Tinley Park Fire Department Saves Four Dogs Using Pet Oxygen Masks

Invisible Fence® Brand has donated 1,800+ pet oxygen mask kits to the state of Illinois on behalf of their Project Breathe™ Program, including hundreds of kits in the Greater Chicago Area. With the help of local fire departments, this life-saving equipment has saved numerous pet lives like these four dogs in Cook County.

According to Tinley Park Fire Chief, Forest F. Reeder Jr., firefighters tended to a house fire Tuesday evening in the 6200 block of 167th Street, where they found four dogs unconscious. His rescue crew worked diligently alongside Kurtz Ambulance to administer O2, reviving the smoke-exposed dogs.

About Project Breathe
The Project Breathe™ Program was established with the goal of equipping every fire station in America and Canada with pet oxygen masks. These masks allow firefighters to give oxygen to pets who are suffering from smoke inhalation when they are rescued from fires.

Since its inception in 2006, Project Breathe has donated more than 24,000 individual masks to fire departments across North America with hundreds of confirmed lives saved. Each easy-to-carry kit contains three masks in small, medium and large, so pets of all sizes can be protected. Continue reading.

Nominate Your Fire Dept.
In honor of their 45th Anniversary, Invisible Fence is donating an additional 45 pet oxygen mask kits to fire departments nominated by their community. Anybody interested can nominate their local fire station on the brand's Facebook page here, now through Aug. 31, 2018.

Each year, it's estimated more than 40,000 pets die in fires, most succumbing to smoke inhalation. The reality in most cases is that first responders lack the equipment to resuscitate and save these animals. These dophotosnations will give more pets a fighting chance and reduce the number of pet fatalities. The devices will be used for rescues like the recent one in Northern, IL. Be alert to the latest news.

"For 45 years, we've been protecting family pets, including what takes place inside homes," said Ed Hoyt, Director of Invisible Fence® Brand. "We've seen how these masks save lives. Our ultimate goal is to equip every fire department across America with these life-saving devices. We are excited to give communities the chance to be a part of these donations for our 45th Anniversary and proud of all of our team members who are giving personal time to help various animal organizations and causes across the country."

Marjorie Merryman Commissioned for Original Composition Based on Feminist Saint

For Scripps' third National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Award in a row, Associate Professor of Music Anne Harley will serve as the artistic director for the commission of a musical composition that sets texts from the Acts of Paul and Thecla to an original score for a vocal and instrumental ensemble. Harley has led all three NEA grants.

Marjorie Merryman '72 was commissioned by Harley to compose the original piece, which is set to premier at Scripps College in April, 2020. One of Scripps' first composition majors, Merryman is internationally renowned as an American composer. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including two prizes from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Merryman is on the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music, where she was formerly Provost and Senior Vice President.

This composition is the latest in a series of 17 song cycles produced under the artistic direction of Harley, whose recording label, Voices of the Pearl, commissions, performs and records musical works from composers across the globe, setting text by and about female esoterics from world traditions throughout history. Harley is a soprano vocalist internationally recognized as a specialist in contemporary classical music and extended voice techniques.

"[The project] focuses on lifting up the voices of actual women who were notable practitioners and leaders of esoteric spiritual practices, but whose voices have been subsumed by what has become a patriarchal tradition," says Harley.

St. Thecla was an aristocratic woman who abandoned her worldly goods, eschewed marriage, performed miracles to escape death when tortured, and followed Paul in the first century CE. Arguably the earliest female teacher of Christianity, her story will be translated from the original Greek and Coptic for the composition.

"She is a very intriguing character, sometimes referred to as a 'feminist' saint," says Merryman. "Her story, and the issues around its status in various traditions, raise interesting questions about acceptable roles for female figures within religious hierarchies. The ideas are certainly resonant in our time: notions of a woman's identity played out in an atmosphere of gender-based constraints, sexual intimidation, and even violence. It will be challenging and rewarding to find music that can convey some sense of the emotional and intellectual complexity of this character; I think Anne Harley's great expressive range will be perfect for this [challenge]."

Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society Approves New Chapter for Chapman University

Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious honor society, has admitted Chapman University as a member.

"Less than 10 percent of U.S. colleges and universities have received the designation of Phi Beta Kappa," said Chapman University President Daniele Struppa. "It is truly the highest distinction a university can earn. We are proud to have been selected to join this time-honored association, and we know it is an important next step in the life of Chapman University."

Student Impact

The benefit to students is enduring, Struppa said

"When a student is elected as a Phi Beta Kappa scholar, it is a prestigious achievement that will have a highly positive impact on their career pursuits and lifelong opportunities," the president noted. "To employers and future associates, it is a recognized measurement of their hard work, critical thinking skills and intellectual curiosity."

The honor follows a rigorous three-year application and review process. Chapman will officially open its Phi Beta Kappa (PBK) chapter this fall.

In addition to having a top GPA, students must meet Phi Beta Kappa's stringent national requirements in mathematics, foreign languages, conduct/character and breadth and depth in the liberal arts and sciences. These students are then acknowledged as the top 10 percent of the University's undergraduate liberal arts and science students and are granted lifetime membership. Students are inducted as members of PBK in their final year of college. All members are entitled to wear the Phi Beta Kappa "key" pin, an internationally recognized symbol of academic and personal achievement.

Acknowledgement of Excellence

"This is an exciting and proud time for us ― Chapman's substantial growth and educational advancements have again been heralded on a national stage," said Lisa Leitz, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Peace Studies at Chapman University. Leitz led the committee working on Chapman's application. "This acknowledgment heightens the prestige of Chapman's undergraduate education. Every aspect of what makes a university exceptional – from general education requirements to student affairs programming, graduation rates to financial stability, library holdings to faculty governance procedures — was evaluated by PBK at Chapman over the last 20 years. This success acknowledges our simultaneous growth and improved educational outcomes of our students and faculty."
Endowment Support

Chapman has committed to supporting its PBK chapter by establishing a $3 million endowment designated to further the work of Phi Beta Kappa at Chapman and to support related initiatives on campus that develop the talents of Chapman students in preparation for graduate work and excellence in the workforce.

Students elected to Phi Beta Kappa join a lifetime network of more than 500,000 other members around the nation who are business, technology and government leaders; distinguished scientists, doctors and lawyers; noted artists, writers and journalists; and prominent activists and philanthropists.

The first five universities to found Phi Beta Kappa chapters were the College of William & Mary (1776), Yale University (1780), Harvard University (1781), Dartmouth College (1787) and Union College (1817).

With its new membership in PBK, Chapman University joins the company of Stanford University, UCLA, UC Berkeley, Occidental College, Scripps College, UC San Diego, UC Davis, San Francisco State, Claremont McKenna, Pomona College and others in California.
