iPad Won’t Crack – NEW Rugged iPad Bundles are too Strong

This week iPads got more rugged with the launch of Rugged iPad® Bundles. MobileDemand manufactures rugged tablet systems for Warehousing, Field Service, Retail and many other industries. Rugged cases for iPad have been offered by MobileDemand for about a year. But now customers can get the iPad 9.7" or iPad Air 10.5" along with the Rugged xCase, which includes a hand-strap to reduce the likelihood of drops, a brief-case handle for easier carrying, and a screen protector made with strengthened glass that is pre-applied by experts in a dust-controlled environment. Our Rugged xCases for iPad are proven rugged up to 10 feet, tested to MIL-STD 810G standards.

"One issue many companies run into when deploying technology to a mobile workforce is the amount of time it takes IT staff to prepare devices for teams," says John E. Chis, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for MobileDemand. "At MobileDemand we're known for significantly simplifying this process. With our new Rugged bundles for iPad, we pre-assemble iPads with a rugged case and apply a screen protector before they ever ship." This substantially reduces the burden on IT staff for MobileDemand's customers because applying a screen protector alone can be very time-consuming, and if not applied correctly, drives a higher scrap rate, not to mention pesky bubbles. IT staff can simply remove the Rugged iPad Bundles from the box, charge and distribute to their workforce.

How many drops does it take to break an iPad in a MobileDemand Rugged xCase?
Chis says, "The rugged-ability of our Rugged xTablets and Rugged xCases is something we're trying to define this week. Our Marketing team is running a promotion where they are trying to break an iPad bundled in our Rugged xCase and our rugged screen protector. Visitors can guess how many drops it will withstand to win one. If they can't break it after several hours of trying, they may resort to more drastic measures." Stay up on the drop testing and sign up to enter your guess each day for a chance to win a Rugged iPad 9.7" Bundle.

Kalamazoo Valley Community College Names 2019 Dale B Lake Award Winners

A men's baseball team two-year starting shortstop and captain with a 3.48 grade point average along with a two-year starter, captain, setter and defensive specialist with a 3.65 grade point average on the volleyball team were recently named Kalamazoo Valley Community College Dale B. Lake Award winners.

Trent Quartermaine, a walk on who graduated from Gull Lake High School and Alana Sundermann, a graduate of Holt High School, received the annual award in honor of the college's founding president, Dale B. Lake.

"What makes Trent's time at Kalamazoo Valley so extraordinary is that this young man took the chance to come to the school as a walk on, turned that very quickly into an athletic scholarship and hasn't looked back since," said Men's Baseball Head Coach Cody Piechocki. "His work ethic and leadership has been off the charts. He has been able to turn himself into one of the best student athletes in the NJCAA and has been an outstanding ambassador for the college. He is a leader on and off the field and sets the gold standard for what we expect of our student athletes." Read this for more information.

Quartermaine, who earned an associate degree in business administration at last month's Commencement ceremony, will continue both his education and baseball career at Ball State University in Indiana in the fall. He currently leads the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) in homeruns and runs batted in.

Head Volleyball Coach Jennifer Buikema nominated Sundermann to receive the 49-year-old award given annually to one outstanding male and one outstanding female student-athlete.

"Alana is and always has been dependable in stressful situations and has embraced the opportunity to learn and grow with such fierce enthusiasm," Buikema said. "She has been such a pleasure to coach because she also has pushed the coaches' philosophies by continually asking questions for her own knowledge and the betterment of the team. She stands up for what she believes in and leads by examples, setting the bar very high for future players and captains to follow. She has been an outstanding leader both on and off the court."

Sundermann is expected to graduate this summer with an associate degree in communications. She will continue her studies and playing volleyball at the University of Findley, a NCAA Division II school, in the fall.

The Dale B. Lake Award began in 1970 in honor of Kalamazoo Valley Community College's founding president. It is an effort to give annual recognition to one outstanding male and one outstanding female student-athlete. Special consideration is given to exceptional academic achievement as well as outstanding athletic contribution. Qualities such as leadership, loyalty, enthusiasm, reliability, and initiative are also evaluated. Each coach may nominate one individual to the Athletic Director for consideration for the Dale B. Lake Award. The Athletic Director then selects one male and one female award winner. Each winner receives a plaque and will be added to the Dale B. Lake plaque displayed within the Athletic Office at Kalamazoo Valley.

Restaurant Sales Stumble Not a Cause for Panic, Employee Vacancies Remain Bigger Concern

The upward momentum in restaurant sales halted again during April. Same-store sales growth was -0.4 percent, hence sales growth has now been negative during two of the last three months. Although these results were undoubtedly disappointing for restaurant operators, it is too soon to start worrying about a true downturn for the industry. These insights come from Black Box Intelligence™ data from TDn2K™, based on weekly sales from over 31,000 locations representing 170+ brands and nearly $72 billion in annual sales.

"April was a soft month for restaurants. Putting these results in context helps us remain cautiously optimistic about the current state of the industry," said Victor Fernandez, vice president of insights and knowledge for TDn2K. "First, the industry was lapping over one of the strongest months in same-store sales growth last year. When taking in a longer-term view of sales, the two-year growth rate of 0.9 percent during April still reflects a growing industry. Furthermore, all months since October of 2018, with the exception of February which was plagued by extremely bad weather, have reported positive same-store sales growth when compared with the same month two years ago. The average for two-year sales growth during the previous twelve months was -1.6 percent."

Additionally, April was negatively impacted by the Easter holiday. This holiday translates into decreased restaurant visits for many brands and in some cases, closed restaurants. This year Easter was celebrated in April but in 2018 it fell in March. As a result, same-store sales growth approached -2.0 percent during the week of Easter. This negative sales growth was the worst for the industry since the last week of February when winter storms severely hurt sales in large portions of the country.

Declining Guest Visits Remain the Norm For Most Brands, Guest Checks Accelerating
Same-store traffic growth during April was -3.5 percent, a decline of 1.6 percentage points from March. However, the Easter effect also needs to be taken into consideration for traffic. The third week in April also experienced the worst traffic numbers since the end of February. The holiday shift aided March's guest counts but negatively impacted April's. Click here to read the latest news.

These poor traffic results again highlight how restaurants continue to rely on their guests spending more per visit to try to grow their sales. Average guest check growth has been accelerating since the fourth quarter of last year. This is likely a result of restaurant brands raising their menu prices at a faster pace and a favorable shift in product mix driven by a more confident consumer.

Fine Dining and Family Dining Favored by Easter Holiday Shift
Fine dining and family dining were the two best performing segments based on same-store sales growth during April. These segments were also the most favored by their incremental Easter sales. Quick service was the only other segment that achieved positive growth during the month, despite a soft Easter week.

Consumer Spending Softened, Positive Economic Outlook Remains for Restaurants
"Despite what looked like a strong first quarter expansion in the economy, there were some warnings in the latest GDP report," commented Joel Naroff, president of Naroff Economic Advisors and TDn2K economist. "Most importantly, the growth in consumer spending was the weakest in four years. There has also been a decline in the year-over-year growth in retail sales at restaurants. Is this softening worrisome? Maybe not. Incomes are still expanding moderately, consumer confidence is high and job gains remain strong. Thus, personal income growth is solid enough so that restaurant sales should improve. What is likely happening is the rebound in demand that began in 2018 and accelerated this year, is simply moving back toward sustainable levels." Read all the related news.

"Barring an all-out trade war, the economy should continue growing solidly the rest of the year. As labor markets tighten further, wage gains and household demand should pick up. Indeed, the only dark cloud is the elongated poor weather patterns that have restrained typical spring spending patterns. Since no one really knows how to forecast the weather, if we assume normal summer conditions, restaurant sales should accelerate."

Rising Employee Vacancies Pose Threat to Restaurant Performance
Employee staffing issues give restaurant operators little reason to celebrate. TDn2K studies continue to feature service as the one consistent differentiator for top performing brands based on sales growth. Even if other attributes of the restaurant experience, such as food and ambiance, have fluctuated in relative importance, superior execution on service remains at the heart of what successful restaurant brands do consistently.

Yet, most companies are facing the toughest challenges in their history when it comes to staffing their restaurants, unquestionably at the cost of subpar service levels. According to TDn2K's Workforce Index, vacancies have increased at a relatively consistent rate over the past several quarters as the number of unfilled unit level positions across restaurants escalates. During the first quarter of 2019, 35 percent of companies reported an increase in their unfilled management positions, while only 12 percent were able to reduce their vacancies. 38 percent of companies had an increase in their unfilled hourly employee positions and only 10 percent of them made any progress reducing their vacancies.

The drivers behind these staffing difficulties continued their pressure on the industry during March. Rolling 12-month turnover for both restaurant hourly employees and managers increased again, adding to the already historically high turnover rates experienced by the industry in recent quarters. Additionally, the industry continues to create new jobs that need to be filled at a rapid pace. Year-over-year growth in the number of restaurant employees grew by 2.7 percent during March, an uptick from the 2.6 percent growth rate reported for February. Click here.

TDn2K (Transforming Data into Knowledge) is the leading insights & knowledge provider of restaurant industry human resources, financial performance and consumer insights data through their products People Report™, Black Box Intelligence™ and White Box Social Intelligence™. TDn2K allows organizations to leverage benchmarked data to achieve best-in-class performance results. TDn2K currently tracks, analyzes and benchmarks the largest database of real restaurant data in the US that includes 300 companies, 2.6 million employees and nearly $72 billion in annual revenue. Shimoda Releases a Series of Shoulder Straps Designed Specifically for Women

This new series of three shoulder straps is designed specifically for women, constructed around pressure points across the chest and under the arm to provide a secure and comfortable fit.

When a need for a backpack with better-fitting straps was expressed to Shimoda, Founder Ian Millar assembled a development team of female adventure photographers, all early adopters of the Shimoda Bag system who had contributed to the initial Kickstarter campaign. With the help and design insight of Team Shimoda's Varina Patel, over 35 women participated in the development and testing for this project.

"I've had some really good camera bags over the years - but for the first time, my backpack's harness was made for a woman. A bag that fits perfectly makes a real difference." – Varina Patel

The final results are two Shoulder Strap styles that provide a different fit based on body type and technical requirements.

The Simple Strap (Available in Standard and Petite sizes)
The standard Simple Strap's look and function is intentionally simple, with various points to connect accessories and a shape that contours around the chest area in a lightweight and breathable form. This style became a favorite of women with a medium bust and shoulder width. Read related news now.

Petite Simple Strap
After extensive testing and conversations with the team, Shimoda quickly saw a need for a 'Petite' size of the Simple Strap as well. The Simple Strap Petite is ideal for women with a small bust and shoulder width. Be alert to read related news.

"The straps have been a game changer for me. They are much more comfortable and supportive, enabling me to happily stay out in the field longer." – Christina Donadi

The Technical Strap
The Technical Strap, as the name suggests, has features that stay consistent with the original Shimoda shoulder strap design. A mobile phone and stretch-jersey sleeve let you carry devices, water, and accessories so that they are always within reach. This style became a favorite of adventure photographers with a large bust and shoulder width.

All women's shoulder strap models feature a new dual-sternum strap configuration which contours and fastens around the chest and relieves unnecessary and uncomfortable pressure.

The contoured shapes, positioning of the sternum straps and high-quality materials all compliment the already adjustable torso settings of current Shimoda backpacks. Taken together, the Shimoda system truly provides an exceptionally comfortable and personalized fit.
