The University of the Arts uses MobileUp Software to Create a Custom App for Student Engagement

The University of the Arts (UArts), a customer of MobileUp Software, has transitioned a portion of its student engagement efforts to a custom app to increase and measure student participation in campus activities.

The UArts app is part of a larger mobile technology movement many schools, associations, and corporations are using to engage their constituents who consider smartphones to be their primary method of communication.

Studies suggest at least 75 percent of college students consider themselves dependent on smartphones and one in five describe themselves as "lost" without a mobile device.

Recognizing this trend, the UArts student services department turned to MobileUp Software last fall for a custom app that could be used to manage a campus-wide orientation and celebration called UArts Day and year-round student engagement activities once UArts Day concluded.

For UArts Day, the app was populated with a list of 50 area locations near the school's Philadelphia-based campus with descriptions and directions. Students were then able to use the app to document their visits to the areas as "completions" by taking a photo of the landmark or a selfie at the location.

The app also featured gamification and social elements by tracking each student's progress through a leaderboard and the ability to see other students' event completions through a scrollable photo-based highlight reel.

Besides UArts Day, the app provides school event calendars, dining menus, methods for finding and joining student clubs, directories, and other information that helps the school's 1,800 students engage with campus activities.

"Our students have become more informed and we have seen an increase in engagement across the board including new student organization start-ups and attendance in student activities events," said Sara Kupferer, Assistant Vice President for Student Services at UArts. "We also have generated a great deal of feedback from students that we were not receiving before we had the app in place."
