Siborg Systems Inc. Featured in Manufacturing Today; Promotional Sale on LCR-Reader Devices

In the newest volume of Manufacturing Today, Siborg Systems Inc. interviewed with Kat Zeman about the future of Siborg, with focus on the LCR-Reader and their software division. Michael Obrecht, the director of Siborg, gave insight into a new LCR-Reader model that is being released in 2018 and mentioned how the company is refocusing on their MicroTec software.

LCR-Reader is a handheld LCR- and ESR- meter with a 0.5% basic accuracy and high-speed while testing components. The lightweight device quickly determines the type of component and best test parameters before measuring. All measurement values, including main impedance value, secondary values such as the ESR, component type and test frequency are instantly displayed on the bright OLED screen in the device. The LCR-Reader comes with an NIST traceable calibration certificate, and gold-plated tweezer tips that can grasp any component, including those already mounted on crowded PCBs.

Michael Obrecht speaks of a new model that will be available in the summer of 2018 as a refined version of the LCR-Reader; "It will be a much more powerful multimeter, less bulky and more fine tuned. We have improved on the LCR-Reader's appearance, performance and functionality." Obrecht goes on to mention that the newer model will have a higher price than the recently released LCR-Reader-MP, but will have better functionality, including a three-volt LED test, and one-volt signal component testing for ceramic capacitors. The device is also boasting a lower signal-to-noise ratio which improves the accuracy while testing lower value capacitance and inductances.

As for Siborg's software division, the article outlines that Siborg is starting to refocus on the software side of things, including some new ideas for very fast software tools for thermal design. "We want to enhance the functionality of MicroTec including the thermal analysis built into the semiconductor device simulator. It's sold to a lot of educational markets and to semiconductor manufacturers."

MicroTec is an easy-to-use semiconductor process and device simulator that is computationally extensive for simulations for power semiconductor devices with large dimensions or solar cells. It is also particularly useful for devices built with SiC and other wide band gap material. The software was used by more than 100 universities in 25 countries, and more than 35 companies worldwide. MicroTec's staying power comes from the ability to run on a few megabytes of RAM and by being a faster and more robust program than other similar programs. Read news here.

MicroTec includes 3 main software tools; SiDif for 2-D simulation of implantation, diffusion and oxidation; SemSim for steady-state 2-D simulation and SibGraf for 1-D and 2-D graphics.
Obrecht mentions that the ability to quickly customize the MicroTec software is a main selling point, especially for smaller companies "Maybe our software can do 90% of what they want. Well, we can quickly do modification to the software and that's very important to them. Plus, we offer 24/7 support, which is much higher than competitors. We serve pretty much anybody that does work on electronic circuit boards; it's a very wide community."

Siborg is offering a sale on devices in their online store, including LCR-Reader, LCR-Reader-MP and Smart Tweezers models. The Smart Tweezers ST5S-BT2 is a Bluetooth enabled model that can send and receive data from a virtual connection. When connected to receiver software, the Bluetooth device is able to instantly send a chain of measurement values, which can be save for later processing. The ability to automatically remotely record measurement values is exceptionally helpful for incoming quality control.

Siborg also offers task kits, which include a device and accessories for a discounted price. The LCR-Reader Online Store also has complimentary tools for SMT, including the LCR-Reader/Smart Tweezers Kelvin Probe Connector the turns any LCR-Reader or Smart Tweezers model into a full probe station. The kit comes with 5 different attachments (2 sizes of pin-probes, spade connector, alligator clips, and multimeter jack plugs) and allows the device to measure components that wouldn't normally fit between the tweezers' probes. When used with the Oscilloscope mode on LCR-Reader-MP, the Kelvin Probe Connector can measure wave-forms at various nodes on a PCB.

Handy Reference List of Facts from Empty Tomb, inc. Church Giving Research

Here are a few facts from empty tomb, inc.'s series, The State of Church Giving, published annually by the Champaign, Illinois, Christian research and service organization. Read all the latest news.

Fact 1.    Church member giving was higher in the depth of the Great Depression than in 2015. The year 1933 was the depth of the Great Depression, with the lowest per capita income from 1921 through the present. In 1933, churches received 3.2% of their members' incomes. In 2015, churches received 2.2% of their members' incomes. Meanwhile, U.S. per capita Disposable (after-tax) Personal Income had increased 660% in inflation-adjusted dollars, from $5,034 in 1933 to $38,237 in 2015.

Fact 2.    Churches were keeping more of their donations for internal expenses in 2015 compared to 1968. When a church receives contributions from members, those Total Contributions dollars are generally divided into two categories. Congregational Finances pays for the internal expenses of the congregations. Benevolences refers to money spent beyond the congregation, whether sent on to the denomination or spent on mission by the congregation. In 1968, local churches spent 21% on Benevolences, and 79% on Congregational Finances. In 2015, churches spent 16% on Benevolences, and 84% on Congregational Finances.

Fact 3.    Church member giving as a percent of income has been in decline since at least 1968. In 1968, on average, church members gave 3.02% of their incomes to their churches. In 2015, the amount was 2.17%.

Fact 4.    The declining trend in per member giving as a percent of income to churches is evident in Evangelical as well as Mainline Protestant congregations. Although members of Evangelical churches continued to give a larger portion of income to their churches in 2015 than did members of Mainline Protestant churches, the rate of decline in giving as a percent of income was more pronounced in Evangelical churches than in Mainline churches between 1968 and 2015.

Fact 5.    Congregations sent a smaller portion of Total Contributions to their denominations for global missions in 2015 than in 1925. Congregations in a group of eight denominations spent an average of seven cents of each dollar on denominational global missions in 1925. In 2015, congregations in these eight denominations spent an average of two cents of each dollar of Total Contributions on denominational global missions. When the 2015 group was broadened to include 26 denominations, the average amount of each Total Contributions dollar spent on denominational global missions remained at two cents.

Fact 6.    The Under-25 age group apparently learns giving in a religious context. In The State of Church Giving series, empty tomb analyzes data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey. A finding that has been consistent for the past several years is that the Under-25 age group donates the smallest portion of their income. However, of the amount given by the Under-25 cohort, the large majority of their giving is directed to the category of "church, religious organizations." For example, in 2015, the portion of giving by the Under-25 group was 74% to "church, religious organizations." As people age, they also add on gifts to "charities and other organizations" and "educational institutions." However, gifts to "church, religious organizations" continue to attract the largest portion of the charitable gifts in every age group.

Fact 7.    Church members in the U.S. control, through their incomes, the equivalent of the third largest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the world. In 2014, the estimated total income of church members in the U.S. was $7.7 trillion dollars. The amount is behind only the $19 trillion GDP of the entire United States in 2014, and the $12 trillion GDP of China in 2014.

Fact 8.    Potential giving among church members in the U.S. is in the billions of dollars. If native-born church members in the U.S. gave at the same level as foreign-born residents in the U.S. send to their home countries in remittances, the increased amount in church member giving in 2015 would have been $422 billion.

These and other findings are available in The State of Church Giving through 2015: Understanding the Times (Champaign, IL: empty tomb, inc., 2017). The book is the 27th edition in the series. The book is available through Wipf and Stock Customer Service by phone at 541-344-1528 or orders(at)wipfandstock.com, or through amazon.com.

The Awkward Teenage Years…And Beyond: Study Reveals That a Lack of Tact is Worse Than a Lack of Popularity

As if fitting in wasn't hard enough, with the graceless onslaught of puberty, hormones, and pimples. Add social awkwardness to the mix and things just seem to go from cute and kooky to humiliating – and this pattern can continue into adulthood. Recent research from PsychTests reveals, however, that learning a crucial social skill – tact – can make a major difference in a person's life satisfaction, even if they aren't very high on the social ladder.

Collecting data from 1,548 people of all ages who took their Big Five Personality Test, researchers compared four distinct groups:

According to PsychTests study, these four groups differed in a number of areas, including their personality, mental health, social/relationships skills, and values:

Have seen a therapist in the last 2 years:

Don't cope well with stress:

Don't cope well with change:

"Drama Queens":

Pushy:

Good self-esteem:

Outspoken and opinionated:

Easy to talk to:

Make friends easily:

Prefer to hang out with people from their own culture/of their own ethnicity:

Get into conflicts/arguments on a weekly basis:

Believe that lying in relationships (to friends, family, partner) is fine:

Keep promises:

Go out of their way to better themselves:

Self-absorbed:

"Tact doesn't just contribute to better interactions and relationships," explains Dr. Jerabek, president of PsychTests. "If you're tactful, you're more likely to get along with people and they with you – which means that when you need social support to get through a difficult time in your life, you'll at least have a few people to turn to. This is why the two tactful groups seemed to fare better in terms of their emotional health. Yes, being popular means your social network is wider, but if you're a nice person, you're more likely to draw other nice people to you. In this day and age of 'trolling', where people feel free to voice hatred and venomous insults from behind the safety of their computer screens, it's refreshing to know that for many people, tact is still considered important."
