Mayor Lori Lightfoot Joins Smita Shah, Chair of the Sister Cities of Chicago Delhi Committee, for Annual Lunch and Proclaims October 2nd as Mahatma Gandhi Day in Chicago

Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Senator Dick Durbin, World Business Chicago CEO Andrea Zopp and First Lady Amy Eshelman joined Chicago Sister Cities International Delhi Committee Chair Smita Shah at this year's annual Legacy of Mahatma Gandhi luncheon, marking its fifth year of honoring the man who inspired civil rights movements across the globe. At the event, Mayor Lightfoot also issued a proclamation naming October 2nd Mahatma Gandhi Day in Chicago in recognition of the 150th anniversary of his birth and in acknowledgement of his long lasting legacy and the deep roots of the Indian culture here in Chicago.

"This is truly an honor for the Indian-American community here in Chicago and for me personally," said Smita Shah, President and CEO of SPANN Tech, a construction and engineering management firm and founder of the Legacy of Mahatma Gandhi luncheon. "This idea grew out of a recognition that Chicago is composed of many communities, and that we have to honor all and exclude none. This program allows us to recognize the Indian Community of Chicago, and through Mahatma Gandhi, consider how we can all have an impact on improving lives by working together."

Delhi's position as a sister city to Chicago demonstrates the strong relationship between India and the city as well as the cultural importance of the established Indian-American community to the Chicagoland community. Under Shah's leadership, the Delhi Committee of Chicago founded the Annual Legacy of Mahatma Gandhi Luncheon in 2014, honoring the long-standing exchange of ideas between Mahatma Gandhi and the U.S., and the ever important principles of truth and non-violence.

WHEREAS, October 2, 2019 marks the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi; and

WHEREAS, Gandhi is revered the world over for his nonviolent philosophy of passive resistance and as an advocate for all people, including the poor and disenfranchised, championing the causes of education, economic opportunity, and equality amongst all; and

WHEREAS, Gandhi is often named among the 20th century's most important figures, and remains admired in India as a father of the nation proving that one man has the power to take on an empire, using both intelligence and ethics to make an impact on today's world and showing the importance of resolving differences through peaceful means; and

WHEREAS, Gandhi had a close connection to many Americans and drew inspiration from Henry David Thoreau's essay on the "Duty of Civil Disobedience," which had a great deal to do in shaping Gandhi' ;s own thinking on the subject and to him influencing several African American leaders such as Howard Thurman, Benjamin Mays, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, Chicago takes pride in its tradition of welcoming and celebrating international communities and their customs and shares a long history of friendship with the people of India, beginning in 1893 when Swami Vivekananda, a young philosopher, author, and monk, attended the World Parliament of Religions at the Columbian Exposition; and

WHEREAS, Chicago is home to a vibrant and energetic Indian American community that has made vital contributions to the development of Chicago throughout its history and continues to play an important role in the life of our city and because of these strong ties, the City of Chicago has enjoyed a sister city relationship with Delhi, India since 2001; and

WHEREAS, Chicago Sister Cities International, an initiative of World Business Chicago, works to advance Chicago as a global city and promotes peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation through citizen diplomacy – one individual, one community at a time – for the benefit of Chicago and its sister cities; and

WHEREAS, founded in 2014 by the Delhi Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International, under the leadership of Smita Shah, the Annual Legacy of Mahatma Gandhi Luncheon honors Gandhi's lasting contributions and inspires us all to follow the example left by him:

Bayram Annakov, CEO & Founder of App in the Air, a popular travel app for frequent fliers, concurs. "Third-party apps will create a more efficient booking process by aggregating flights from across the industry. Of course, advancements in technology will be prevalent across all areas of the travel industry but none more evident – and controversial – than biometric technology at TSA checkpoints. According to SITA, a digital travel credential is being developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the international Air Transport Association (IATA) is working on One ID, an initiative to streamline the ID process at all phases of a traveler's journey based on identity management and biometric recognition. Flight of the Future, a new report from British Airways and parent company, IAG, paints an interesting picture for the future of air travel including jet propulsion technology, Smart Cabin technology, supersonic travel as the "norm," and inventive ways of making air travel environmentally friendly.
"Going forward, passengers may increasingly be able to tailor their experience to more specific needs," says Peter Cooke, Design Lead, British Airways. "Instead of buying a first or business class ticket, it might be about buying more space, more significant entertainment or service, similar to hotel rooms. You will be able to create an experience package much differently than you do today."

The report also shows that Smart Cabin components with embedded sensors will certainly change how passengers interact with their environment and suggests a responsive cabin will adapt to a passengers' ergonomic needs, proactively change ambiance, or increase comfort with intelligent seats and activity areas.

"In addition to being raised with technology in most aspects of their lives, the 'post-digital' generation also discovered an insatiable desire for travel and adventure," said Chris Lopinto, president of ExpertFlyer.com. "Combining the need for autonomous technology and the desire to explore, this new generation of consumer is creating both a challenge, and an enormous opportunity for the travel industry as a whole. Personally, I believe the travel industry will rise to the occasion," Mr. Lopinto added.

Growing public awareness of environmental issues and their consequences has led consumers across the world to ask themselves what they can do to reduce their impact. As the effects of climate change become increasingly visible, consumer concern will only grow.

BA's study also reveals that consumers are willing to take measures to reduce their environmental impact, such as choosing the more environmentally friendly travel option even if it costs them more. In fact, no less than 43% of respondents say they would purchase the eco-friendliest flight available, even if it would be the most expensive option they could afford. Meanwhile, 45% of consumers would be happy to opt for a flight that got them to their destination slower than other options, if it were the most environmentally friendly.

TGA Premier Sports Central Coast offers TGA Premier Golf, Tennis, Ultimate and Volleyball and will also be the first TGA Chapter to offer a Beach Volleyball curriculum. "This past summer, with the support of my local beach HOA, I did a soft opening for TGA Central Coast and hosted a Beach Volleyball camp. The TGA volleyball curriculum is awesome and I just made some slight tweaks to incorporate the sand. The diving drill was the kids' favorite along with serving into the target for points," Hatfield says.

Hatfield's territory includes the coastal communities in Ventura County. "We're coordinating with Los Olivios Golf Course and the School's PTA to organize a fundraiser that incorporates families playing golf together and raises funds for the PTA at local schools in the Ventura Unified School District," she says. The chapter will also be hosting its first Fall Break Tennis Camp on the courts of a local high school in October.

With Hatfield's new franchise, thousands of youngsters will be impacted in and around California's Central Coast. "When children engage in sports, they begin to build and nurture skills that allow them to strive to become our future leaders. Through TGA's dynamic curriculum, we will incorporate station-based athletic skill development activities, STEAM Labs to explore educational concepts through sports, and key life lessons including teamwork, sportsmanship, perseverance, and leadership," she adds.

TGA impacts communities by introducing sports that empower kids directly into schools and community centers through before- or after-school enrichment programs, spurring participation in a way that starts at the grassroots level but has national implications.

"Kristin Hatfield has incredible enthusiasm for her community, sports and how together they can change the lives of youth and families," says TGA CEO Joshua Jacobs. "Using TGA's blueprint will allow her to customize the local experience families will get through TGA programs. On the coast, beach volleyball is in the fabric of the culture, so it's a natural that Kristin would take this new program offering and run with it. She's going to be an amazing asset to the families in her community."

TGA creates an accessible player pathway for students and their families to build on their new-found sports passion and advance further in the sports. From introductory programs, to recreational camps, clinics and family programs, engagement in these programs can lead to juniors playing on high school and college teams. With registration fees at less than $200, TGA's six-week enrichment programs are also extremely affordable for families interested in starting their kids in a sports program.

TGA provides all of the equipment for kids at no cost in the program, including its own line of custom golf and tennis equipment to provide all players an affordable option to get into the sport. Through donations that funds scholarships, the TGA Sports Foundation is enabling kids who wouldn't otherwise take up the sport to learn and grow from it.
