Cape Cod Retreat Center Welcomes Nature Based & Outdoor Environmental Education Interest Groups

Craigville Retreat Center is a retreat center in the heart of Cape Cod managed by UCCR. Located in the heart of an environmentally significant area with amazing birding and nature activities, as well as pristine beaches and recreational opportunities, Craigville Retreat is a photographer and nature-lover's dream. Hosting groups of all sizes in its clean, comfortable accommodations and serving a customized menu, the Center offers multiple lodging options and indoor/outdoor meeting areas for all seasons. Small groups may also enjoy the ability to cook their own meals if they choose.

The Craigville Community recently announced their goal of becoming 100% sustainable to support the natural waters, wildlife and community and is moving forward with this exciting plan. "Because our community partners are committed to the health and restoration of local habitat, and we are a net-zero kitchen waste retreat center, we want to attract groups to stay with us that value our efforts to be 'green'." says Matthew CastleMan, retreat center director. This means that all waste produced will be either composted or recycled, with the intention to reduce the creation of any actual waste. Buying in bulk, reducing non-recyclable packaging, and avoiding single use plastics is also a high priority. Craigville Retreat Center is a leader in modeling best ways for waste reduction, and environmentally sustainable business practices for the rest of the surrounding village. Read here.

Craigville Retreat is part of a community that includes wonderful walking trails through the quaint village and around the community green. The Red Lily Pond, adjacent to the dining facility, is an inviting place to take meals outdoors on the banks of the pond, which features marshlands with a lovely birdwatching area, a short walk through the woods near historic Craigville Tabernacle, and the beach a quick walk down the hill. Other outdoor opportunities include observing the historic herring run, checking out turtles in the lily pond and sunset views that makes for a wonderful and relaxing stay at Craigville Retreat for any group.

Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) 2020 conference gathering 1.6K attendees

Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) is hosting its seventh annual conference, March 13-14, at the Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center in Aurora, Colorado. The event supports its mission to recruit, retain, and advance women in cybersecurity.

The WiCyS conference will bring together more than 1,600 women and allies in cybersecurity from industry, academia, government, nonprofits and research to share their knowledge and expertise while networking and mentoring. WiCyS ensures that half of conference attendees are female cybersecurity students, who earned WiCyS scholarships funded by conference sponsors and strategic partners, or are sponsored by their institution to attend. The other half represents educators and professionals from both public and private sectors.

Several cybersecurity experts will be featured at the conference, including keynotes Gretchen Block, vice president, Optum Global Technology Enterprise Risk Assessment Program; Sandra McLeod, director of Advanced Security Initiatives Group at Cisco Systems; and Sid Sidhu, lead in Production Engineering at Facebook.

Additionally, this year's event consists of over 400 volunteers, 150 recruiters, more than 100 sponsors, 80 veterans, 20 active military attendees and 15 community collaborators. WiCyS issued 750 student scholarships, 130 travel stipends, 67 faculty grants and 26 Veteran Fellowship Awards. The conference will have 16 workshops, 55 technical presentations, Birds of a Feather sessions, lightning talks, panel discussions, student research poster sessions, and National Cyber League capture-the-flag game/competition.

Cybersecurity Ventures forecasted 3.5 million cybersecurity job openings by 2021, and noted women only make up 20% of the cybersecurity workforce. WiCyS is working diligently to increase that percentage through various initiatives in collaboration with its strategic partners.

Dr. Ambareen Siraj, from Tennessee Tech University, founded WiCyS originally as a National Science Foundation project in 2013. In 2018, it transitioned into a nonprofit organization and now has over 6,000 members. The mission of WiCyS remains strong because of its inclusive and energetic community. WiCyS members are the driving force in bringing the WiCyS message from a national to a local level thanks to 90 student chapters, 17 professional affiliates, and many speakers, mentors, allies and veterans in the WiCyS community.

"It's awe inspiring to be at the WiCyS conference each year and see women connect with each other, be inspired by each other and guide each other," said Dr. Janell Straach, WiCyS chair of the board. "The conference is all about community because it is the community."

High level conference sponsors include VIPs Cisco, Facebook and Optum; Premium sponsors AWS, Google, Mastercard, Raytheon, State Farm, and Verizon; and Diamond sponsors Adobe, Bank of America, Carnegie Mellon University, CEROC at Tennessee Tech, CSSIA, CyberProof, Dakota State University, DENSO, IBM, Kroll, Microsoft Security, National Cyber League, Robinhood, MCS@Rice, RIT, Salesforce, Synopsys, VISA, and Walmart. View all sponsors here: https://www.wicys.org/2020-sponsors.

Journalists are invited to attend and should email info@wicys.org to request a media pass. For more information on WiCyS or the conference, visit http://www.wicys.org. Be alert to the latest news.

New Brunswick, Canada, Caters to the “Slow Travel” Mindset

Rather than a vacation filled with manic sightseeing and stressful to-do lists, more and more travelers today are slowing down to immerse themselves in a destination. The Atlantic Canada province of New Brunswick, located just north of the Maine border, offers several new experiences that allow travelers to connect with the food, community, and environment at their own relaxed pace.

Here's what's new in 2020:

Wilderness Dining

Savour the Caves – On the ocean floor at low tide, a local chef will prepare seasonal cuisine while telling stories about the culture and history of the area. The experience takes place at St. Martins Sea Caves, a section of the UNESCO Fundy Biosphere Reserve and Stonehammer UNESCO Global Geopark. Available July 6 and 7, August 3 and 4, 2020, starting at $425 CAD per person. More info here.

Cielo Oyster Experiences – In an eco-friendly exploration of Bay Saint-Simon located on the northeastern Acadian peninsula, guests will maneuver standup paddleboards to harvest, shuck, and cook oysters, while learning how to pair them with local products. The experience is available from June 21 through September 25, starting at $85 per person.

Explore By Foot

Nepisiguit Mi'gmaq Trail– The newly designated park offers a 90-mile hiking trail that follows the Nepisiguit River from the mountains of Mount Carleton Provincial Park in central New Brunswick to the ocean at Daly Point Nature Reserve in Bathurst, and is based on an ancient First Nations travel route. The park is open year-round, but ideal hiking conditions are available between June and October.

Wabanaki Tree Spirit Tour – Embark on a medicine walk through the old growth forest of Odell Park, joining Wabanaki medicine keepers to learn about the history of local plants and trees along with their use as Indigenous medicines, food and in ceremony. The tour is available year-round starting at $200 for four people. A lunch of Three Sisters Soup and Acorn Corn Bread, made with leached acorns and locally grown ancient flint corn, is available for an additional $25 per person after the tour.

Moncton Street Art Mural Walking Tour – The city of Moncton boasts over 32 large-scale contemporary murals from local and international artists, creating an outdoor gallery of street art. Travelers are guided by a curator to learn about these hidden gems on a 1.5-hour walking tour. Available on Saturdays and Sundays starting at $25 CAD per person.

Immersive History

Le Pays de la Sagouine – In a theatrical glimpse into Acadian history, actors and bilingual staff work and live in a 19th century town, allowing guests to visit and explore the music and food of the French settlers' descendants that occupied the northeastern region of North America. Performances are available throughout 2020; find a full calendar at https://www.sagouine.com/en/.
