Carbon Tax and Paris Climate Change Targets Will Decimate Canadian Economy say Friends of Science Society Dismissing Citizens’ Climate Lobby Cheer-leading

As reported by CBC on Oct. 23, 2018, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the federal government will impose a carbon tax on all Canadians, but will provide rebates, a move that was cheered in a tweet by Citizens' Climate Lobby of the US, and rejected by Friends of Science in their new report entitled "Carbon Kleptomania."

Robert Lyman, Ottawa energy policy consultant issued a new blog post to help Canadians walk through this curious offer to get money back on carbon taxes, entitled "Jane Q. Canadian's Carbon Tax Quandary."

Trudeau incorrectly claimed that Canadians have been 'polluting for free.' In fact, for almost fifty years, Canadians have been paying for billions of dollars in regulatory fees, fuel taxes, and subsidies to special interests. Carbon dioxide is not on the list of Canada's Inventory of Air Pollutants. LINK: canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/air-pollution/publications/emission-inventory-report-2016.html

Trudeau incorrectly claimed that various extreme weather-related events like storms, droughts and wildfires are evidence of climate change, a common fallacy disputed by climate scientist Dr. Madhav Khandekar, former IPCC expert reviewer, WMO regional expert, and Friends of Science adviser. Dr. Judith Curry also disputed such claims in her testimony to the US Senate of Jan. 16, 2014, referring to the IPCC and SREX as sources.

Friends of Science Society says there is no evidence that taxing carbon dioxide will have any influence on climate. In a cold, vast, wintry country like Canada, such a tax will simply make life hard for ordinary people and drive industry offshore.

Though Citizen's Climate Lobby just held a conference in Ottawa, touting the so-called 'carbon dividend' plan of Mark Cameron of Canadians for Clean Prosperity, Friends of Science Society says there will be no on-going carbon dividend money from a plan whose objective it is to stop carbon emissions. In their words, this is a plan to 'tax 'em and bribe 'em with their own money."

Likewise, Citizens' Climate Lobby celebrated the Ecofiscal Commission's carbon policy proposals, which Friends of Science rebutted on April 18, 2018 in their report "Let Them Eat Carbon."

Friends of Science Society have expressed concerns that some in the scientific community are abandoning facts and evidence in favor of feelings in the climate debate, a criticism they had of Citizens' Climate Lobby adviser Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, following her visit to Calgary in March, 2018.

Friends of Science Society says many environmental non-governmental groups have been funded by foreign ClimateWorks billionaires interested in a global cap and trade system and pushing renewables – for which a 'price on carbon' is a necessity. Canadians should reject foreign interference in domestic energy and climate policies, especially those that have no benefit to climate or environment.

More crucial, rapid decarbonization, such as that proposed by the recent UN climate change report (IPCC SR15) would cause mass deaths, foretold by Prof. Michael J. Kelly of Cambridge in 2010. Consequently, carbon taxes on an increasing sliding scale should not be undertaken on rebate bribes to taxpayers.

About

Friends of Science Society is an independent group of earth, atmospheric and solar scientists, engineers, and citizens who are celebrating its 16th year of offering climate science insights. After a thorough review of a broad spectrum of literature on climate change, Friends of Science Society has concluded that the sun is the main driver of climate change, not carbon dioxide (CO2).
