A New App That Allows Infant Formula to be Mixed and Ready for Children in No Time, Saving Time, Energy and Water

Ever been really tired waking up late at night and having to mix the infant formula? Boiling water for it to be non-contaminated? Waiting for it to cool down or trying to cool it down under cold running water? Takes forever, right? Well, one family father, Micael Törnblom, took his idea to another father, Peter Loven, who stands behind the company App4Life, and together they made a brand-new app called BabyFormula on the App Store. This app will save time, water and energy, letting people mix that water and achieve the right temperature within seconds. Especially in some countries where water is not drinkable from the tap, it is even more important to boil it so as not to be contaminated. An easy way to do it would be to boil water the day before, put it in the fridge and use it the next day. Boil new water, and together with the cooled-down water in the fridge, use the app and make infant formula milk in no time. First step is to choose a desired temperature. Then choose the volume, temperature of the cold and hot water, and then the app will give the mixture to use to achieve the desired temperature. It is very easy to use with buttons and sliders.

Peter says that his philosophy with apps is to make them "user friendly" and easy to understand. He got a lot of nice publicity for his app Fly4Life – an app for people who have a fear of flying – to be just that simple and easy to understand for normal people in everyday life. "I have helped a lot of people who have a fear of flying and got many, many questions and thoughts through the email function in the app, which helps me make the app better. Actually, my whole idea with my company's name was to make apps for life, so if I had good sales, the company could give money away for good reasons. My family and I have been sponsoring a child in Ethiopia for more than 10 years. Today, she studies at the university in Addis Abeba. Fantastic story, and it cost us not more than a few bucks a week. Unfortunately, it is hard competition selling apps, so that is not the case yet, but I am working hard on it. I believe people and companies really could make a difference just by helping out a little bit. I hope this app will be of some success so I can reach my goal of helping other people as well," Peter says. Read related news now.

Payment to Poor Families Increases Voter Turnout Among Their Children

For nearly 50 years, Americans have been eligible to vote starting at age 18. Yet the nation's youngest voters have hardly flocked to the polls. Citizens 18 to 29 routinely post the lowest turnout among all age groups, according to the United States Election Project.

And because poor Americans vote at a lower rate than more affluent citizens, young people from impoverished families are even less likely to vote than the wealthier members of their age cohort.

A new paper co-authored by a Johns Hopkins Carey Business School researcher points to a possible way to raise the numbers. Voting increased among young people from lower socio-economic backgrounds after their families began receiving regular disbursements of unearned income, the study says.

Annual payments of a few thousand dollars per household led to increased voter turnout of between 8 and 20 percent among the young people in the study, over a period of about 10 years.

"For those in their formative years who haven't completed high school, household income matters a lot in determining whether or not they become active voters," says economist Emilia Simeonova, an associate professor at the Carey Business School.

"What's more, we saw that the impact of the unearned income on youth voting was more pronounced among those who had the lowest household incomes at the time the disbursements started," she adds.

The researchers based their paper on data from the Great Smoky Mountains Survey (GSMS), a longitudinal study launched in 1993, as well as from public voting records. Initiated by Duke University and the state of North Carolina, the GSMS set out to examine the psychological traits of 1,420 poor children in western North Carolina, including several hundred children in the Native American Cherokee tribe. Read news here.

As it happened, about four years into the study, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians opened a casino in the survey zone and started designating half of the profits as extra cash income for adult members of the tribe.

Simeonova and her colleagues focused on the effects of this new yearly income ― about $4,700 per household, or approximately 25 percent of the average Native American family's annual earnings.

At the start of the payments, the children in the GSMS were 13 to 17 years old. The researchers learned that once the children reached voting age, the youngest ones ― those with the longest exposure to the additional income ― had the highest rate of turnout at the polls.

"That certainly helps underscore our view that extra income can encourage civic activity among children from poor families," says Simeonova.

The voting patterns of the adults in the GSMS, on the other hand, did not change after the income disbursements started. "It appears that adult voting patterns are locked-in and unaffected by changes in income that occur later in their lives," Simeonova says.

Increased voting among the youths might be attributed to their being able to finish high school on time, and to their families' being able to avoid relocation, thanks to the extra income, the researchers say. Such factors might have contributed to the young people's "social capital," meaning they felt more committed to their communities and more likely to engage in civic activity.

"Regardless of the exact reasons, the additional income narrowed the turnout gap between children from disadvantaged families and their better-off peers," says Simeonova. "From this, we see the potential long-term benefit that, as more people from lower-income groups vote, their views and their concerns will attract more attention from elected officials." Read related news here.

The study, "Family Income and the Intergenerational Transmission of Voting Behavior: Evidence from an Income Intervention," has appeared as a working paper on the website of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Along with Simeonova of Johns Hopkins, the authors are Associate Professor Randall Akee of the University of California, Los Angeles; Professor William Copeland and Professor E. Jane Costello, both of Duke; and Assistant Professor John Holbein of Brigham Young University.

This same group of researchers, minus Holbein, previously wrote a paper showing that the cash disbursements significantly improved the psychological well-being of adolescent children in the GSMS.

"There may be a broader effect from these disbursements than was thought before," says Simeonova. "Our new study suggests that social policies aimed at reducing economic disadvantage may also help improve voter turnout in future generations."

STRmix™ Use Leads to Indiana Murder Conviction

STRmix™ – the sophisticated forensic software used to resolve mixed DNA profiles previously thought to be too complex to interpret – has been used to convict 33-year-old Keith Ivory in the June 2016 shooting death of Bethel Smallwood in South Bend, Indiana.

Smallwood was found deceased with multiple gunshot wounds inside a vehicle parked in front of a South Bend restaurant on June 24, 2016.

While the defense argued that there were no eyewitnesses who could positively identify Ivory as the shooter, the jury found in favor of the prosecution, which had presented security camera footage showing Ivory in the area both before and after the shooting.

The prosecution also relied on the testimony of several jail informants to whom Ivory had allegedly confessed, as well as on the admissibility of DNA evidence produced through the use of STRmix™.

Judge John Marnocha in the St. Joseph Superior Court (Case No. 71-DM153073) rejected a defense motion that claimed STRmix™ had failed to satisfy the Daubert standard for reliability. Daubert is used to assess whether an expert's scientific testimony is based on reasoning or methodology that is scientifically valid and can properly be applied to the facts at issue. Factors considered in determining the validity of a methodology include whether it has been subjected to rigorous testing and validation; is published and peer reviewed; and generally accepted in the scientific community, as well as in federal and state courts throughout the U.S.

STRmix™ was developed by John Buckleton, DSc, FRSNZ, and Jo-Anne Bright of the New Zealand Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR), and Duncan Taylor from Forensic Science South Australia (FSSA).

Thirty-six U.S. labs now routinely use STRmix™ to resolve DNA profiles. This includes everything from federal agencies such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the FBI to state and local agencies. STRmix™ is also in various stages of installation, validation, and training in more than 50 other U.S. labs.

To date, there have been at least 24 successful admissibility hearings for STRmix™ in the U.S., while DNA evidence interpreted with STRmix™ has been successfully used in numerous court cases.

Internationally, STRmix™ has been used in casework since 2012. Currently in use in 14 labs in Australia, New Zealand, England, Scotland, Ireland, and Canada, STRmix™ has been used to interpret DNA evidence in more than 100,000 cases.

A new version of STRmix™, STRmix™ v2.6, recently was introduced. The new version features a user interface that has been completely redeveloped and refreshed, providing users with vastly improved usability and workflow. Version 2.6 also enables a range of contributors to be entered when performing a deconvolution, and any type of stutter to be added and configured.

Kavi Global Launches Data Science Jump-start Program

With significant advancements in Data Science technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning & Deep Learning, opportunities are aplenty to apply them in creating real business edge. However, a recent study* by MIT Sloan has shown that only 23% of the businesses, which participated in the study, have adopted any level of machine learning automation and among them, only 5% are using it as required.

Among the multiple reasons behind this, a major one is the inability to quickly translate ideas into results - needed for executive buy-in, right funding and do large scale implementations. Kavi Global, the new age Data Analytics outfit specializing in Data Engineering & Data Science has identified ways to quicken this journey from ideas to results. They have packaged this solution-set into what they call as the "Data Science Jump-start Program". Kavi Global is located just outside of Chicago. They are a 10-year old boutique with global aspirations.

ABOUT THE JUMP-START PROGRAM

"Our jump-start program is collaboration and a partnership. Clients bring to the table a specific idea or use case, data and the subject matter expertise. We bring to the table our data science acumen, process capabilities, infrastructure, software and project management skills. The program's process has been inspired by our wealth of experience in this area, and has been optimized for flexibility, research and experimentation, while delivering quick results. Typical deliverables include the algorithms, results, and the road map for production implementation. A typical engagement is about 3 months long and costs about $150K. We have got this down to a Data Science Factory," observes Vijitha Kaduwela, Founder & CEO of Kavi Global, when quizzed about the Program.

So, has the Jump-start Program helped clients in real-time?

"Yes, it has. In fact, it is the success of this approach that has motivated us to streamline it further and present it as the 'Jump-start Program,'" observes Rajesh Inbasekaran, VP of R&D, Kavi Global. "We have seen it helping across projects - in reducing number of sensors in industrial pipelines; in analyzing medical videos and improving process efficiency; in detecting pharmacy prescription fraud and so on - in record time frames. This proof of the pudding is already there, and it is here to stay and help clients accelerate adoption."

Kavi Global is currently offering, the assessment stage of the jump-start program at no cost, for qualifying clients. For more information: https://www.kaviglobal.com/services/implementation/data-science-services/jumpstart-program/

My First Lab's history is rooted in medical manufacturing. After making professional laboratory microscopes for nearly a decade, C & A Scientific applied their expertise towards making a children's microscope that had the same optical quality but was more affordable, more portable, and had kid-friendly functionality. Their goal was to encourage children to see science, not as homework or something done in a classroom, but to take their microscope into their backyards, explore their surroundings and develop a deeper appreciation and stronger interest in science.

Giving children the tools to pursue science on their terms will allow for greater engagement in education, and a better outlook for their futures. Thank you to Oppenheim Toy Portfolio and My First Lab for understanding this relationship and bringing attention to toys that make a better world for our children.
