Farmers Receive 11 Cents of the Thanksgiving Food Dollar, NFU Farmer’s Share Shows

Farmers and ranchers take home just 11.3 cents from every dollar that consumers spend on their Thanksgiving dinner meals, according to the annual Thanksgiving edition of the National Farmers Union (NFU) Farmer's Share publication. The popular Thanksgiving Farmer's Share compares the retail food price of traditional holiday dinner items to the amount the farmer receives for each item they grow or raise.

"As we gather around the Thanksgiving dinner table this year, we should take time to recognize and thank the family farmers and ranchers who provide our Thanksgiving meals," said NFU President Roger Johnson. "While consumer holiday food costs continue to decline, incomes for American farm and ranch families are dropping precipitously. We're in the midst of the worst farm economic downturn in generations, and we're hopeful the Farmer's Share can help illustrate that fact to the general public."

On average, farmers receive 14.8 cents of every food dollar consumers spend throughout the year, while more than 85 percent of food costs cover marketing, processing, wholesaling, distribution and retailing. As the Thanksgiving Farmer's Share illustrates, the farmer's share is even lower for Thanksgiving food items.

Wheat farmers averaged a meager $0.04 on 12 dinner rolls that retail for $2.29. Dairy producers received only $1.44 from a $4.59 gallon of milk. And turkey growers, who raise the staple Thanksgiving dish, received just $0.06 per pound retailing at $1.29. Johnson says that $0.06 figure—while striking on its own—is particularly egregious when considering the fact that poultry integrators received http://usda.mannlib.cornell.edu/usda/current/AgriPric/AgriPric-10-30-2018.pdf $0.53 per pound.

"The major integrators who control the poultry markets have used their extreme bargaining power to suppress the earnings of the men and women who raise our chickens and turkeys while simultaneously taking in record profits for themselves," Johnson said. "While poultry growers take all the risk of production, they are receiving just 5 to 6 cents per pound for turkeys and chickens. The integrators take those same turkeys and chickens, process them, and then mark up the retail value nearly tenfold."

Thanksgiving presents an opportunity to raise awareness about food production, including misconceptions about food costs, Johnson explained. "Farmers and ranchers play the most valuable role in actually producing the food that is served at holiday dinners, yet they make just pennies on the dollar for their products. The farmer's share of the retail food dollar continues its gradual decline from year-to-year as food companies take in record profits and family farmers sell their farms. This is certainly not what the consumer wants, but it is what is happening behind the scenes of their Thanksgiving holiday."

Johnson urged consumers to take notice of what is happening in the food system and supporting policies that benefit family farmers and ranchers. Those interested can learn more at NFU.org, and keep in touch with Farmers Union by signing up for NFU communications here https://nfu.org/connect/.

The Farmers' Share is based on calculations derived from the monthly Agriculture Prices report produced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service, and compared to price points of common grocery food items at Safeway supermarket. The farmer's share of retail turkey sales is reported by the Contract Poultry Growers Association of the Virginias, as national data on farm prices for turkey does not reflect the amount turkey growers receive.

Bay Area Woman Launches Phixst, a One of a Kind Mobile Photo Editing Service Perfectly Suited for the Selfie Generation, but One That Won't Create Unrealistic Body Images

Phixst, a mobile (iOS) app that provides real time photo editing services in a fast, affordable and personalized way is now available in Apple's App Store. It is the first woman-owned service of its kind focused on bringing honesty and social responsibility back to photo editing.

Phixst is not on a mission to help create model-like faces or bodies but rather, providing a practical solution. Founder Vani Kumar is adamant about that. Kumar says, "Having dealt with and overcome a personal battle with body image issues (and losing 50 lbs.), I built a platform intentionally around preventing the ability to request unnatural face/body enhancements."

Everyone, at some point, has experienced taking a bad picture. Pictures on the web are so influential today that managers may make a hiring decision based on what we post. Phixst has found a niche for quick edits ensuring everyone can always put their best photo forward. Examples include: gray hair coverage, removing under eye bags, masking untimely blemishes, or even editing out pesky photo bombers. While some people have the skill to fix their own photos, many people don't have that DIY desire or the time to even try. For them, Phixst is the ideal solution. "There are over 2000 photo editing apps in the market; the learning curve has become very steep. We save our customers time and money by having already done the homework. I'm a stickler for using only the best tools," says Kumar.

Phixst has magic-makers called Phixsters, who will fix selfies or any photo—most within one hour. There is no monthly fee. Users simply download the app and pay a flat fee for each photo they submit.

The Phixsters do this as a side-gig. They must past a skills test before Phixst allows them to touch any photos. Phixster Kiera Palmer says, "As an avid traveler, I got pretty good editing my photos. Being able to help others by editing their photos through Phixst, I'm having fun and doing a good deed. The bonus is making money!" Read all the latest news.

Phixst has received photo editing requests for everything from pets, families, babies, social media posts, dating profiles to small business owners.

Jason Katzenback, Co-Founder and CEO of Amazing.com, Encourages All to Give Thanks for Good Health this Thanksgiving and to Help Those Who Don’t Have It

Jason Katzenback, Co-Founder and CEO of Amazing.com, today revealed things he is grateful for, including the time he had with his daughter who he lost to childhood cancer earlier this year. Katzenback reminded people to be grateful for their good health and urged them to donate to Ewings Sarcoma Research Foundation to help fund research to end childhood cancer. Jason Katzenback explained, "Many families gather around their Thanksgiving table and share the things they are grateful for – Christ, their loved ones, jobs, homes, friends and more. However, many of us take for granted our health. When we're in good health, we don't tend to think about it much, but there are moments in all our lives when we recognize how better off we are when we are healthy. Whether it was a cold and you couldn't breathe out of your nose, a broken hand and you couldn't write, or even a family member suffering an illness, those are the times when we recognize how good we have it when everyone we know is healthy and well."

Jason Katzenback continued, "This holiday season, as we celebrate all that we have to be thankful for, it's important to keep in mind those who are battling the hardest health struggle of all – cancer. Not only should we think of those who are fighting, but those who have lost their lives to cancer. By keeping them in our hearts and mind, we keep their spirits alive. During my family's Thanksgiving celebration this year, we'll think about our daughter and the 16,000 children under the age of 21 who are diagnosed with cancer each year. When our daughter battled childhood cancer, we learned that the life altering disease affects not only our children, but the families that support them."

Remembering his experience Katzenback shared, "While some of us gather in our homes to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, others will gather around hospital beds as they or their family members await treatment. As I think about that, I am thankful for many different things. I am thankful for the doctors and nurses who work tirelessly all year, but especially during the holidays. I am thankful for the family members and friends by my side who helped my family as my daughter battled cancer. Although, my daughter lost her battle to cancer, I am grateful for the time I had with her and am thankful I will meet her again in Heaven. I'm also thankful that we have the opportunity to give back to others going through the hard fight against cancer. My wife and I have committed ourselves to being proactive in making more people aware of the high number of children facing cancer each year and supporting others in whatever way we can. As my wife and I went through our daughter's treatments, we saw so many families struggling emotionally and financially. It again made us so thankful for the stability we had in our lives during such a difficult time. That aided in our desire to help other children facing cancer and their families."

In conclusion, Katzenback stated, "This is the first Thanksgiving we will not be able to hold our daughter. For that I am so incredibly NOT thankful. Cancer sucks. I am however, thankful for Thanksgivings we did have with her. I am also thankful for the passion our experience sparked in us. We've gained so much empathy and feelings towards others experiencing what we experienced. We're able to relate to what they've gone through, to feel what they've gone through. That is why we've become so passionate about helping people. The devastation we've seen first-hand makes us want to help everyone. Our passion has allowed us to raise funds and bring awareness to many children who need help as well as raise money for research to help find a cure for childhood cancer. The day we cure this devastating disease I will be forever thankful."

This Thanksgiving, the Katzenbacks have asked for support in raising funds to fight childhood cancer in honor of the children who have lost their lives. The family has asked that those who are compelled to help, donate to the Ewings Sarcoma Research Foundation or use their Facebook page to create a fundraiser to show others how they can help.
