Study.com Unveils Partnership with California Libraries

Study.com, a leading online education platform, today announced a Working Scholars partnership with CA Libraries to help California's public library employees and graduates of library-based high school degree programs obtain a bachelor's degree for little- to no-cost. With support from a Library Services and Technology Act grant, the program will be available to California public library employees statewide, as well as to library patrons who graduated from the Career Online High School program at three pilot libraries. Career Online High School is a program that enables community members to obtain a GED while gathering the skills needed to enter the workforce. The Working Scholars project was supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.

This two-part Working Scholars program is initially kicking off for the state's public library employees and COHS graduates from some of California's biggest cities including San Jose, San Diego and Sacramento. California's public libraries encompass more than 1,100 public library locations, with more than 145 million annual visits from residents across the state. The massive network of libraries is operated by 17,000 staff and 1,600 volunteers who help libraries serve their communities with free resources, services, and programs. With the sheer amount of reach, the Working Scholars program gives library staff the opportunity to lead youth by example as staff members pursue their bachelor's degree.

"The Working Scholars program offers new routes for empowerment and personal success," said Greg Lucas, California State Librarian. "It opens an opportunity where traditional paths might be closed."

Working Scholars was launched by Study.com at the end of 2016 to help adult workers improve their skills, enhance career mobility, and earn a college degree. To help meet the needs of adult students, Study.com developed a completely online and mobile-first curriculum, containing over 225 college credit grant courses that are accepted at over 2,000 colleges throughout the United States.

"The work done by the California State Library greatly impacts the state of California with the incredible information and services they provide to the community. With a college degree, these groups of students can create career mobility for themselves and have a potential to earn 50 percent more lifetime earnings from this program," said Chris Mancini, Chief Growth Officer at Study.com.
