More Isn’t Always Better: NASFAA Study Shows Students, Parents Prefer Simplicity in Financial Aid Award Notifications

While making the choice to attend college is a step toward economic mobility, it's also a significant financial investment. More than ever, students and families need to have clear and concise information about college cost to arm them with the knowledge to make a sound investment. But what students and parents want is sometimes at odds with what policymakers require and what schools provide, according to a new survey from the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) and ASA Research (ASA).

NASFAA and ASA set out to consumer test the "College Financing Plan" recently released by the U.S. Department of Education, which would replace the previous "Financial Aid Shopping Sheet." ASA conducted six focus groups at the high school and college level with a total of 66 students and parents, as well as written questionnaires testing the participants' comprehension of key financial aid concepts and award scenarios. Here's what we found:

"If consumer testing points to anything, it's that the most important ingredient in conveying this vital information is empathy," said NASFAA President Justin Draeger. "Schools work to put themselves in the shoes of their students. Policymakers, lawmakers and bureaucrats in DC need to put themselves in the shoes of both schools and students, and avoid the temptation to think 'they know best.' And in all scenarios, the best way to know what students and parents are thinking is to ask and test them, through rigorous, qualitative and quantitative consumer testing."

Author Imagines Next-Century Planet Earth in Debut Kaiju Sci-Fi Novel

Author Joe Sharcoff has released his debut kaiju sci-fi novel, "The Drakos Effect," that thrusts readers into the not-so-far-away 22nd century, explores ethical concepts like personal responsibility and touches on the nebulousness of reality as well as objective truth.

In "The Drakos Effect," the people of Earth inhabit giant fusion-powered cities sprawling across the planet. Humans are host to the Cephians – advanced plant-like aliens – who have been in the solar system for 40 years and are assessing humankind's readiness to join their galactic community. Although the Cephians are friendly, humanity's trust begins to wane, at times leading to violence against the visitors.

But astrobiologist Dr. Shana Savarino admires the calm, quiet wisdom of the Cephians and even prefers their company. And after a mysterious being buried in the Chicxulub crater in Mexico is disturbed by nuclear explosions, Shana may be the only person who has a shot at stopping the entity before it wipes out all of life on Earth and in surrounding space.

"When I began writing this book, I really wanted to go back to what I liked when I was a kid – Godzilla, King Kong, stories about big monsters – as opposed to working in the more popular space opera subset of sci fi," Sharcoff said. "My hope is that readers will have fun with 'The Drakos Effect' and experience the awe a good kaiju story often elicits as they progress through it."

"Break The Silence" is the first single off the Dreamer album. The song is an earworm that burrows its way into the listener's mind upon first spin. Velvet Code's buoyant vocals bounce deftly above his expert synthesizer riffs and driving electropop rhythm. Originally released in Canada in September 2018, "Break The Silence" has achieved more than 1.5 million streams across digital platforms including Spotify, YouTube and Apple Music. "Break The Silence" aims to remove some of the stigma surrounding issues of mental health and the song was inspired by Velvet Code's own experiences battling anxiety.

"Mary Offered Ladybugs and Love Yous" is the second single off the Dreamer album and that song is currently charting at #27 on Billboard. Originally released in Canada in February 2019, "Mary Offered Ladybugs and Love Yous" is another strong effort from Velvet Code. This song evokes Robert Miles' "Children" on the intro with its haunting acoustic piano. Immediately, Velvet Code's anguished vocals seize the listener with an urgency impossible to ignore. The production gradually builds until the song erupts in a triumphant-sounding chorus. "Mary Offered Ladybugs and Love Yous" illustrates Velvet Code's skill at crafting catchy hooks and the irresistible electropop production cuts through the airwaves to the core of music lovers' hearts. Dreamer is a collection of nine original songs dedicated to Velvet Code's late-father and it gathers stories from Velvet Code's own life experiences.
