Toys‟R”Us Liquidation and Early Easter Align, Bringing Additional Sales to Growing U.S. Toy Industry, Reports The NPD Group

In the first 10 weeks of 2018, when the toy industry was in a "business as usual" state, U.S. dollar sales grew by 2 percent – on par with the results during this time last year, according to global information company The NPD Group. The proceeding four weeks brought two unique circumstances which converged to further lift the industry: the beginning of the toys‟R"Us liquidation (March 15) and an early Easter (April 1). In those weeks, from March 11 through April 7, toy sales grew by 36 percent over the same period in 2017 – driving year-to-date growth for the 14 weeks combined to 13 percent.

Regardless of when it falls on the calendar, Easter sales volume typically experiences a bump in the two weeks leading up to the holiday, providing an annual boost for the industry. Norm alizing the year-to-date sales trend to split out Easter and decipher the impact of the Toys‟R"Us announcement, results in around $180 million more being generated between March 11 and April 7, 2018. This represents additional toy industry sales that may be attributed to the Toys‟R"Us liquidation.

Among U.S. consumers who purchased a toy, game, or arts/crafts product from Toys‟R"Us or Babies‟R"Us for someone in the last month, the majority (56 percent) did so to give to someone immediately, according to a poll conducted by next generation polling and data mining company CivicScience, on behalf of NPD. Of those remaining, 12 percent made purchases to give by June; 10 percent between July and September; and 22 percent did so to give in October or later.

"The Toys‟R"Us bankruptcy has brought an incremental sales opportunity to the toy industry, and with at least a month to go until i t wraps up, there is still more to come," said Juli Lennett, senior vice president and toys industry advisor, The NPD Group. "Shopping behavior since the announcement indicates that consumers are not pantry loading on Christmas gifts. I estimate that, of the 22 percent planning to give in October or later, about half of that is for birthdays or other occasions and the remaining for Christmas, resulting in a net impact on future Christmas sales of less than 1 percent."

In the opening 10 weeks of 2018 as well as the four weeks surrounding Easter and the Toys‟R"Us news, among the fastest-growing supercategories during both periods were Youth E lectronics, led by Fingerlings; Dolls, driven by L.O.L. Surprise!; and All Other Toys, on account of sales increases for Soft N Slo Squishies, Smooshy Mushy, and Squish-Dee-Lish. In the latter weeks leading up to Easter, Plush sales moved into these ranks as traditional plush typically sells well for this holiday.

Many items that moved into the top 20 best-sellers for the latter four weeks were spring and Easter friendly, including Bunch O Balloons 3pk, Glove A Bubble Assortment, and Hatchimals Mini Eggs CollEGGtibles 12 pack.

"Given the timing of both these events, I believe it's likely that some consumers took advantage of the Toys‟R"Us deals by purchasing Easter gifts at the retailer," said Lennett. "Looking ahead towards the holiday season, from what the data shows and what consumers are saying so far, fourth quarter sales should be only slightly impacted by the liquidation."

Alleged Victim of Sexual Abuse at Beaumont High School Files Lawsuit Against District

A high school student who is an alleged victim of sexual abuse by an English teacher in Beaumont, California has filed a lawsuit again st the Beaumont Unified School District. The student is named as "John Doe" in the lawsuit in order to protect his identity as a victim of childhood sexual abuse. The teacher, Samantha Lee Ciotta, is facing criminal charges related to her alleged sexual abuse of John Doe, which first came to light in September 2017.

The lawsuit alleges that Ms. Ciotta showered the student with attention and gifts, but then gave him alcohol and exploited him sexually. John Doe seeks to hold the school district liable, based on the allegation that school administrators were aware of numerous red flags showing that the relationship between Ms. Ciotta and our client was crossing acceptable boundaries. For example, the complaint alleges that John Doe was routinely excused from attending other classes and would spend most or all of the school day in Ms. Ciotta's classroom, that Ms. Ciotta walked the boy to his other classes and drove him to and from school and that Ms. Ciotta appeared, uninvited, as John Doe's "advocate" at Individualized Education Program ("IEP") meetings. The complaint further alleges that the boy's guardian and at least one other teacher reported concerns to school administrators, but that nothing was done.

Cobo Wallet Announces Pre-Series A funding from Linear Venture, FreeS Fund and IMO Ventures

Cobo Wallet, a managed wallet product, announced their pre-Series A funding round from reputable early-stage Chinese venture capital firms, Linear Venture, FreeS Fund and IMO Ventures.

Launched late February in China this year, Cobo has already acquired close to 100,000 users. The mobile software wallet app already supports over 20 cryptocurrencies such as BTC, BCH, ETH, LTC, ZEC, DASH and more, with other localized features such as sending cryptocurrency "red packets" to friends – a cultural symbol of gift-giving during special occasions where the Chinese give money in a red envelope.

"Cobo's mission is to make it easier for everyone to own and use cryptocurrencies," said Shixing "Shenyu" Mao, co-founder of Cobo, stating that, "While there are many wallets out there, none has focused exclusively on the difficulties that new cryptocur rency adopters face when they first decide to invest in cryptocurrency."

Accordingly, the key differentiating factors for Cobo wallet are user experience and security. With an unrelenting focus on ease of use and relatable features, Cobo allows users to easily send and receive, store and manage multiple cryptocurrency. Beyond that, users are now able to participate and interact with new Proof-of-Stake tokens directly in the app, such as joining a staking pool and taking advantage of smart voting features for Delegated Proof-of-Stake tokens.

This foray into Proof-of-Stake capabilities is an extension of the experience that Shenyu has amassed in the cryptocurrency space since he stumbled into it in 2011. He is also the founder of f2pool, which was the world's largest cryptocurrency Proof-of-Work mining pool in 2013, and which currently ranks as the top 5 in Bitcoin mining, top 2 in Ethereum, Litecoin and ZCash.

Cobo is a managed wallet, meaning that it he lps users to manage their public and private keys. In this way, users will not run the risk of losing their cryptocurrency if they lose their phone or forget their seed phrases, a current standard in most wallets today. As an example, if users forget their internet banking user name or password today, the bank can retrieve it for them; similarly, with Cobo, users simply need to register an account, and take steps to protect your phone, payment password and enable two-factor authentication. This particular set-up empowers non-technical users to get started in cryptocurrency with a simple and familiar set of interactions.

The core difference in the security technology for Cobo is the way that users' cryptocurrencies are handled. The wallet uses HSM encryption, a standard widely used by commercial banking, trading, and credit card systems, and a multi-signature cold wallet. With Cobo, there is a physical isolation of the cryptocurrency entrusted to Cobo by users, where these cryptocurrencies are placed in cold storage until the user requests for their cryptocurrencies to be back online again to be used. Sophisticated algorithms can determine if such a request is fraudulent or valid, while the structure of the system accounts for various network risks.

Helming the charge on technology is Changhao Jiang, who was previously the co-founder of the first cryptocurrency wallet company in China, Bihang.com, which was acquired by OKCoin (now known as OKex). He was an early senior research scientist at Facebook, as one of the earliest Chinese engineers there, where he worked on the BigPipe protocol that drastically improved Facebook site speed by at least twice. The company is headquartered in Beijing, with offices in Shanghai and Seattle.

Wang Huai, a founding partner of Linear Venture and lead investor in Cobo, shared, "Building a great cryptocurrency wallet product is definitely not an easy path, but I firmly believe that the market is ready for a company such as Cobo to scale." He values the market for digital asset wallet services and products at over $15B.

Shenyu adds, "The industry for cryptocurrency wallets, and cryptocurrency and blockchain in general, is still very nascent. While other wallets view it only as an entry point to various blockchain ecosystem services, we believe in continuing to build the best possible asset management product for our users."

As such, Cobo's future plans include comprehensive asset management and cryptocurrency use. With the explosion of decentralized applications and cryptocurrencies with proof-of-stake variant mechanisms, Cobo is now well-positioned to provide products across the spectrum to a burgeoning cryptocurrency market, especially with this new funding round.

In honor of National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day (NADPD), Hill's Pet Nutrition is joining its nation-wide network of animal shelter partners in a campaign to educate pet families on the ways they can stay safe and be better prepared to survive a disaster. This year's National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day (NADPD) will be held on May 12, 2018, and will help raise awareness of the significant risk pets face during natural disasters.

Hill's also recommends the following Tips to Help Ensure Your Pet's Safety in an Emergency:
1.    Ensure your pet's identification by using a microchip or collar ID tag, and make sure that all contact information is up-to-date. You can update the microchip's contact information at the manufacturer's website by locating the code from the barcode sticker or the confirmation form provided by your veterinarian or animal shelter.
2.    Display a pet rescue decal on the front door or window to let first responders know there is a pet in the house. Include the local veterinarian's contact information.
3.    Learn where your pet s like to hide in the house when frightened. Finding a pet quickly will help to evacuate faster.
4.    Identify a location to take a pet in case of evacuation. Keep in mind that disaster shelters for people may not be open to pets. Scout hotels and motels with pet-friendly policies and ask relatives or friends if they could house you and your pet.
5.    Carry a picture of the pet in the event of separation.
6.    In case of evacuation, consider taking a pet carrier or crate for transport and safe-keeping.

When even the best laid plans are not enough and communities are hit hard by disaster, Hill's Disaster Relief Network responds quickly to supply free pet food to families in need.
