continue to chase their dreams later in life and show that fitness isn't just for millennials and Gen Xers. The volume of interest corporations and events have in utilizing Dara as a motivational speaker and/or celebrity spokesperson just amazes me!"

Today at 52, Torres lives in South Florida with her daughter Tessa, focusing on being a mom and a role model. The induction will be a very special event for Torres who plans on having her family and friends by her side. Torres has always felt her success was a group effort.

For more information on Dara Torres regarding partnerships or appearances, contact Evan Morgenstein at 919-332-0584 or evan@pmgsports.com.

Pet Euthanasia Rates Decrease by 87% in Maricopa County Arizona, Thanks to Animal Welfare Collaborative, Fix.Adopt.Save.

Prior to 2012, pet homelessness and euthanasia rates in Maricopa County were at all time highs. But at a press conference today hosted by the Alliance for Companion Animals, a coalition encompassed of six animal welfare groups in the county announced that collectively, they have decreased euthanasia by 87% while reducing total intake of animals at shelters by 44% during the seven years of the Fix.Adopt.Save. initiative effectively saving nearly 33,000 animals.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, local officials and members of the animal welfare community were on hand at the Phoenix Fire Department Administration building to learn of the accomplishments in combatting pet homelessness. Additional data shared at the press conference included that more than $4 million has been provided through Fix.Adopt.Save. and its funders in no-cost spay/neuter and wellness services to the residents of Maricopa County totaling over 60,000 spay/neuter surgeries since 2012.

"The collaboration and continued dedication of the Alliance, and our funders, has made a huge impact in Maricopa County," said Sonia Hernandez, project manager for Fix.Adopt.Save. "Through our combined efforts to offer no-cost spay/neuter surgeries, promote adoptions and programs like trap-neuter-return we have gone to the root of the pet homelessness cause and proud to share these results today."

A recent article by the New York Times showed Phoenix as having one of the lowest rates of pet euthanasia in the country, much of which can be attributed to Fix.Adopt.Save. and its Alliance members.

"As a dog owner and animal lover, I am so grateful to have a collaborative group like Fix.Adopt.Save. addressing pet homelessness here in our city and county," said Mayor Kate Gallego. "This organization has been extremely effective in reducing animal euthanasia rates and their resources and expertise are helping make Phoenix a leader on animal welfare."

Members of the Alliance for Companion Animals include the Arizona Animal Welfare League, Arizona Humane Society, Animal Defense League of Arizona, Altered Tails Barnhart Clinics, HALO Animal Rescue and Phoenix Animal Care Coalition 911. The initiative is generously funded by Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust and PetSmart Charities.

A New Breed of Watch-Wearer is Emerging, and They’re Not Just Sporting Smart, Reports NPD

Consumers are changing how they wear watches, and total watch market sales have risen 17 percent to $9.5 billion in the 12 months ending June 2019. Smartwatches have driven much of this growth, but an increasing number of consumers under 35 years of age are embracing the fine watch segment, according a new report from The NPD Group, How Watch Customers Tick – from Smart to Luxury.

"More U.S. adults are wearing watches today than four years ago, and that is a healthy trend for the entire industry," said Reginald Brack, watches and luxury industry analyst, The NPD Group. "Smartwatches have become the entry point for new watch consumers looking to make their own personal statements, creating opportunity for many traditional watch brands across all price points."

Across all age groups, the number of consumers who say they wear a watch today has grown since 2015, with the most significant shifts happening at the younger demographics. While 20 percent of 18 to 34 year olds said smartwatches are the type of wrist watch they wear most often, another 13 percent identified fine and fine Swiss options as their primary watch – an increase from 2015. The older consumer continues to be the sweet spot for the high-end watch market, but the younger generations are bringing new growth to the segment.

Women are also bringing growth to the high-end, luxury traditional watch market. Sales of women's watch models priced at $5,000 or more grew 8 percent in the 12 months ending June 2019, exceeding sales of the sub-$500 segment for the first time in recent years. Overall, fashion and basic watches have not seen the same upticks in recent years as their fine and smart counterparts – preferences have evolved, particularly among the female watch consumer.

"The introduction and popularity of smartwatches has brought a mix of challenges and opportunities to the watch market, but recent gains in the luxury segment are pointing us in the direction of resurgence," said Brack. "New consumers and watch-wearing behaviors are paving a path for reinvention across the marketplace." Read latest news here.

Methodology
How Watch Customers Tick – from Smart to Luxury provides a unique view into the U.S. watch marketplace and consumer behavior, helping to understand the specific target audiences across all segments – from new technology to timeless value. This report combines a range of NPD's data assets, including NPD's Retail Tracking Service (point-of-sale) data, Connected Intelligence® data, and Checkout e-commerce data, as well as insights from NPD's strategic partner, CivicScience. Other public and private information also factored into the report's development.
