Global Toy Sales Declined by 2 Percent in 2018, Reports The NPD Group

Toy industry sales decreased by 2 percent* in 2018 across the 13 global markets (G13)** tracked by The NPD Group, a leading global information company. Similar to last year's reporting, toy sales in the United States, the world's largest toy market, matched the world's collective performance (-2 percent). Mexico, Russia, and Brazil saw growth while the United Kingdom, Australia, Spain and France experienced declines. Read related news here.

Category Highlights

Dolls, Action Figures & Accessories, and Youth Electronics experienced respective growth of 9 percent, 8 percent, and 1 percent, while sales of Arts & Crafts were flat. Of the remaining supercategories tracked by NPD, Plush and Vehicles saw the largest declines. Continue reading.

"Several factors added up to a smaller share of wallet for traditional toys in 2018, including a shrinking retail footprint and the increasing demand for video games," said Frédérique Tutt, Global Toys Industry Analyst at The NPD Group. "While it isn't business as usual for toys, 2019 sounds promising thanks to a wide range of kid-friendly movies, which often helps to drive toys sales, as well as old, favorite toy brands that are either celebrating milestone birthdays or attempting to make a comeback."

Looking at the top five selling toy properties across the G13 in 2018, L.O.L. Surprise! was the largest property overall, holding first position in six out of 13 global markets followed by Barbie, Marvel Universe, Nerf, and Star Wars.

"In 2018, many manufacturers demonstrated their resilience in what could easily be described as a tumultuous market, with two rising to the top to win NPD's annual awards for excellence in sales," continued Tutt. "The winners of 2018's Global (G13) Toy Industry Awards are Mattel for the #1 Manufacturer, as well as MGA Entertainment for #1 Property, L.O.L. Surprise!, and for the #1 Selling Toy, L.O.L. Surprise! Doll Assortment."

Groundbreaking Personal Medical Record System App Officially Launches in App Stores

Key of Life, a mobile application for patients to keep medical records in one place, has officially launched in the Apple Store and Google Play Store. Key of Life allows patients to take control of their healthcare by creating a single, digital location to store all information regarding medications, lab results, health history, radiology, and more, that can be shared with anyone they choose. Key Of Life's entrance into the app world dramatically improves the healthcare industry by enabling users to quickly access all medical records for a smooth transaction to their healthcare providers.

"The Key of Life app is on the forefront of medical technology and drastically improves EHR, EMR transactions," said Chad Anfinson, owner and CEO of Key of Life App, LLC. "Managing your family medical history can be cumbersome and stressful, but with Key of Life, parents can easily pull up their children's records with a touch of a button, adults can share their parents' medical information, and any caregiver can instantly access their loved ones' medical history."

Prior to Key of Life, patients would need to fax, email, or provide physical copies of their medical records and charts from different doctors to the corresponding physician's office. Key of Life allows patients to store, update, and organize all of their EHR and EMR on their mobile device.

CA Flower Mall All-Nighter Celebrates Galentine’s & Valentine’s Days

The week of love is here and women are celebrating Galentine's Day as part of it. Downtown LA's California Flower Mall wholesale flower market opens all night Galentine's Day – Wednesday, February 13th – with thousands of fresh flower arrangements, bouquets, cut flowers, and plant choices for budget-wise women celebrating their gal pals and shoppers buying Valentine's flowers direct from the flower market source.

Galentine's Day continues to gain mainstream momentum according to a report by the Wall Street Journal, NPD retail analyst Marshal Cohen estimates the Galentine's phenomenon could raise Valentine's Day revenues by as much as 20% in the next three years.
"Rather than taking the place of Valentine's Day, Galentine's Day updates it. The holiday acknowledges today's empowered woman – she's not defined by her relationship status. Floral trade reports show women have always given flowers to other women in their life for Valentine's Day. We love how this distinctly pink celebration is brightening up the holiday color palette. It emphasizes self-care, recognizing our female friendships are as important as our romantic ones, and they deserve a special day to be celebrated. I think this is why so many women are connecting with Galentine's Day," says Vani Trogolo, CFM spokesperson.

Trogolo offers these Galentine's week floral self-care tips:

U.S. Water Quality Wake-Up Call: Americans Report Increase in Instances of Water Contamination

A new national survey shows almost a third of Americans (28%) have experienced water contamination issues in the past two years, a slight increase from a prior poll.* The survey, conducted by leading water technology company and global advocate for clean water, Bluewater, reveals how the deteriorating state of America's aging infrastructure affects Americans' drinking water attitudes and habits. Federal government rollbacks on clean water protections threaten to compound these national water problems.

"Everyone saw what happened in Flint," said Bluewater president Anders Jacobson in reference to Flint's lead contamination crisis. "It's important we recognize that what happened in Flint wasn't an anomaly - there are more than 3,000 U.S. communities found to have lead contamination levels higher than Flint, plus emerging instances of contamination from agricultural runoff, PFAS, microplastics and nitrates."

The Bluewater survey also reveals more Americans are taking action to improve their water supply quality. Nearly 60 percent of respondents reported they are taking some kind of action to control what's in their drinking water--ranging from drinking store-bought bottled water to using a purification system or water delivery service.

Changing Attitudes toward Single-Use Plastic Water Bottles
In January 2018, Bluewater published its first water habits survey that revealed 33 percent of Americans drank more than five plastic water bottles per week. One year later, that statistic dropped to 22 percent, suggesting that Americans are weaning off single-use plastic bottled water amidst growing awareness of plastic pollution and its threat to human and environmental health.

Embracing Clean Solutions
Approximately one in five Americans reported they now routinely carry reusable water canteens and hold a desire for public water refill stations, helping the environment and ensuring access to uncontaminated water.

"The 'easy' conveniences society afford us are polluting our bodies and our planet," Jacobson continued. "Bluewater's work around the globe, and this survey, show that individuals are searching for more sustainable, clean water pure water solutions. What will it take for the world's governments, corporations and communities to do more collectively to stem the plastic waste stream and guarantee clean water for citizens?" Read all the latest news.

Additional Survey Findings:

Despite the growing tide against single-use plastics, plastic bottled water dependency is still a major concern. The Bluewater survey found more than one quarter of respondents (26 percent) look to bottled water as a method to control the quality of their water supply.

But in addition to generating plastic waste, this dependency has unknown consequences. Last year, Orb Media released a study that found 93 percent of plastic water bottles contained "plastic debris including polypropylene, nylon and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)." Research on the long-term health effects of consuming such debris is nascent but linked to hormonal changes and cancer.
