Large-Scale Study Identifies Shared Genetic Architecture for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Diagnosis

In the largest genetic analysis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) performed to date, an international consortium, including researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, conducted a whole genome association study to identify common genetic architecture for different diagnostic criteria used to define the syndrome. The results are available online in the December 19 issue of the journal PLOS Genetics.

PCOS is among the most common endocrine disorders in reproductive-age women; it is a leading cause of infertility and type 2 diabetes. The origin of PCOS is unknown. It is currently diagnosed based on different sets of clinical criteria, which is controversial and possibly less accurate.

The researchers explored the genetic basis of PCOS by conducting a meta-analysis of seven whole-genome association studies involving more than 10,000 women with PCOS and 100,000 controls of European ancestry. These studies included 2,540 patients diagnosed using the National Institutes of Health criteria (high testosterone and irregular menstrual cycles); 2,669 patients using the Rotterdam criteria (high egg production); and 5,184 self-reported cases from the personal genetics company 23andMe. Read all the latest news.

With the benefit of this sample size, researchers were able to identify 14 gene variants that were associated with PCOS, including three that were identified for the first time. All the new genetic variants plausibly linked to both metabolic and reproductive features of PCOS.

"One of our most important findings is simply that all the fighting that goes on in the field over which diagnostic criteria to use is unnecessary," said Andrea Dunaif, MD, Chief of the Hilda and J. Lester Gabrilove Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Bone Disease at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and one of the senior authors of the study. "We can be pretty broad in our diagnosis with the criteria we have and be assured we are going to find the same genetic forms of PCOS."

Additional analyses provided further insight into the biology of PCOS. There was evidence that the genetic pathways identified in this study are also linked to other conditions, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, menopause, and depression. In addition, the researchers found for the first time that there are some links to male pattern baldness. The association between PCOS and male-pattern balding is particularly intriguing since it is the first genetic evidence for shared disease biology in men. The genetic link with depression supports epidemiologic studies that have found an increased risk for depression in women with PCOS.

"This study also indicates the enormous power of genome-wide association studies to provide insight into the disease. For the first time, we're making real progress on understanding the causal pathways leading to PCOS and the diseases that are genetically related to it," added Dr. Dunaif, an international authority on the disease.

Ultimately, Dr. Dunaif hopes that these biologic insights will enable the development of novel therapies for PCOS.

This work was developed through the international collaboration among 50 institutions. The International PCOS Consortium received funding from a number of organizations, including the National Institutes of Health, European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program and National Institute of Health Research Biomedical Researcher Centre.

Additionally, the kits include a modified map of the Aquarium that indicates "headphone zones," as well as areas with a more calm and secure atmosphere. The kits can be checked out at the Aquarium's Information Desk located just inside the main entrance.

"Our organization prides itself on engaging our audiences to connect them to water, wildlife and wild places," said Brian Thill, South Carolina Aquarium director of education. "We are thrilled to lead the way and to implement this national program to provide the best visitor experience possible to individuals and families that visit the South Carolina Aquarium."

Sensory sensitivities or challenges with sensory regulation are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and other similar conditions. Out Now: GATTUSO, “I Will Play” (T&T)

Captivating. Memorable. Uplifting. GATTUSO is the name on every music-lover's playlist and his latest song, "I Will Play" (T&T), is out now.

With vocal hooks and a strong melody, "I Will Play" is a song born ready for radio. From the depths of his earlier depression to the highs of his artistic achievements today, GATTUSO recounts his journey as a music producer in this song. Read latest news here.

"People always talking 'bout me / People like to see me down / Even though they don't even know me / My name is all around this town."

Supported by the key tastemakers at Spotify, SiriusXM Radio and the top music blogs – including EDM.com, EDMTunes.com, EDMSauce.com, RaverMag.com, ThatDrop.com, YourEDM.com and many others – "I Will Play" is a flawless summertime tune that electronic dance music-lovers will embrace. GATTUSO's pristine music production and contagious vocal melody are only part of the song's allure; what really sets it apart is the electric guitar riff that makes its appearance during the chorus. It's this guitar riff that lingers with the listener long after the song leaves the air. The chorus positively soars, with its feel-good, pop-leaning vibe. "I Will Play" simply swells. A dash of acoustic violin enters on the second bridge, bringing the song and its lyrics fully into the light. In a climate where meanness in politics and daily life has come to seem ordinary, "I Will Play" is a song about overcoming loneliness and persevering against all odds to achieve one's goals. "I Will Play" is an ode to self-acceptance, for it's not until we learn to love ourselves that we can truly be worthy of being loved.

About GATTUSO

GATTUSO is Israeli DJ/producer, Reem Taoz, currently based in New York City. Long a lover of high-quality electronic dance music, Taoz always knew he wanted to become an artist. Spending countless hours in nightclubs and music festivals where he soaked-up the sounds that moved the dancefloors, Taoz's days were filled listening to FM radio. Music seeped into his pores until its very essence drove him to create music himself.

With a tireless work ethic, masculine good-looks and an intoxicating charisma, GATTUSO has rapidly made a name for himself on the EDM/pop music scene. His first big single was "Who We Are" featuring Myah, self-released in the summer of 2018. That infectiously catchy song quickly took over the FM radio airwaves with airplay on the "Remix Top30 Countdown" (iHeartRadio), KLUC-FM Radio Las Vegas, "Groove Radio" (120 countries), Dance Factory Radio Chicago, WPRO-FM Radio Boston/Providence and on many other radio stations. "Who We Are" also achieved recognition on Apple Music's "Top 50 Global Hit Songs" within a few weeks of the single's initial release. The follow-up single to "Who We Are" was a progressive-house music banger, "Dance Stay High" featuring Lorensa. ‎That song won over many house music-lovers and it was added to YouTube's "Top 50 Future House" channel in late-2018.

"Push The Reds" is GATTUSO's popular weekly mixshow currently airing on Dash Radio's "ElectroCity" channel. GATTUSO‎ ‎has earned highly coveted positions on the top Spotify playlists, "Mint" ("‎Who We Are," with over 3 million streams to date), and "Rising Dance" ("Dance Stay High"), driving his already high social media metrics ever higher. The third release from GATTUSO was "Easy Boy," an underground club track. The fourth and latest release from GATTUSO is "I Will Play" featuring the vocals of Jack Wilby, another pop sensation. For GATTUSO, 2019 looks bright and there's no stopping him.

FirstService Residential Dallas and Fort Worth Offices Join Forces to Donate Over 100 Toys to Toys for Tots

Just in time for the holidays, FirstService Residential associates in Dallas and Fort Worth offices collected over 100 toys for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. Items will be distributed to families in need throughout Dallas/Fort Worth. Through this annual initiative, FirstService Residential helps further the mission of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation: to provide a tangible sign of hope to disadvantaged children at Christmas.

Toys for Tots Drive at FirstService Residential kicked off on "Giving Tuesday" this year. Large donation bins wrapped like Christmas presents were set up throughout the Dallas and Fort Worth offices. Within just one week, the bins were bursting with new toys, games, arts/crafts, books and school supplies contributed by associates.

Toys were then transported to a collection event with U.S. Marines at Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, TX, and to the Disney Store, which matched each donation with $5 for Toys for Tots.

"Being genuinely helpful in serving our communities is a core value here at FirstService Residential," explains Mira Roxanne Baker, Manager of Communications and Culture and leader of the Toys for Tots drive in Dallas. "Serving our communities means uniting all local community members in a common cause."

Seven million children had a brighter holiday season this year because of the 18 million toys distributed by the Marine Toys for Tots Program. FirstService Residential associates plan to continue helping U.S. Marine Corps spread Christmas cheer to local families in need for years to come.
