Lumerical’s Photonic Inverse Design Reduces CompoundTek SiPh Grating Coupler Footprint by 20X

CompoundTek, a global foundry services leader in emerging silicon photonic solutions (SiPh), today announces the tapeout of a reduced footprint grating coupler for photonic I/O. The grating couplers were designed and optimized using photonic inverse design (PID) in conjunction with Lumerical's industry leading FDTD nanophotonic simulator. Lumerical's PID capability enables photonic designers to rapidly develop entirely new functionality with improved performance, reduced footprint, and more robust manufacturability. Read news here.

"With this successful tapeout in partnership with Lumerical, customers will be able to access Lumerical's PID solution with confidence when taping-out to CompoundTek in the future. The integration into our design flow, design partners and open SiPh manufacturing platform ecosystem will accelerate the adoption of SiPh solutions for various applications ranging from datacom transceivers, smart sensor, bio-medical, automotive LiDAR, quantum computing and artificial intelligence," said KS Ang, Chief Operating Officer, CompoundTek.

The SiPh grating coupler is a key functional block for photonic I/O, enabling light to be coupled from fiber into and out of a photonic integrated circuit. Unlike end-fire edge couplers, grating couplers can be located anywhere on chip, enabling additional applications such as sense and test. With this flexibility comes the requirement for reduced footprint while maintaining high coupling efficiency. However, with over 100 design parameters, grating couplers are geometrically complex, rendering traditional optimization techniques impractical. Lumerical's PID technology enables designers to automatically and reliably generate optimal grating couplers with hundreds of free parameters. Testimony to its effectiveness, CompoundTek's SiPh new grating couplers have been reduced in size by 20x and promise improved coupling efficiency.

"These new grating couplers will enable our customers to create improved commercial designs with higher yields and faster time to market," said Lumerical CTO, James Pond. "PID's powerful optimization algorithms leverage adjoint sensitivity analysis to explore design spaces that are impractical by other means. Coupled with Lumerical's industry leading FDTD solver, PID enables designers to efficiently explore and optimize designs with hundreds or more design parameters. In contrast, traditional design approaches are limited to a small number of established device designs, exploring much smaller parameter spaces, typically fewer than ten parameters."

CompoundTek's SiPh MPW platform offers a highly flexible solution for photonic integrated circuit developers requiring rapid design and manufacture, necessitating multiple variants of the new grating couplers. New capabilities introduced with Lumerical's 2020a release allow PID to run efficiently on HPC resources, and include job checkpointing, support for Amazon Linux, and online self activation for FDTD Burst Packs. Other notable PID features such as global optimization allow designers to efficiently explore a broad design space and co-optimize for process and packaging variation for the creation of robust designs. Rapidly scaling up with Lumerical's HPC cloud deployment reduced the design cycle for the optimized grating couplers for all eight variants to under two weeks. Click here to read the latest news.

The Python based open source PID implementation is packaged together with Lumerical FDTD for ease of deployment. Alternatively, the original source code is freely available on GitHub at https://github.com/chriskeraly/lumopt. To help new users get started with PID, examples are included in Lumerical's application gallery to speed designers' time to implementation (see https://apps.lumerical.com/inverse-design-grating-coupler.html). More information on Lumerical's Automation API, required to run PID, can be found at https://www.lumerical.com/products/aapi.

Sponsorship Marketing Landscape to Dramatically Change in 2020 Says Allionce Group

Millennial families are viewing life through a different lens than past generations and expect the experiences they choose to engage with to be meaningful, lasting and hands-on. The Allionce Group, a marketing agency that facilitates connections between brands and the families that visit zoos and aquariums throughout the U.S., today predicted that 2020 will see a seismic shift in the way brands in the U.S. approach sponsorship marketing. Sponsorship marketing is proving one of the most valuable ways to connect with millennial families and achieve multiple objectives at once, from increasing brand visibility to driving sales to securing a lifetime of brand loyalty. Yet despite the awareness of the unique needs and traits of millennial consumers, most brands have continued to use the same sponsorship marketing tactics that have dominated the landscape for years -- until now.

"The discussion on the best way to market to millennial families is happening everywhere, and the results of this discussion are incredibly clear," said Mark Giovino the CEO and founder of Allionce Group. "They desire an interactive and personalized experience, they want the brands they purchase to reflect their values, and they expect companies to be good corporate citizens, investing in their communities and supporting important local and global charities and causes."

Music and sports venues remain the leaders for sponsorship marketing opportunities. In fact, according to IEG, sports sponsorships in North America account for 70 percent of the total spend. This is due to the fact that sports has traditionally been a "safe" approach to sponsorship, providing marketers with a tested, if not worn and tired method, that has given sports a considerably overweight share of the sponsorship pie. Unfortunately, these venues do not provide the level of engagement required by the average millennial consumer and they do not hit all the pressure points required by those consumers. More problematic, these traditional brand-cluttered, large audience locations, are oversaturated with marketing and advertising promotion, making it near impossible for brands to rise above the noise and truly differentiate themselves from the competition.

"Some major brands have done their due diligence and discovered that there is an untapped oasis that provides direct access to millennial families: zoos and aquariums," continued Giovino. "With more than 200 non-profit, accredited zoos and aquariums in the U.S., boasting a staggering 195 million visits annually, these special venues see more yearly attendance than the total number of attendees to all MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL games combined! And with an average visit of four hours, visitors to zoos and aquariums are uniquely 'in the moment', spending uninterrupted time together as a family away from the distraction and chaos of everyday life. This provides a rare opportunity for brands to establish relationships that are not available at other venues."

2020 will see more major brands reimagining their approach to sponsorship marketing as traditional methods become increasingly less effective. Further, as we approach the 2020 presidential election, and the topic of the environment and conversation continues to be a dominant factor among millennials, companies will continue to make this a priority, supporting causes and destinations important to their key consumers.

"Zoos and aquariums in the U.S. provide more than $200 million dollars annually to vital conservation efforts," said Giovino. "According to a recent survey, almost 80 percent of those interviewed felt better about companies that support wildlife conservation at zoos and aquariums and two-thirds said they are more likely to buy products and services from those companies, validating the venues as ideal locations to engage consumers. Brand marketers are going to be forced to rethink their approach, whether they want to or not. If they don't, they are likely going to be left behind as forward-thinking competitors establish dominance in this new, innovative and vast sponsorship landscape."

Canvia, The Smart Digital Frame, is Now Widely Available After a Successful Crowdfunding

Not all art is created equal, especially in the "smart art" category. Palacio Inc. is making this distinction with a successful crowdfunding campaign for the interactive art display, Canvia.

Raising more than $325,000, the Silicon Valley startup's tech art vision is becoming a tangible reality, in part due to its refined art experience powered by ArtSense technology. This proprietary processing takes every image and every viewing condition into consideration for a different level of required adjustment. Be alert to the latest news.

ArtSense technology makes the Canvia display realistic like a real painting or print in addition to preserving texture, color and brushstrokes. Setting itself apart from competing digital art displays, Canvia solves the aspect ratio issue of different image sizes using re-positioning and zoom. Zoom also allows the ability to view the details of any part of the artworks.

Canvia's other differentiator includes a whole world of exclusive art at a user's fingertips. Palacio's growing library focuses on current and contemporary genres with over 500 current artists participating on the platform with a nominal subscription fee and access to 3000 artworks for free.

"Canvia represents a long-desired device that empowers 'art as an experience' for art enthusiasts and maintains an authentic look at the same time," said Rahul Ranjan, Founder and CEO of Palacio Inc.

The brand enables users to change their artwork with the seasons, mood, time of day, occasions and more with the touch of a phone or web app. For those looking to feature their very own content, they can simply upload it. Canvia easily transitions decor without breaking the bank on expensive artwork. “Lucy: The Beginnings of Humankind” To Be Available in Audio Format

To mark the 45th year anniversary of the discovery of the most famous hominid fossil in the world, "Lucy: The Beginnings of Humankind" is being released as an audiobook narrated by the author and her discoverer, Dr. Donald Johanson.

One of the most accomplished scholars of human origins, Johanson has produced some of the field's most groundbreaking discoveries, including the most widely known and thoroughly studied fossil of the 20th century, the 3.2-million-year-old "Lucy" skeleton.

The 20th century was peppered with important early-human fossil finds, but Johanson's 1974 discovery in Ethiopia that added a crucial link, prompting major revisions in our understanding of human evolution. "Lucy" possesses an intriguing mixture of ape-like features ( a projecting face and small brain) but also characteristics we consider human, such as upright walking, marking an important step on the path to Homo sapiens.

In the early 1970s the remote region of Ethiopia known as the Afar Triangle was terra incognita and its potential for illuminating our evolutionary past was unrecognized. In spite of the desolate and hostile nature of the area Johanson, with meager funding led an expedition to a site known as Hadar and began to unearth a treasure trove of fossils, including Lucy, that walked the planet some 3 to 4 million years ago. So revolutionary were these discoveries that the entire story of how we became human required substantial revision. Now some 45 years later we know more details of the vital picture of how humans came to be, but the general outlines of the human family tree proposed by Johanson's early work continue to form the core of that story.

Johanson is committed to sharing and explaining his scientific discoveries to the general public. His efforts in this have reached across multiple media—including television, books, and his award-winning science website http://www.becominghuman.org, in addition to lecturing at universities, corporations, and public forums. Johanson is the founding director of the internationally respected Institute of Human Origins at Arizona State University and is available for interview.

The audiobook is published through Blackstone Publishing, one of the largest independent audiobook publishers in the U.S., and can be purchased at Audible. Read all the latest news.
