Playonwords.com Presents Their Fall 2018 PAL Awards - Best Toys, Games and Media that Spark Language Development Through Play

Play On Words LLC, led by highly respected speech language pathologist Sherry Artemenko, announces 2018's Fall PAL Award Winners, the toy industry's only recognition directed by a credentialed speech-language expert recognizing the language learning edge in exceptional toys, games and media. Sherry's 35 years of child development experience with over 17,000 hours working with kids empower her PAL selections, video reviews, popular blog, media appearances (NBC Connecticut, FOX News Milwaukee), and consulting practice.

While it's been said that "play is the work of children," it's now being seen ever more critically as the scaffolding supporting child development. A recent American Academy of Pediatrics policy statement (See NY Times, 8/20/18 "Let Kids Play") suggests that doctors should encourage playful learning for parents and infants by writing a "prescription for play" at every well-child visit in the first two years of life. Dr. Benard Dreyer, the director of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at NYU's Medical School and a past AAP president said, "Play is the most important part of childhood ... It's how they develop emotionally, cognitively and in language — It's important to understand how all of us, and especially parents, can encourage play."

Playonwords.com helps toy brands and consumers alike see the strategic value of language learning in play through helping to build vocabulary, foster cooperation, express emotion, kindle creativity and expand descriptive and problem solving capacities. The PAL Award on the internet, packaging and in print media differentiates brands who know the marketplace now demands products that are not only fun, but also infused with learning potential. The gold seal with three smiley faces tells customers that more than great entertainment is to be found behind the box, book cover or app license. Here's what's great in Fall One-Eight!

EARLY DEVELOPMENT: Sherry's experience in pediatric speech therapy has given her an eye for the best products to build attention, vocabulary and concepts through play, preparing children for their first sounds, words and sentences. While touching and exploring a sensory turtle, racing down ramps over obstacles to capture the bad guy to put him in jail, or hooking cute collapsable fish to match colors, kids learn essential early language skills.

READING AND WRITING: Practicing writing and drawing on a magical light board, building words with changeable magnetic letter blocks, writing messages on an easel or manipulating bendable rods to form letters, all help children pick up essential skills to advance reading and writing.

LANGUAGE STRUCTURE, CRITICAL THINKING AND REASONING: These outstanding products can build language structure, critical thinking and reasoning, often teaching vocabulary, concepts or grammar while delivering fun. Be a mini entrepreneur learning the nuances of assets, payouts, and industry bonuses using zillions of play dollars, pair silly, edgy tween answers to fun and funny answers, experiment with erupting volcanos, glow worms, and sticky slime, recording your findings to strengthen communication skills.

STORY-TELLING / PRETEND PLAY: Whether sounding the fire alarm and sending a man down the pole to his truck, donning your armor, shield and sword to enter the castle, or opening your backpack of dinosaurs in a prehistoric setting, children enter the world of pretend, creating their own stories with plenty of flexible props to guide their imagination. Oral story-telling precedes writing as kids learn the steps to create a good narrative.

SOCIAL LANGUAGE: Complementary to pretend play, social language blossoms when children play with toys and games and interact with media that encourage extended social interactions. Playing cooperatively to send a message through a nine foot tube, putting on a play with silly characters that change expressions, or using your reindeer pal to spread the message that different is okay and unique is special can equip kids to better name, understand and manage their emotions, leading to stronger EQ's.

Playonwords.com was founded by well-respected speech-language pathologist, Sherry Artemenko. Her 35 years championing language rich play, esteemed PAL Award, popular blog, and insightful tips to parents set her apart as the leading advocate for the language component in toys.

Over 17,000 hours working directly with children has shown her that a unique set of the best toys, games and books have the capability to develop language while delivering great play. Studies show:

Sherry established the PAL Award to identify unique toys, games and media that through their design, quality and character, encourage play that advances language. PAL winners in the hands of kids, spark fun and creative play with lots of talk. Such toys, recognized on the basis of her child development expertise, are complemented by practical coaching in her blog, showing parents and caregivers how to get the most from toys, games and media to build language and underlying cognitive skills.

Global pet insurance market set to double in five years

As news hits that the annual growth rate of the global pet insurance market will reach 14.4 per cent over the next five years, from $3200 million in 2017 to $7170 million in 2023, technology specialist Aquarium Software says technology will be a key driver and could even help drive this growth further. This news comes hot on the heels of an announcement showing that the number of pet payouts is at record levels, with the UK industry paying out £2 million a day (ABI). The figures suggest the security of insuring your pet is proving its worth for those with insurance, yet more must be done to persuade the non-insured that the figures do not lie.

The US market in particular presents great opportunities for insurers and technologists alike. The US has a little over two per cent penetration of pet insurance, with just 2,000,000 pets insured and an estimated 98,000,000 uninsured pets needing cover. This data combined with research upon research about the immensely strong emotional bond between pet and pet parent, suggests a rosy future for the pet insurance market, according to Aquarium.

"Multiple independent data sources are telling us there is a great opportunity in pet insurance, especially in the States," said Aquarium Software Director, Mark Colonnese. "Technology in the pet insurance world is bringing faster claims, improving the customer journey and cutting opportunities for fraud, all of which leads to more reason for diligent pet owners to insure their beloved pets to cover against something unexpected going wrong," added Mark. "We can provide the technology platforms and apps, but the wider challenge for the industry remains the refusal of some consumers to see pet insurance as an investment rather than a cost - despite ever rising vet fees and the obvious benefits of insuring. News that the pet insurance market is growing is fantastic; as an industry we can still do more to educate consumers and help drive down premiums using technology innovation. Then we may be able to look forward to an even more prosperous future for the pet insurance market beyond that suggested by this latest data," concluded Mark.

Aquarium Software is used by a number of travel insurers; pet insurers; and other consumer service providers and affinity partners in the UK, Europe, USA and Canada. For further information contact Aquarium Software on +44 (0)161 927 5620 or visit http://www.aquarium-software.com

First Annual “Oneday Against Hate” Sparks Widespread Conversations of Understanding Online and in Workplaces, Schools, Houses of Worship Across the U.S.

Last Monday, October 1, Oneday Against Hate, a national movement combating hate by encouraging conversations of understanding, launched on social media and in hundreds of schools, workplaces, and houses of worship across the country. Inspiring dialogue among hundreds of Americans, the growing movement will take place annually on the first Monday of October.

In honor of Oneday, diverse people of all ages took part in conversations to build understanding and forge deeper human connections. Notable events included peer conversations and activities in schools such as Marshall Elementary School in Manassas, VA, Jupiter High School in Jupiter, FL, Leander Middle School in Leander, TX, and Lusher Middle School in New Orleans, LA; Pac-12 college athletes creating PSAs about the importance of inclusivity; and intraoffice dialogues shared on social media by employees of large corporations such as PwC.

"The only path toward defeating hate is for all of us—people from every background and identity —to stand against injustice and inequality," said Human Rights Campaign (HRC) National Press Secretary Sarah McBride. "We were honored to join in the Oneday Against Hate campaign and will continue to work across communities and movements to fight for equality today, tomorrow and every day."

In its inaugural year, the Oneday Against Hate alliance was comprised of more than 20 high profile corporations, media outlets, nonprofits, and youth movements including NAACP (The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), The Coca-Cola Company, Univision Communications Inc. (UCI), PwC, HRC, UnidosUS, ADL (the Anti-Defamation League), 92nd Street Y (92Y), the Consulate General of Colombia to New York, Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Religions for Peace, The African Middle Eastern Leadership Project (AMEL), Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi), the non-denominational Jewish youth group BBYO, the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA), Pac-12 (Pacific Coast Conference), and fraternity Zeta Beta Tau (ZBT).

"We were excited to be a part of this grassroots coalition bringing people together for tolerance-building dialogue because when voices are heard, communities are connected, and ideas are nurtured from the ground up, movements like Oneday Against Hate, can grow and real change can begin," said Asha Curran, Chief Innovation Officer and Director of the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at 92Y.

Other Oneday Against Hate activations included employees at dozens of Mexican Consulates
across the country taking part in inclusive dialogues; Colorado diversity leaders coming together to speak about the meaning of hate; educator trainings hosted by the NCEA; conversations between students in dorm rooms at the University of Connecticut; and impactful dialogues live streamed across the web, including one between high profile survivors of hate crimes Susan Bro, Charlottesville victim Heather Heyer's mother, Jane Clementi, mother of cyber-bullying victim Tyler Clementi, and Las Vegas Police Department Deputy Chief Christopher Darcy.

"Oneday Against Hate was a strong start, but the fight to end bias in this country is just beginning," said Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO and National Director of ADL. "We encourage everyone to continue holding these important and sometimes difficult conversations in order to create a more just, inclusive, and open-minded world."

To learn more about the discussions started on October 1, follow the hashtag #WeAreOneday on Facebook and Twitter, and visit weareoneday.org to pledge to join the movement in the future.
