NWEA Launches Educators for Equity Grant Program to Foster Equity in Educational Opportunity and Outcomes for PreK-12 Students

NWEA, the not-for-profit provider of assessment solutions, announced today the launch of its Educators for Equity Grant Program, a new initiative for helping schools foster academic growth and achievement for preK-12 students who face systemic barriers to academic opportunities. The program will award grants of up to $10,000 to schools, school districts, and non-profit organizations to help fund initiatives and programs designed to support the academic development of under-served students.

Educators, including teachers, principals, and education specialists, may apply for grant awards for their schools or districts to fund programs and activities that directly support the academic progress of students. This can include curricula as well as programs that support student engagement in the classroom; help facilitate dialogue amongst educators, students and families about high academic expectations; and provide needed academic supports, such as academically-focused after-school programs. For 2019, at least three grants in amounts up to $10,000 will be awarded.

"We are very excited about the launch of our first-ever NWEA grant program," said Chris Minnich, CEO, NWEA. "Our goal with this program is to support educators in their work to foster equity in educational opportunity and outcomes, so all students leave secondary education prepared with choices to further their academic growth and workforce participation. We look forward to working collaboratively with these schools and organizations to support student growth and achievement."

To be eligible for a grant, applicants must be a U.S. school serving students from pre-K through 12th grade and either a public school or not-for-profit organization. Applications will be evaluated on the extent to which the award will benefit students who face systemic barriers to academic opportunities, including students who identify as Black or African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, or Asian/Pacific Islander; students learning English and speaking a language other than English fluently; and students experiencing economic disadvantage. In addition, programs will be evaluated based on evidence base, equity mission, cultural relevance, and academic focus. Use of NWEA products and services is not required for eligibility and will not be considered when selecting grant recipients.

For more information on the NWEA Educators for Equity program or to apply, please visit http://www.nwea.org/equitygrant. The application deadline is June 30, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. EDT. Read here.

NWEA will also be available to discuss the program in booth 1631 at ASCD Empower19, March 16-19 in Chicago, Illinois. If you are interested in setting up a meeting with NWEA at ASCD, please email jmoritz(at)0to5(dot)com

Tenzing Appoints New General Manager to Accelerate MDM Practice

Tenzing, a leading global commerce service provider, is pleased to announce that Derek Corrick has been appointed as Vice President and General Manager for Master Data Management (MDM), utilizing his extensive experience to accelerate the company's vision and direction for MDM.

With over 10 years in the Information Management industry, Mr. Corrick has helped enterprise clients successfully implement MDM solutions and capture true ROI from their technology investments. His background includes starting and scaling practices in the MDM space, while forming deep relationships and connections in the industry. In his new role, effective immediately, Mr. Corrick will provide expertise on market demands, guide the product roadmap, and manage strategic relationships with new and existing partners.

"Tenzing has a strong history in helping eCommerce organizations (both B2C and B2B) with their commerce strategies. What we've learned over the years is that data is the No. 1 root problem when it comes to issues across nearly every area aspect of a business," said Raj Atwal, Chief Commercial Officer at Tenzing. "Leveraging deep expertise in both Commerce and MDM, Tenzing is able to fill the data gap and help our clients lay the right foundation for their evolving Commerce strategy. Derek's appointment adds tremendous value to our MDM customers; particularly his unique talent and understanding of the complementary relationship between technology and business processes."

"Having closely worked with Derek in the past, I have witnessed firsthand his ability to help clients build smart MDM solutions and get optimal value from their MDM implementation," said Greg Wong, Chief Revenue Officer at Tenzing. Mr. Corrick added, "Tenzing has a unique 'customer for life' philosophy that I am excited to be a part of. While other System Integrators come in, implement the application and then get out, Tenzing has a vested interest in making sure the MDM project and data configuration are successful. The full breadth of their offering truly sets Tenzing apart from other technology service providers." Continue reading.

SCMR Partners with Foundation to Promote March as Amyloidosis Awareness Month

The Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR), a Society dedicated to improving cardiovascular health by advancing the field of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR), is recognizing Amyloidosis Awareness Month, an awareness campaign designed specifically to bring attention to amyloidosis- a term that represents several different types of diseases where an abnormal protein called amyloid is produced. These amyloid protein fibers can attach and deposit into organs such as the heart, tissues, nerves and other places in the body, leading to amyloidosis and hindering the normal function of the specific area. Read related news now.

"Amyloidosis is not a disease that is commonly known and can lead to heart failure if gone undetected and untreated," said SCMR member and Committee Chair Dr. Kanae Mukai, ABIHM, FACC, FSCMR. "CMR -or heart MRI- is an excellent way to noninvasively diagnose cardiac amyloidosis. Heart MRI can help differentiate cardiac amyloidosis from other potential causes of a cardiomyopathy. Through the use of heart MRI, the imaging provides a method to assess structure, function and deposition of amyloid in the extracellular tissues. Cardiac magnetic resonance also provides prognostic information for patients with a confirmed diagnosis. A major challenge is the current lack of early diagnosis for a patient with amyloidosis. Awareness of all the amyloidosis diseases by the medical community and by the general public is essential in order to turn this around." Click here.

Jason Conway was diagnosed by cardiologist and SCMR member Dr. Michael Wheat, FACC after having cardiac issues in January 2015. Conway was initially diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and after further investigation, Dr. Wheat ordered a heart MRI that indicated Jason had amyloidosis. Conway credits the knowledge and expertise of Dr. Wheat coupled with his ordering of the heart MRI with "treating my disease, rather than just treating my symptoms."

Amyloidosis has been labeled as a rare disease by the US Office of Rare Diseases (ORD), which is a segment of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). As a classified rare disease by the US government, it is estimated that all of the types of amyloidosis combined affects less than 200,000 people in the US population. As research continues, this rare classification may change. Many experts suspect that some of the amyloidosis diseases are not that rare — just rarely diagnosed. As funding increases for research, the understanding of the amyloid diseases will lead the medical community toward diagnosing and treating amyloidosis. Read all the latest news.

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR), or heart MRI, is an innovative, noninvasive, radiation free method of viewing the heart, heart valves, arteries and veins of the body. Heart MRI uses powerful magnets and advanced computers to obtain both movies and still pictures of the cardiovascular system. These images are highly detailed, promoting accuracy, diagnostic and prognostic power and overall safety, often taking the place of other methods that medical providers use to view the heart. Medical providers use a heart MRI to answer questions about diseases that involve the heart or surrounding vascular system, utilizing the capabilities of a heart MRI to assess virtual heart biopsies, high-resolution perfusion and advanced blood flow analysis. An MRI of the heart can be done with newborns to adults after being evaluated by a physician or licensed heart specialist.

SCMR is happy to be partnering with the Amyloidosis Foundation, a Foundation dedicated to raising awareness and funding for research specifically for amyloidosis. The Amyloidosis Foundation began with the vision of two patients, Don Brockman and Dennis Krysmalski. Don's desire to support research and Dennis's commitment to support patients and increase awareness has been the driving force behind the foundation for the past 15 years. Don's widow, Mary O'Donnell, has led the foundation to become the success it is today.

For more information on the use of heart MRIs, including patient resources, and background on the benefits and importance of cardiac MRI, visit scmr.org.

About the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR)
The Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR) is the recognized representative and advocate for physicians, scientists and technologists who work in the field of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). SCMR is the principal international, independent organization committed to the further development of CMR through education, quality control, research, and training.

Membership has grown to over 2,600 - which includes cardiologists, radiologists, technologists, scientists, engineers and administrators from around the world.
