River + Wolf, an award-winning brand naming and writing agency, announces the recent launch of NOD (Names of Distinction), an online gallery of exceptional company and product names. Each month, NOD will showcase 12 names from a different industry or category. The first exhibition features a collection of shade names along with companies that produce shades for nail polish, eye shadow, and foundation.
River + Wolf created NOD to bring awareness to the importance of naming, to celebrate exceptional names, and to inspire founders or marketing executives tasked with the job of developing a company or product name. A name is the foundation of a brand, but, typically, naming does not receive much industry attention. It is easy to find galleries and marketing award programs highlighting logos, websites, and advertising campaigns, but rarely do you see a roundup of inspired brand names. Names are the unsung heroes of branding, and River + Wolf intends to change that.

NOD will feature a new themed collection of names each month. To brighten the dreariness of January, River + Wolf chose to explore the colorful world of nail polish, eye shadow and foundation shade names, and the companies that create them. This inaugural exhibition consists of names ranging from the elegant and edgy to the poetic and playful.

"At River + Wolf, we love great brand names—not only our own, but also those created by marketing execs, company founders, and agency colleagues," says Margaret Wolfson, founder and Chief Creative of River + Wolf. "We created the monthly NOD exhibition to celebrate these magnificent monikers and, more broadly, the art of brand naming. We hope NOD will shine a light on the importance of a quality name and provoke thought and discussion as gallery visitors consider what makes an outstanding name."
To determine which names to honor, Wolfson and her team reviewed hundreds of products and companies, looking for those rare names that paint vivid pictures in the mind and/or evoke a story or bit of mystery. "There are so many great names out there—choosing a handful isn't easy," Wolfson said. "To limit our choices and give a boost to newer brands we focused on products and companies launched within the last 10 years."
One of the names showcased in January is Scuba, a nail polish shade by JINsoon. "The name evokes rich teal in a creative and powerful way," Wolfson said. "It instantly immerses you in the sea." Other January honorees include Scattered Light, a glittery eye shadow shade by Hourglass Cosmetics; Clay Play, an eye and cheek palette of earth-tones by Tarte; and Dark Fiction, a dark red-brown lipstick shade by Lancôme. Each exhibition will also include a companion blog article on the River + Wolf website that describes what makes the names so great.
Adding to the fun, River + Wolf plans to tie each collection to something unique about the month. In February, NOD will highlight names of perfumes, a tribute to Valentine's Day. In March, the gallery will exhibit names of brands geared towards women, in celebration of International Women's Day. More info here.
