South Carolina Aquarium Becomes First Facility in S.C. to be Certified as Sensory-inclusive by KultureCity

The South Carolina Aquarium has partnered with KultureCity, an organization dedicated to creating inclusion and acceptance for all individuals with unique abilities, to become the first organization to be certified as sensory-inclusive through their program in the state of South Carolina. This new certification will promote an accommodating and positive experience for all Aquarium guests by preparing Aquarium staff and volunteers to connect visitors of all abilities to water, wildlife and wild places. South Carolina Aquarium staff were certified through a training led by a KultureCity representative. The certification process included in-depth training (both in-person and online) to enable staff members to interact with guests with sensory sensitivities. Sensory kits, equipped with noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, and verbal cue cards, are now available to Aquarium guests for use during their visit. Additionally, the kits include a modified map of the Aquarium that indicates "headphone zones," as well as areas with a more calm and secure atmosphere. The kits can be checked out at the Aquarium's Information Desk located just inside the main entrance.

"Our organization prides itself on engaging our audiences to connect them to water, wildlife and wild places," said Brian Thill, South Carolina Aquarium director of education. "We are thrilled to lead the way and to implement this national program to provide the best visitor experience possible to individuals and families that visit the South Carolina Aquarium."

Sensory sensitivities or challenges with sensory regulation are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and other similar conditions. KultureCity has certified more than 130 facilities nationwide, helping each destination become more welcoming of guests with sensory sensitivities by promoting and teaching sensory inclusion for all ages.

FirstService Residential Dallas and Fort Worth Offices Join Forces to Donate Over 100 Toys to Toys for Tots

Just in time for the holidays, FirstService Residential associates in Dallas and Fort Worth offices collected over 100 toys for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. Items will be distributed to families in need throughout Dallas/Fort Worth. Through this annual initiative, FirstService Residential helps further the mission of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation: to provide a tangible sign of hope to disadvantaged children at Christmas.

Toys for Tots Drive at FirstService Residential kicked off on "Giving Tuesday" this year. Large donation bins wrapped like Christmas presents were set up throughout the Dallas and Fort Worth offices. Within just one week, the bins were bursting with new toys, games, arts/crafts, books and school supplies contributed by associates.

Toys were then transported to a collection event with U.S. Marines at Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, TX, and to the Disney Store, which matched each donation with $5 for Toys for Tots.

Seven million children had a brighter holiday season this year because of the 18 million toys distributed by the Marine Toys for Tots Program. FirstService Residential associates plan to continue helping U.S. Marine Corps spread Christmas cheer to local families in need for years to come.

Lona Hankins Joins HNTB as Project Director Serving Gulf Coast

Lona Hankins joined HNTB Corporation as project director in New Orleans, as part of the firm's Gulf Coast District. Hankins is responsible for delivering large-scale, complex infrastructure programs using her extensive industry network; comprehensive understanding of federal agencies including securing funding and associated regulations; program controls and project management.

Hankins has 30 years of industry experience spanning engineering, program management and leading capital improvement projects. In a previous position, she was responsible for executing one of the largest post-Hurricane Katrina recovery programs which included more than 240 projects with a construction value in excess of $2 billion.

While in the private sector, she managed worked between Baton Rouge and New Orleans on design, procurement and installation of numerous business and environmental projects ranging between $25 million and $200 million.

"Lona is a recognized industry leader whose decades of work in both the public and private sectors enable her to be a highly effective program manager," said Gen. John Basilica, Jr., HNTB Gulf Coast District leader and vice president. Prior to joining HNTB, Hankins served as executive director, capital projects for the Recovery School District, a statewide school district managed by the Louisiana Department of Education. Hankins earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College.
