EconoFact Awarded $50,000 Grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

EconoFact, a non-profit media initiative published by the Murrow Center for a Digital World at The Fletcher School at Tufts University, is pleased to announce that it was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The grant will be administered by Tufts University, and will help to expand the scope, exposure and distribution of its non-partisan economic analyses.

EconoFact has assembled a network of more than 90 economists across the United States to contribute their expertise on timely economic policy issues, ranging from education and immigration to criminal justice and climate change. EconoFact shares this expertise through written memos, videos, and its Data Point series of compelling statistics to make the information and ideas accessible to a general audience. Since its inception in January 2017, EconoFact has achieved more than one million page views, developing a strong following among researchers, academics, government analysts and the media. In this respect, EconoFact aligns with the Sloan Foundation's mission by serving as a resource for thought leaders, as well as the wider public, who want access to informed, expert opinion without a political slant.

"Through the leadership of Professor Michael Klein, EconoFact has demonstrated how collaboration in our community can have real-world impact on important policy discussions," said Rachel Kyte, Dean of The Fletcher School. "We are excited to have the opportunity to expand this effort thanks to the generosity of the Sloan Foundation."

EconoFact's contributors, several of whom have served in policy positions such as chief economists in the U.S. Treasury and Labor Departments, as well as in leading roles in academia, are not financially compensated. They choose to participate in the initiative out of a sense of civic responsibility and a desire for civic engagement.

"We founded EconoFact on the premise that there is both a need, and a desire, for quality, non-partisan resources that inform the public about the most important economic issues of our time," said Prof. Klein, EconoFact's Founder and Executive Editor. "We are pleased with the response to our efforts, and look forward to continuing to grow this initiative with the help of our generous supporters."

More-PDF adds PDF3D Creation for ANSYS Engineering Analysis Users

Visual Technology Services, known for PDF3D software, and engineering services company 7tech GmbH jointly announce More-PDF, a new extension plugin for ANSYS Workbench - the standard analysis platform for world-wide computer-aided engineering (CAE). The new More-PDF plugin creates multi-page templated 3D PDF documents directly from within the Workbench environment and also standalone for other post-processors. The design of More-PDF is optimal for engineering analysis reports and workflows, creating complete reports.

"The new More-PDF plugin is significant because it fulfills under-served PDF analysis reporting functions," comments DI. Christoph Schlegel, principal engineer and founder of 7tech GmbH. "PDF reports are used every day for multi-page client reports, now these can contain 3D visualizations of analysis results in context, avoiding special viewer installs. In pre-release it's already had a great reception in our analysis community."

https://jessicapressreleases.blogspot.com/2018/05/the-npd-group-reports-fragrance-trends.html

By integrating 3D PDF generation into Workbench and related post-processors, More-PDF menus provide a preview for the multi-page report or drawing page templates with visual placement of 3D viewports and legend information. For mechanical analysis the results contours are exported directly. The stand-alone menu option can be used for ANSYS CFD-PrePost (CFX, Fluent), TurboGrid mesh generation, ANSYS Electronics Desktop (Maxell and HSFF) via AVZ from ANSYS Viewer, or VRML results for pre-Workbench users including Mechanical-APDL plots.

With 5x superior file compression of 3D PDF over AVZ, reports are more easily shared, saving in document storage and transport. As illustration of superior file-compression, a typical mechanical stress result of 900 Mb may be saved to a 45 Mb ANSYS-AVZ file, while publishing to 3D PDF achieves a much smaller 9 Mb file, and viewed with a standard 3D PDF Reader. For even further file reduction, the More-PDF system can invoke a 3D mesh simplification post-process filter.

More-PDF helps engineers create complex interactive visualizations allowing review of what-if studies, query values, zoom to details, investigate detailed properties in simulation results, collaborate with peers, and achieve a deep understanding of analysis results in context of a complete report. Peers and clients are able to add mark-up comments, save and share views, while recording audit snap-shots of simulation results in the standard PDF document format.

More-PDF is available from more-pdf.com, with a free demo version planned for the ANSYS App Store.

ANSYS, ANSYS CFD, CFX, Fluent, Maxwell, HFSS, TurboGrid, AVZ and APDL, MAPDL are trademarks of Ansys Inc. Neither Visual Technology Services Ltd. or 7tech GmbH are affiliated with Ansys Inc.

Girls Inc. Releases Stronger, Smarter, Bolder: Girls Take the Lead Report — Trend Analysis of Major Factors Affecting Girls and Guidance on Nurturing the Next Generation

Girls Inc. the leading nonprofit that inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold, today released Stronger, Smarter, Bolder: Girls Take the Lead, a report on what is needed to ensure girls are prepared to succeed in leadership roles in business, politics, and their communities. The report presents both a wide-ranging analysis of the latest research on the primary factors shaping girls' lives today, and recommendations for the most crucial supports communities should focus on for girls. In a new study by the American Institutes for Research (AIR), girls who receive the supports offered by Girls Inc. have a significant advantage over their peers who do not.

While there are more women today in key leadership positions than ever before, there still exists a pervasive gender gap in top leadership. Stronger, Smarter, Bolder: Girls Take the Lead outlines four fundamental supports that Girls Inc. Has determined are universally beneficial to girls and create the conditions for girls to overcome systemic societal challenges and become strong leaders: providing mentoring relationships, encouraging girls to develop and use their voices, promoting positive self-image, and fostering intellectual confidence.

These supports help girls navigate and overcome the multifaceted, interconnected, and persistent barriers they face. The report highlights some of the most recent and significant research on girls, pointing to eleven key factors that shape their lives. The report presents a comprehensive, holistic view of the landscape in which girls in both the U.S. and Canada are growing up. The following factors are examined: physical activity, mental health, substance use, teen pregnancy, educational achievement, STEM experiences, graduation rates, juvenile justice, healthy relationships—encompassing harassment and sexual abuse, and leadership opportunities. Continue reading.

"The research shows us that Girls Inc. Is making progress on some of the toughest issues girls face—but all of us working in this field still have room to improve, especially in our work with girls of color, LBGTQ+ girls, and low-income girls. All girls deserve equity of access to wellbeing and opportunity, and we have to see the whole girl, in her context and community. That's what Girls Inc. has always done, and we believe that's a key to the success we've achieved," said Stephanie J. Hull, Ph.D., President & CEO of Girls Inc.

Recently, the American Institutes for Research completed a study designed to isolate and identify the impact of Girls Inc. On girls' lives. The evaluation was a two-year, quasi-experimental research study that compared girls in Girls Inc. With a similar group of non-participating girls on subjective self-report measures of experiences, skills, and attitudes, and on objective measures from schools on academic and school-based performance. Researchers determined with confidence that regardless of demographic, academic, and social characteristics, girls who participated in Girls Inc. Were outpacing their peers in multiple areas of success and were more likely to:

"In a rigorous comparison study, we found that girls who participate in the Girls Inc. Experience demonstrated improved academic performance, school-related behaviors, physical activity, and leadership outcomes," said Dr. Deborah Moroney, Managing Director of the American Institutes for Research, a not-for-profit research organization with best-in-class experts focused on social science research, evaluation, and technical assistance.

"The future success of our global economy relies on girls having access to the education and resources they need for careers and leadership roles in finance, economics and technology," said Arlene Isaacs-Lowe, Global Head of CSR at Moody's Corporation and President of the Moody's Foundation. "As a longtime partner of Girls Inc., we've had wonderful opportunities to host many groups of girls in our offices and introduce them to the fundamentals of data science and the tech industry. The impact on these girls has been tremendous—when girls are given the opportunities to reach their full potential, all of society benefits." Read latest news here.

Concluded Dr. Hull, "Communities, and service organizations like Girls Inc., need to develop a new set of policy initiatives, structures, and best practices that respond to real challenges for today's girls. Our structured approach is grounded in providing the fundamental opportunities and supports that help them realize their extraordinary potential."

Skirmish Between Banks and Fintechs over Financial Planning Apps

Consumers looking for help to manage debt, track their spending, create savings, or make inexpensive stock trades are in luck. The number of apps available to help them manage every aspect of their finances is growing seemingly exponentially. Many of them from financial technology companies, fintechs, that seek to disrupt the traditional banking industry. And many of these apps rely on access to users' banking data that users prefer to have updated automatically rather than type it in manually. Without mandated security standards like the open banking standards in the European Union, data ownership and the protection of that data are in question.

Fintech and Debit Cards: Battling for Consumers' Attention, a new research report from Mercator Advisory Group analyzes this new market, reviews a variety of apps budgeting, coupons and rewards, saving, and investing, and offers advice to banks and credit unions on ways to avoid disruption by the fintechs.

Read here.:

https://jessicapressreleases.blogspot.com/2018/05/intouch-insight-launches-liacx-new.html

"The market for personal financial planning apps has matured in the last couple of years. The quality of the advice and interactions with users has really improved. These apps depend on getting the individual consumers' banking data, however, and that is raising questions about data ownership and security here in the United States, where open banking hasn't been codified," comments Sarah Grotta, Director, Debit and Alternative Products Advisory Service at Mercator Advisory Group, and author of the report.
